Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Sooo, just diggin in from the side, I am new to playin "lo fi doom/stoner/70s Hardrock" and my "Speedrock Setup" (ampeg svt II preamp, power amp, 2x15 ported) is just tooo "rocky" for my taste. I wand something more... vintage sounding. Anybody tried a peavey century for this type of Music?

the Drummer is a quiet one so no Need for a Kilowatt of power.

thinkin about a sealed 2x15 too.

Basses: P with dr loriders or a jack casady

I'd think an SVT would be be fine?

Peavey century is pretty low wattage, I think it might get pretty dirty (rocky?) real fast compared to just changing your SVT settings

SVT or V4 probably the most affordable as far as tube amps go. Depending on budget and vintage 50-100 watt orange/matamp would fit perfectly.

Speaking (loosely) of black P basses. I sent what I thought was a low-ish offer for this guy on ebay, and seller went ahead and accepted. So, inbound.

Sounds like you just need a fuzz ppeda or 2 or 5 and youll be good. Otherwise, even with a quiet drummer id try to find a bass/musician 400 if you wanna go SS Peavey. Or maybe pick up an older less powerful monoblock slave instead of the 1000watter. Really a svt2 pre should get you vintage svt all day eq'd correctly. Its all about the low mids (100hz) and smooth rolled off treble.

Oh and the bRIFFday twas heavy as planned. BIG bottle of bourbon stout, big nugs, and big riffs.

Also new PVY day...6 input mk2 Musician 400 with matching 412f. Frummer said a neighbor lady gave it to him because she knew he was a musician, im buying off him for 2 months rent, $100. Its scratchy and one of the 12s is flopping around and there something rolling around inside but she makes some gnar sounds as is. Planning on put some emi wizards in the 412 eventually to use with the 3120 for my highs rig.

Thanks for the input, i have a ehx nano bass muff. Maybe just try 100hz and rolling off treble. But with that My fuzz loses its "magic" somehow

Not saying the nano bass muff is trash, but when it comes to fuzz with "magic" thats like pulling a quarter from behind a kindergarteners ear...id highly recommend getting a better muff, like something with a mids knob. The Hail Satan Muff from Abombinable Electronics is way fairly priced and gnarly as hell.

Also when setting up your preamp up for more vintage tones, id bypass the graphic eq, dont use the ultra hi or lo, set the mid selector for the lowest or second lowest position, treble a little rolled off, boost the mids and bass a bit, and run the gain at like 75%...forget about that clipping light ampeg puts on those amps, it should be lit up most of the time, thats how you know you have enough gain.

V-Dub, I'm not as qualified to answer this as some of the other guys on the board who have nailed their tone. I still struggle in the practice room and in the mix, and am still tweaking things week to week. That being said, I've tried tons of experiments and a few things come to mind that have had concrete positive impact.

- On the SVT in the room I rolled off the bass [1] (try notching at 60-80 if you have the eq)
- Used basses/pickups with more vintage pickups - thinner sounding (using the Ric right now, sometimes pulling the vintage-knob)
- Went one gauge thinner on strings (120 -> 115), and bought a drop-tune set instead of using the bottom four of a five set. (115 Dunlop heavy core)
- Un-scooping the mids to get audible high-end without going into "thwack/clank" territory
- Finding the right dirt pedals
- Bought an OrangeAD200B (wow, clean tone sounds great)

Footnotes:
[1] this helped the practice-room sound be less boomy, but I run a clean DI tone to the mixer to make sure I have some bass in the recording. I imagine live I would bring some bass back.

History:

I started with an old tube SVT into an old (plywood) ampeg 8x10. It worked fine in regular tuning, but wasn't quite right when we tuned down to C. My guitar player runs a muddy tone (he's evolving though, moving away from bedroom solo tone to a more trebley fuzz tone that sits in the mix better), and my drummer wants his bass drum loud and low - he uses a full-stack SS ampeg rig for his kick monitor, cranked pretty loud. End result was the practice room was literally booming in bass mud with all three of us going, and all of us having trouble hearing ourselves at times.

Yeah, VDUB I'd stick with your pre/power setup unless you really want to go all-tube. I use an SVT 2 PRO - so same preamp as your rig, but with the 300W tube power section. Gain stays at about 3:00 or higher, OD knob is dimed, mid-selector is on the 2nd to the left position, bass knob and mids knob are just short of being dimed, treble knob rolled back to about 9:00. No Ultra Lo or Ultra Hi. Cab is an SWR Goliath 610.

I use an active ATK205, boost mids and bass a tiny bit, cut treble off nearly completely.

That gives me a solid, bass-heavy "clean" tone which is a bit overdriven but still clear and fat. Heavy parts are augmented with a Fuzz, Distortion or OD. Specifically I'm using the Palmer Bazz for fuzz, MXR M85 for distortion and EHX Crayon for OD. I used the original bass big muff for a while there's some decent sounds in there, but it is kind of lackluster compared to other fuzzes.

I'm up against two 100W tube halfstacks, we're all tuned to B standard. No problems being heard or having too muddy of a mix (which is kind of a miracle considering all of the low end and distortion).

If you want a more vintage tone I'd look into flatwound strings and/or start plucking way up over the neck. The further from the bridge you pluck, the more Geezer you will get.

Good luck!

Just change your preamp settings? Turn up the gain and drive?

Also, why sealed?

Agreed.

The clip light, expecially on the Ampeg amps with tube pres, is safe to ignore. I dime the gain on Ampegs pretty much whenever I play one.

As for the fuzz, if you're going to use it, I'd second the recommendation for a muff with a mids control. The Swollen Pickle works well with the mids turned up all the way.
