what exactly are the cons to buying a 3rd classic 400?
Why not? Ive seriously debated a third fender 300 pro! (It was a hard to ignore price)
It's not a bad price, and I will have to see what shipping will cost. I am trying to buy a house though...

Sell me the cl400 in the most beat up shape. Save money, buy a house, Mike doesn't need a big tube head anymore and peavey glory all around. A buncha wins in that list.
But really, the more of them he gets, the larger chance of him selling one to me...so buy buy buy.
So, watching NAMM coverage, the new Sound Citys will be shipping in August. They're based of the early One Hundred/Arbiter Power One Hundred, used by Hendrix and The Who, which is more of an AP design like the Hiwatts. Sadly, think they're gonna be pricey. But I would so be into using one...they look so cool...

From what I've heard of Sound City heads, they used at various times at least two very different preamp sections.

From what I've heard of Sound City heads, they used at various times at least two very different preamp sections.
There doesn't seem to be much info out yet from what I can find, but from what I've gathered, they are based on the earliest Sound City One Hundred.
Such as these:
You can also see these amps behind Entwistle on the Rock and Roll Circus footage, as well as in other photos from 1967ish. Now, at the time they were essentially AP, and were what the CP103 Hiwatt front end was based on AFAIK. In the video on the new ones, Fryette said the new ones are built to be loud and clean, not distortion heavy and they feature Heyboer replica transformers of the old Partridges. So the pre-amp on these are NOT the active preamps of the later Sound City models, these are just passive. Now, the new ones could definitely have been tweaked to be more guitar-centric, as they aren't straight up replicas of the old ones (different control scheme). Here's the video:

What does AP mean?
All Purpose. Means they weren't specifically geared for any instrument in particular.
Ah, okay.
Not sure which era of Sound City amps has which kind of preamp.
