Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

The later models had active preamps, and Fryette Amps are making the current production versions.

What I'm always a little bemused by is in the current market where all these old brands are being resurrected like Supro, Park, Sound City, etc to replicate their classic desings, companies that haven't gone under and have continued to the present, such as Laney still haven't reissued like the Supergroup and Klipp. Seriously, people love the old Sabbath tone, how come Laney hasn't jumped on the reissue train?

I guess they don't feel they need to? Iommi has a current signature amp, after all. A reissue early 70s amp would be cool. My favorite Sabbath guitar tone is actually on Live Evil, though.


Also I don't know why Fender hasn't resurrected Sunn again, like, years ago.

I suppose so, but man, I would dig having one of those Supergroups, they look tough.

With Sunn...idk, dunno what to say there. If I recall Fender just hasn't ever really had a clear idea of what to do with the brand and when asked have essentially said they don't really have interest in reviving the brand. If they did I think they'd need to present it as like a custom shop line, keeping the PTP hand wiring of the tube heads, but I'm sure they'd be ludicrously expensive. The Model T is one thing, they can market that to guitarists, but most of the others would only appeal to bass players, and maybe they don't think they'd be able to get any viable market share with the 200s or 2000s and that would also compete with their own Bassman heads. Plus, I really think they work best with the OG cabinet design which most people aren't too stoked on anymore, AND kinda need the JBLs or Altecs that originally came in them. Though Fender has a D130 clone in the '65 Twin Custom so maybe they could get eminence to clone the K140.


As for favorite Sabbath Tone? Gotta go with this, which is also about the most evil sounding 3 minutes ever recorded. That dive Tony does at like 49:30, then Ward's heavy tom work and Geezer's Wah sound. Jesus. I need to know how Geezer got that sound (I'm thinking Supergroup and Tychobrahe Wah), you can hear it come through really well at about 51:50.

Honestly to me that doesn't that different from their Live Evil tones, except a bit thinner, which may just have to do with how they were recorded.

I like both guitar and bass sounds more on here:


And yeah, I guess to me it would kinda make sense for Fender to revive Sunn as a sort of boutique brand to compete with all the various boutique builders currently copying Sunns.

It's true about the cabs not really being in vogue anymore (whereas guitar 4x12s I doubt will ever go out of style). As for the drivers, they could just use Faitals. I mean if they're going to be super boutique pricey things anyway. They could also pair the preamps of some of the old Hartzell era solid state heads with micro power amps.

The Model T they could make in like two different power models like Orange does with the Thunderverb.

Yeah, it really is lots of fun. I've been playing with it the whole afternoon, it will take time to know it, although I've already found a few sweet spots.
It's pretty different from the flangers I had before. Less whooshy (on my settings, it can get pretty whooshy though), more guttural, sounds great with an overdrive. It's also a bit more low-endy (is this even a thing? :D). I suck at describing pedals.

Friday was definitely an amp day. Dropped off 4 amps at the tech, picked up the bastard VTA and then had some of the best sushi Ive ever had, which including the best duck ive ever had. I had a foodgasm every bite l, it melted in my mouth. Then carried the VTA 6 blocks to the black metal show I was meeting the guy i was trading with was playing at. Hes a PVY KVLT regular, so it was cool to meet up with him in person. Stayed for a couple songs then got the we need to go look from ma lady so I carried the much smaller but still quite heavy rockmaster 6 blocks back to the van and thus ended the great amp day of 2016.

Oh that's not gonna fix this one. From the looks of it it was plugged before but they drove it on the rim before they ever got it fixed, cause the inside wall is in really bad shape. Plug seems to have popped out and the wall has cracked as well. 'Course no one on island stocks this tire size, gotta order some.

Anywhere good at veneer/plastic/metal cutting?

I'd like a plate to cover the holes in my bass drum where the unused Tom holder went.

Also if I decide to just ditch the Jazz pickup, Id like a cover for the cavity, be it just a square piece of plastic over it or an actual jazz shaped adapter for a different pickup?

Anyone capable of these things in any way?
