Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

1st world problem - opinions on Peavey Bandit 65 vs. Transtube Bandit (aka Blackbox or Silver Stripe Bandit).

Could get either, but have been looking at the Transtube for a lower volume practice amp mostly because it's a single speaker (even same type of speaker) combo version of my big guitar rig, so it would feasibly be closest to my big rig's tone in a smaller package. I could tweak and apply changes to my big rig (in theory). It's a little pricier, and I don't need that much power for practice, but the similarities would be great, as would the possibility of having a backup if necessary.

Bandit 65 is lower volume, and has a slightly different feature set. I'd have to get a footswitch (or make sure it comes with one) as these would be pedal platforms and this version can only access clean via footswitch. No experience with this one. Footswitch could make this slightly pricier, but this amp is typically cheaper online.

So, any compelling reasons to get one over the other? I know they'll be more alike than different, just nitpicking, really. I will be using pedals for dirt etc., so I'm really looking into cleans more than anything.

And on a related note, anybody know which Bandit the old-school Swedish death metal dudes like Entombed, Dismember, etc., used? HM-2 into Bandit has always been a favorite tone of mine.

I've been using my shame poopy Radio Shack iron for probably 15 years or more, I finally cracked and bought a new tip this year. It's worked, but I haven't really learned how to solder onto pots or surfaces like that very well, yet.

I wish I had one of those little third hand gadgets. I've used my fly tying clamps a few times, but it's alot of precarious balancing going on.

got so angry today at the xl170s on my lb100 that i rubbed my sweaty feet on them until they lost their zing, put up the bacchus jazz and the mini moog delay on consignment at future music in highland park so i can pay my property taxes, and i came home and my neighbors hammer drill is dead, so no rock carving next week :( and he'll probably want it repaired or replaced, ugh

at least i found a new mom and pop feed store to buy salt rocks and bird seed

I often forget about HB. That's a good idea, actually.

I've been holding off a complete rewire job because I just don't feel like I can adequetely solder wires to pots without making a mess of things. I should probably sit down and practice that a bit and get it going, I'm conifdent my old Shack iron will do just fine.

I'm not so sure if it's up for trying to assemble a pedal kit, which is the other hting I'd like to accomplish this winter. One of the GGG Muffs with some sort of OD pedal in front of it, jsut stick it into one box.

The hakko irons are cool, but pricey. I haven't made the leap yet because of that.

From what I've heard the ggg transistor muffs are not true to spec. I've loved every pedal I have built from Aion electronics. Great layouts with a lot of mod capabilities. If I can find the circuit I want from Aion that's the route I go.

In order to attempt to build a pedal, I need a little baggie of sorted bits and pieces and some instructions. I wouldn't know what to do with a bare PCB board nor where to find all the bits and pieces to populate it with.

So how hard is it to actually do? Can a hack pull this off? How about two pedals, one enclosure? I just assumed that it would be wiring one's "output" into the next pedal's "input" instead of to jacks, and twisting the power cords together.

need a three action hammer drill for my new salt rock sculptures, my neighbors cheaper one broke and now we are trying to get the three action one from his buddy, practice might be canceled today, because the guitarist has got to register his kid for some traveling le cross team or something

Opinions on the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe? Looking at getting an octaver for the rig. I have the DOD Octoplus, which is plenty capable, but it seems like the MXR takes all the features in that pedal and improves on them all. What do you guys think? The MXR worth it for analog octave? Don't need anything crazy, I'll be running it into dirt, filter, etc., though if that helps any. Thanks as always.

I try not to skip opening bands unless I've seen them before and know for sure that I don't like them. I've often seen bands I'd never heard of open for bands I went to see and been really impressed.

Also, at the end of December, I'm playing a show with @callofcthulhu

I'd be happy to walk you through some things. I'm no expert but teaching is the best way to reinforce learning. I can do it here via PM as well but I don't check it that often so expect a delayed response.

Mammoth Electronics and Small Bear electronics will have 99% of what you need. Pedal Parts Plus and General Guitar Gadgets are also good.


Two in ones can be done like that. You have to wire the power and ground in parallel though. But a lot of options become apparent. I'm getting ready to build a 2 in 1, Colorsound Overdriver into a Colorsound Tonebender mk3. Haven't decided on one or two footswitches, boost always on or have it on a toggle. I can document it if you want.

Also, unaffiliated product opinion. I REALLY like the circuit offerings from aion electronics. Their rat (Helios) is killer. Craps all over the madbean slow loris. They are pretty simple, all fit inside a 1590b and he includes a lot of mod information and often times extra pads for diode stacking. They are great. My favorite boards so far by a long shot. And he doesn't care if you buy them to produce and sell, so long as you don't goop the circuit.

Assuming the booker doesn't weird out on us. Harassed us several times what the lineup was gonna be and now that we have one suddenly we get radio silence. Should be an epic show if it comes together though.

Fun fact - I've had a hard-on for Ricks for as long as I've been a bass player, but it was seeing @Sartori wailing on one that inspired me to actually get out there and buy one.

I've always been curious about Tbirds, but I just don't think I could live with the neck dive.

The t-bird actually doesn't really dive, since my strap is wide, and the button is right on the back of the neck heel instead of where the upper horn would be. It's fun. I still like my Rickenbackers better, but Corey was selling his T-bird for a reasonable price, and I thought "well, I've always kinda wanted one of these," so I bought it and have been customizing it.

Still saving up money to refinish the 4003S in the middle (it'll be white/"snowglo" eventually). My blue 4001 wouldn't fit in the picture, so I decided to make it just of my BEAD tuned basses.

And yeah, Danika was telling me that that venue is super anal about us not scheduling any shows within two weeks before or after. I understand why, but yeah. Still, I think that was just about the fastest my band agreed to a show since we opened for Solstafir. Are you going to be bringing your rig from OMC? Should we maybe share some gear so we have an easier load in?

So get a used one that has had the cover removed. And get the bezel for it from tubeampology. :p
