Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

eBay good timez.....another bum deal, bought a project bass, and it shows up rattling around in the box. The pickups are dented, the body looks way worse than the guy's photos. The neck truss rod looks super foooked - like a bad previous repair....see below, look at the nut for christsakes. Seller did not disclose that nor was it pictured. Opened a case with eBay, seller comes back with sob story about being a poor student, offers less than 20% partial refund. Seller officially listed it as 'Used' - not as parts/not working. Thus why I opened the case as 'item not as described'.
Do I play hardball and ask for more money refunded, or wait until next week for eBay to officially step in? If I grant mercy to the seller, I then have to flip a pile of parts. It's a rare bass and a new neck is going to take a while to show up. I just wouldn't trust the neck further than I could throw it so I don't feel like making it whole anymore.

Not sure what advice to give, but definitely you should get at least half your money back.
Being a poor student t doesn't give you the right to screw somebody else for your own benefit. I would go for a full refund too. itll be a good lesson for him not to screw prople over. Then load in your car and go break both his knees with steel pipes for making the rest of us look bad by selling sketchy crap on the internet.
Well, after a bunch of back and forth with this kid, I got a partial refund....after telling him it was either that or eBay would go after him to extract the full amount. It's probably not anyone's bag here, but the whole thing is for sale on the TB classifieds.

For anyone whos interested in the 4x15 build i'm slowly making progress on the drawing. A work trip to dallas that took all week really interrupted my progress. I need to add supports and get all the drawings done for the buscuit joints as well as get the whole grill assembly drawn still.
That thing looks like it will be a monster. Probably still lighter than an 8x10, though.
Why not do individual speaker grills? Lemmy style.

Played a benefit show with my non-metal band for the Ghost Ship victims' families tonight. The soundperson was a chick I'd gone to school with, actually, and a relation of Hartley Peavey. She mic'd my cab, because she knows her stuff.
I have a Dually built by Mark with individual speakers grills, love the look and cab. That 4-15 looks like it'll be sick!
What are y'all's favorite non-dirt pedals? I'm looking to shake things up with my sound, and every time I look at pedals I think "when will I actually use this?" and just stick with dirt.

A tremolo with exp pedal control is fun, phasers and wahs have their place. delay and reverb less so unless your guitarist(s) and drummer are willing to give you space for them otherwise the effect gets lost in the mix. I really like my EHX Bass Synth and POG2 for non-bass sounds, adds a whole new element.

I have a boss ce2 chorus clone from byoc that I really enjoy. It gives that neurosis bass chorus spooky vibe really well without seeming too cheesy. Then delay is basically my only other frequent use non dirt pedal.
Its coming along slowly the main grill assembly parts are coming together. Still am not sure how im going to so buscuit joints yet.
Wah is probably the pedal I use most often, more often than my fuzz pedal, actually. I often use it to make fills stand out more. Sometimes I use it to make almost a manual flanger sound when also using fuzz.
After that is probably reverb, which I use when I play with an e-bow, and also at the ends of songs or during some parts when I'm just holding a note or a double-stop.
I use my EHX Ravish Sitar pedal pretty often, mostly for the intro of a couple songs and this high up part in another when I'm also using reverb and wah.

Reverb is cool for filling out tonal space and can work well dirt. Not every bassist has that kind of room to work with in the mix, but if you do it's worth a try. I got an older Boss RV-2 which is warmer than the later Boss reverb stomps. Plus it's got a lower bit rate than more modern reverb units so it can get a bit of a lo-fi thing happening with it, producing stray artifacts, holding onto some reflections for longer.
In other news, my friend who just got back into playing bass (we shopped around and found him a sweet early 00s Thunderbird from Main Drag here in Brooklyn, also just got back into effect making. He's got an electronics background so yeah. He's gonna make me a Cream Pie Deluxe clone for the cost of parts! I've been on the lookout for one of these because I've wanted a good low-gain OD to add some shoegaze-y wash after the reverb when I'm bowing the bass with the cello bow. I love the sound of the very few demos online and like the fact that there's not much gain to be had. What is there sounds amazing to my ears. It's rad to have talented friends.
It's very weird, tends to only work okay on my A and D strings, and is quite glitchy. That said, it's capable of some really creepy sounds when combined with reverb and the Ravish Sitar.
I use my reverb (EHX Holy Grail these days) mainly for ambient segments of songs where I'm holding a note. I've also used it with fuzz and wah to create a sort of chaotic "wash" of sound.
