Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Finally got this SOB Sunn back and it's finally good to go. Posing with the Conrad shorty see thru.
Hi everyone, I'm writing here because this thread would be the right home for the instrumental post-rock-desert band I play in.
I'm currently playing my P bass throught overdrive/distortion (doing the last tests to finalize the signal chain, probably ending up with P bass -> VT Bass into COG Knightfall 66) using a Ashdown ABM 500 head and a MAG115 cab.
Lately the cab isn't holding up well with the volume needed and I would like to upgrade the rig. I thought about adding a 2x10 cab, specifically a GK CX 210, reasons being:
-lightweight: 10 kgs less than my MAG
-availabilty in Italy
-very good reviews
-power: 400w vs the MAG's 250, making it usable alone too for rehersals, and getting all the 500W from the head when paired with the MAG (which I will eventually upgrade)
-price
I will hopefully be able to try one next weeks but I'll never manage to bring bass head and pedalboard in a shop to try everything together, thus i'm looking for a heads up
I'm going towards a grunty overdriven sound, inspired by Young Widows & Russian Circles (of course not intending to copy)
Has anyone had good experiences with this kind of cab in this land of doom? I'll add that where I live not even venues have no room for the real deal 18" speakers or SVTs or fridges, so comparisons with that kind of gear is sadly useless to me.

I've been curious about MFD pickups and noticed G&L sell them for pretty cheap. Gonna put one of their split/P-bass pickups into a Fender copy I have......I've heard good things, so hopefully it's true.
Do you like the sound of your 15" cab? If so, just get another one.
What is your budget?
I would look for used gear if you can.
The mfd p bass pick is my favorite pick up ever. Put one in a Mexican p bass and it’s awsome.

I like the sound of it but it lacks the punch I'd like for these songs (while it works just fine with my other band, alt-rock), it sounds very good by itself but gets lost with distortion and other instruments a bit easily... Even tho it could be just the lack of watts.
My budget would be no more than 450$/cab; I check the used market of the area very often but all I find are old 60lbs 4x10s that I couldn't even load in my car, or mostly older models which I don't like or have a very poor W/weight ratio.
I need to test both the CX 115 and 210... If it wasn't for the weight I would have just got another MAG115 since they are ass cheap but I don't really want to lug 54kgs to get all of my head's W.

Hey Sonny, you say you're looking for more punch? I've only used a 115 GK neo cab and it was pretty clear, so I could imagine the 2x10 would at least be on par. @Sartori has the right idea IMO, get an additional cab if you are satisfied with your current one.
My personal recommendation would be a Mesa Boogie 112, 212, 410, or 210. I have the same amp, and besides the extreme versatility (which I love) paired with the 212 Mesa cab it has punch for days! I'll just post it here so you don't have to go pages back. Oh and if you're worried about volume, I barely go past 10/11 o'clock on the master since I've boosted the eq a bit.
Good to know this, I've been eyeing them lately as well and curious to their sound. How would you compare it to the Mexican fender pup? Oh and what year is your p bass from?
Brought my doomness to a diverse lineup Thursday nite at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn. Show was my gf's ep release party. Apparently some people were meditating during my set (my new material is more ambient than the tracks I've released in the last year). My gf's set had people in tears: it was super powerful. All in all, wild show.

It's guild js-2 bass with stock humbuckers (the 60s guilds had the bisonics, the 70s switched to humbuckers). I've owned a 60s eb-0 so I know the Gibson mudbucker intimately. The guild humbuckers are much much clearer with a lot of output. The have a bit of a mid hump but the top end is sweet and the low end can be authoritative with the volume dialed up. Lots of people prefer the bisonics which have a bit more character and midrange to my ears. Personally the humbuckers work better for me. They even sound clearer and more even to me than the dimarzio model one replacement pup for the Gibson mudbucker.
Cool. I checked out a few videos with the dimarzio model one and wasnt convinced that it sounded nicer than my stock Epiphone SG EB3 neck pickup, may be a decent alternative but just not my preference.
Yeah the model one has a lot of low end woof without the mudbucker's wool, if that makes sense. No real top end iirc much like the mudbucker. Totally a case of preference imo. I'm not sure if he still does it, but Curtis Novak will rewind a mudbucker into a bisonic which would give you a different animal if that's what your looking for. Of course, if you dig the mudbucker there really ain't nothing like it. Totally works in the right context.

In the meantime I'm working with this Vt Bass+COG setup. Seems simple but may manage to kill the guitarist next rehersal.
