I gotta catch em this time around. I'm done missing out on killer shows, marriage be damned...

I kid, I've already been excused for most any shows after she found out I passed on Soundgarden tickets for that last show. I just gotta cash in on it now.

Anyone know WTh is "Soul Metal"?

I responded to a vague CL ad for a metal bassist. So I ask what kinda metal. Dude replies 'Soul Metal'. I told him I prefer to play 'souless'metal. Lol

But now I'm wondering what the heck Soul Metal sounds like. Google is asconfused as me. Anybody know, or is this guy a true innovator and just spawned an entirely new genre?

No clue. If they didn't post any influences, maybe they are trying to do something new. Although it also conjures up thoughts of something close to Nu Metal.

I assume like "funk metal" was, well, funky and "nu metal" is rappy that "soul metal" is going to take its stylistic suggestions from R&B and soul music?

I'm not sure how that works, but then again who'd have thought that "funk metal" could be so catchy?

In the stoner\doom genres there isn't much of a dress code. It is a genre that revels in grungy simplicity so I don't think dressing "better" than the audience really means much. Although a band like Candlemass or Cathedral looks a little more like they "belong" on a stage than smaller bands. Geezer and Tony Iommi have invented a short of business casual metal attire. Meanwhile, you couldn't pick the members of Khemmis, Bison, or Anciient out of their audience.
I'm a pretty t-shirt and jeans sort of guy. Sneakers or boots. Maybe a chain wallet or necklace. If I was playing something else, I would snaz it up a little.
It totally depends one what you are playing and what image you want to convey to your audience.

I agree with you. I personally like it when a band dresses more or less like me. I feel like there's a connection there with the audience that I appreciate. I also think it feels more authentic when a band doesnt wear what is essentially a costume; it makes me feel they are more about the music than the image. that said, I like it when abbath wears shoulder pads and spikes and stuff ;) Recently I saw a big band, to me at least, and I have to say, the singer/guitarist was dressed a little too straight for black metal. It didn't end up being a distraction from their performance, as it turned out, because they were amazing. But my first impression was that he kinda wasn't trying very hard? Whatever, I know it's silly... but the thought crossed my mind (especially because I had seen video of him wearing spikey shoulder pads)
I play in a band, and we've discussed this stuff a little bit; How do you look like you " "belong" up there" without coming of as fake or pretentious? In the end, I figure if this guys is okay playing in sleeveless black t-shirt, I got nothing to worry about:

That's a weird trend in black metal that started a few years ago. I get that not everyone wants to do the whole leather armor and corpse paint thing, but looking like an Urban Outfitters ad just doesn't work. Hipsters are kind of the opposite of black metal.

I dunno, man, we spent the last page discussing on stage attire and hawaiian shirts...before you know it we'll be talking how light and effortless class D and 8" neo cabs are to carry and which fuzz pedal makes Mustang Sally sound best.

We've finally caught TB Prime's herpes. :)
