Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Speaking of which, what DO you guys wear onstage? I've heard that thing about "dress better than your audience," but I always wear the same thing: plain black short-sleeve T, jeans, and boots like I do every day. Plus a baseball cap to block glare and capture sweat. I've seen a lot of dudes in battle vests – not my thing. Haven't considered going shirtless since I turned 30.

We have an unspoken rule to wear black. We all usually wear band shirts , black jeans, black vans or boots. It's not a hard one to enforce because we all basically wear all black all the time anyway. Our singer will wear a light colored shirt from time to time, but not on stage. We have a spoken rule to not wear shorts or hats. I know that's cool for some bands but, generally, it looks too casual to me.

I used to wear my battle vest, but I get hot enough up there as it is; I don't need another layer. These days I basically wear sleeveless shirts. I tried the sleeveless shirt at a show in Houston, and never really looked back.
I actually buy shirts made with no sleeves, because my self-made cut-offs usually look sloppy. In summary, i wear the same thing I wear everyday minus the sleeves.

I some how don't think Matt Pike is wearing a Hawaiian shirt for the same reason Joey Fender at the Car Show is. He probably thinks its funny. And most importantly, as someone pointed out, he doesn't wear them on stage.

Definitely not Joey Fender ! But he may wear them too often for it to be a gag?. I've played multiple shows with him in the last year or two and he's often wearing one... and it's not the same one either, so he has a t least a couple to choose from. Dude is a character for sure.

we never discuss attire. generally jeans and tshirts although not always black. i'm not against light/bright colours and will wear light blues pinks and greens. even our band shirts that we sell are almost never black

I'd only wear shorts for a daytime/outdoor gig. Drummers have no dress code IMO. They're working so hard back there, no shirt/gym shorts is totally acceptable stage wear. What I really want is giant fans blowing on me all the time like Beyoncé 'cause I sweat like a pig under the lights. (Do pigs actually sweat a lot? Don't know.)

Pigs don't sweat. Thats why they roll in mud to keep cool. Now you know!

Only time I ever had any kind of remark about stage apparel in this band was when the guitarist wore the band shirt. He ran out of clean shirts supposedly. He’s old but not so old to not know better.

Not such a bad idea actually. Model it onstage, sell more merch. I guess if the guy has "dad bod" like me it could hurt rather than help sales...

I always thought Josh Homme/Queens of the Stone Age have good style. Kind of a rockabilly thing. Good hair helps. I agree with don't try too hard. I'd feel like a tool in leather pants, but some guys can pull it off. I can tell you our band has never once had a conversation about what we should wear onstage, which is fine by me.

Same here, never have besides a band of mine that failed quick because of the guitarists ego. He brought it up at a gig cuz I was wearing a tan rage shirt.

As long as I'm comfy I'm fine. I sweat like crazy no matter what, so I don't mind wearing a flannel shirt. I love me some flannel, but yeah normally jeans, shirt and vans mostly.

I tend to rock the engineer overalls and a black shirt and work boots. Not as a costume, but just because its what i wear in my free time. I have to wear business casual at my day job so I gotta rock my backwoods redneck uniform when I can.

a V bass or guitar? I saw he made a V bass recently. My latest Dunable, an R2, is in the works.

I am interested in a Dunable basd, mostly because of the 35" scale. I just don't know if I can swing that kind of chedder.

Out of curiousity, I've asked for a quote from Boult on a 35" scale flying V. Zebrawood top, model j pickups, raw maple neck. Etc.

I have a nice and ratty pair of urban camo shorts for just such occasions. Although I have found that some of the newer, dare I say stretchy, jeans actually breath really well. Because I am neither young, nor svelte, I have to watch it with some baggy clothing or I'll end up looking like someone's tubby uncle wondered onto the stage and started fiddling around with the a bass. Some people own their weight better than I do.

I ended up going to slim jeans after pics from a show surfaced and I looked like a blob Mind you, the wife had been saying I should go with a trimmer cut for a couple years at that point. So reasonably form fitting jeans (I run, but have thick legs) and tighter T shirts make her happy. I'll rock shorts for day light shows when its over 90, but am in an indie/americana band, not a metal band so camo shorts don't get much stage time for us fall and winter I'll wear button down shirts in cool patterns, but then you have all the worries of matching the shirt to the bass you want to play, etc, so most of the time, black it is.
