Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

The doom/core midi is pretty good but I think it's all code orange play throughs or variations of. With a little messing around in ezdrummer it can be useful. I get the most mileage out of the extreme metal and death metal midi packs but most of the stuff I'm writings sounds more like uprising era entombed or cursed rather than stoner rock.
The death metal midi is nuts. The guy from cattle decapitation is a freak.

I replied to a craigslist post for people in their 20s or 30s into Oathbreaker, Deafheaven, and Russian Circles. Three of us met for drinks and everything was going well, and then we started talking ages. They were both 30. It was a classic record needle scratch when I said I was 37, as if that somehow was outside the realm of people in their 30s. I was kind of anticipating it, but nonetheless it was pretty funny to me. Things got right pretty quick and I'm meeting up with them tomorrow evening. I'm hoping it goes well!

I was listening to The Vinyl Guide podcast w/ Billy Sheehan this morning. He talking about how bass is an instrument that has a low entry level of ability- you don't have to be a face melter to get a gig.
Haha. The guitar player I'm working with is 47. Odds are, given the drummers we've been contacted by, I'm likely gonna be the baby of the group at 35. Doesn't bother me. But yeah, guys in their 20s seem to care about it more. I know I did at the time. I was in a band at 22-23, we were all around that age (5 piece) except for the bassist who I think was 30+. I have more in common at 35 with guys/gals in the 30s-40s than I do with 20 somethings.
Late to the game, but I just discovered this podcast and am really digging it. There's a solid interview with Mike Scheidt from YOB a few episodes back, too.
I was nearly 37 when I started my current band with someone who was about 9 years younger than me. I think the doom/stoner/sludge/metal world age is less of a deal, with bands like YOB, Neurosis, Sleep, HoF still near the top of the heap. I guess with stuff in the vein of oathbreaker and deafheaven there will be more of a hipster contingent, where being judged by the trendster youth for something as silly as appearing older could be a consideration (among other trendy wieners). I hate that poopie. Im 13 years older than youngest member of my band and he and I do the majority of the heavy lifting in terms of gear, and live performances. I haul ass on and off stage. It has nothing to do with how many trips you've made around the sun, it has to do with work ethic. Age and the physical manifestation of age should absolutely not matter if you're doing your job and the band has a mutual respect for one another... sure as hell has never mattered to me. As long as you understand your audience and make sure that how you present yourself isn't too off the mark, no one should ever think of these things. If anything, it should be something us older guys use as a litmus test, because the younger generation definitely has different values, expectations, and perspective. I generally would try to stay away from a situation with people 10 yrs or more younger than me, as I think the band dynamic could be really...annoying (of course you have to explore the possibilities, but it would be a red flag for me). I can't stand most of them; the guys in my band are among the rare the exceptions.

I'm 47, and the rest of my band ranges from 47-51 now. We had our album release show Saturday night and packed the place. The first band was a bunch of guys in their 20's. They were great. To top it off, they were really cool and seemed very respectful of their elders (asking us questions on how they can improve, how we do things, etc.). It was pretty cool. To make it all very funny though, the guitarist's Mom was at the show. She went to high school with our singer!!!!

...and we're both no longer the oldest!
I've made no secret that I'm exclusively a bedroom rockstar, but every so often I go through CL and think, "well, maybe I could have fun..." and then always hit this mental wall where I know everyone posting ads for stuff I want to do is in their 20s and none of them want a guy old enough to be their dad to show up and say, "Well, I'm kinda new to this side of it."
(shrug)
I do always find it amusing, though, when guys in this thread post shots of their bands and more often than not it's people in a vague age range I can I identify with (which is generally to say somewhere north of 30, still).
