Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Sometimes I envy the coverbanders. They all complain about pay, getting paid for rehearsals(!), firing bandmembers indiscriminately for the slightest reasons, and have the belief(reality?) that all are easily replacable. Meanwhile in our doom slum, we are lucky to find enough warm bodies for a band, and even luckier to make a dime playing.

Back in the game. OG drummer has returned to the noise rock band. Bassman 100 through one cab was barely keeping up, but sounded good. Also, these Thunderbuckers aren't the hottest pickups, even raised as close as possible to the strings, which is weird because the one in my Dunable is pretty hairy. Maybe the stock pots/wiring are the weak point.

Wiring should make absolutely no difference unless someone's used really inappropriate stuff (like 24g phone wire or something); there's just not that much signal being passed across them to make a difference. Hell, I bet you'd lose more if it were too thick, rather than too thin.

Most the smart guys seem to suggest only difference pots make is in the range of adjument and the amount of high let through.

If you go through the trouble of rewiring it, remember to take an ohm reading off the pickups and see if it's drastically off.

Are they in the same spots as the other basS?

Truth!
I always laugh when they squeal about pay.
Finding other musicians is laughable too. Where is this bottomless pit of musicians to pick from?
The number of Doom\Stoner bands makes me forget how small the fan base is. I think ever fan is also in a band.

Probably! I've got a great guitar player in the fold, but still no drummer. Usual CL flakes so far. Though we've just got a rehersal room (I think next week its going to be ready) so we at least can jam and work on some poopie even if no drummer yet. I've been working up a 10-12 minute tune (maybe longer, I haven't timed it or completely finished the arrangement. . .)

Small world. Ive had your self titled album in my car for awhile. I got it for from my buddy who used to work at the guitar house of tulsa.

There were two Spector Hangs held there, and I brough a bunch of cd's for everyone to the 2nd one. Small world indeed.

They were still wearing their influences on their sleeves but man, they are making good use of them IMO.

There are some INSANE sounds in that thing perfect for these genres:

Kinda been lurkin this past week, but I use one and love how hairy it gets.

I had no idea this was happening. I guess I should read those newsletters before deleting. I love my ad200b but if i could find something with similar tonal character at significantly less weight, I'd be into that. I'm going to order one next week and Ill do a report when I get a chance to run it through it paces.

Just saw an ad for it too in distortion LTD, the replacement for tone report. I've been a fan of those, almost bought the combo to use for small gigs.

Shhh, I'm turning 35 friday and am having a hard enough time with it.

Man I must really be one of the toddlers of the bunch, turning 30 in 2 weeks. More than feeling bad about age, I've just been hit with disbelief over how much time has passed...

Happy bday though dude, I owe ya some beer.

I've never cared about age, if you're fun to be around and we can make music is all I've ever cared about.

@Novarocker - thanks for the bday wishes. I'm feeling pretty good today, I think I've gotten over the shock of being 35. But yeah, its more the shock that time passes so damn fast.

Anybody ever attempt to doom a 30" bass? I have a beater epi eb-0 plays great, thought about hotrodding it a bit, though unless I can rock BEAD or CFA#D# I dunno what I'd use it for

Exactly. I had a Gibson EB whatever for a minute. My old band played mostly in drop D and it sucked even for tuning that high (I tune much lower now). It was barely passable with a 120 and high action on the E....and it still just sounded like mud farting. Don't know how mad your skills are but,for me, there is no way I could be an articulate player on a shorty tuned to BEAD; It would have to be strung with tree trunks and have action so high you could drive a truck under There are so many cool short scales that I like too (Mike Watt bass) but I just have no practical use for them. I thought about picking one up and just running scales and practicing at home in std tuning, but figured it'd be a counterproductive to get used to the small fret spacing. They're neat, but tuning those things down is like playing cooked spaghetti noodles.

I have considered justifying the purchase of one "for my daughter" Like I said, I love em, I just dont play enough standard tuned stuff to have one.

I'm curious about this as well. I've been trying to locally find some of those EB Cobalt flats... they're higher tension and supposed to sound like rounds. I have a 32" bass that I wanna try them on for similar reason. Mostly that I like more snap like a 34". I have slinkies on my medium right now and they bend so easy, but clack too much when in anything lower than drop D or Eb std.

If I don't find some soon, I'll order them online and let you guys know how they are.

Haha, I was listening to this after I picked up the record this morning, and I had to google "Parker Chandler Gear" to see if there was anything recent. Nothing I could find...

I really dig this album - I think it'll be in heavy rotation for a while. Snagged the new HoF too...
