Weve been recording ours for awhile. We have an old 16 track mackie mixer into a tascam and basically close miced everything with sm57s and then two overhead sm57s on the drums. We get pretty decent quality recordings. And since we just leave everything miced up all the time all we gotta do is hit record on the tascam

I have audio interfaces and condenser mics so i've been thinking about just tossing one up in the middle or the edge of our practice space and just recording it that way on my laptop but like, that takes time to set up and get going and stuff. I thought about getting a small mic for my phone and using that but that seems fiddly.

Right now i'm borrowing one of those handheld zoom recorder things and that works really well and takes no time to setup... but its not a super high priority to get as I need to get some more grindy distortion and moar wattage first.

Zoom Q2N does video and/or audio really well. takes seconds to setup.

I own an H4n. I owned an H2n.

If you want a portable recorder with intention to only use the built in mics, the H2n has more features you’ll want, costs less and is probably better quality sound, too. It feels cheaper, though. But the built in mid side and 4 channel surround is awesome.

The H4n adds the two XLR inputs but sheds all the surround options with the internal mics. You can still do mid side with two external mics though.

I know the 4 has a big ole editing suite in it, dunno about the 2 but to be honest I can’t imagine using it in any case. That’s what computers are for.

Right on. I'm leaning more towards the 4 but just setting the 2 up in the middle of the room and forgetting about it for 2hrs is temping.

Onboard editing sounds like a very not useful use case to me, but I can a use for it in if I was stuck in Tibet for a month or something.

If that's your goal, pick up the H2n then.

I mean, I suppose the nice thing is you can connect the H4n to a mixing board via the XLR (or 1/4", their dual-use jacks), but the H2n has an 1/8" jack which I believe you can do the same thing with.

just wondering if you have any recommendations of amp heads to use with my set up.

I’m using two barefaced super compacts with an Ashdown ABM 500 but I have a hankering for a tube amp. I use a fuzz pedal all the time (muff with a blender so not too fuzzy)

I’m totally lost with tube amps and how much wattage I would need for a decent live set up. I know I could go out and buy the most watts I can find but that might be overkill. Is 100 watts enough or should I be looking at more? I think I would need to be pushing the tubes hard to get a good tone.

I’m looking at used amps (in the uk) such as

Ashdown CTM100
Orange ad200
Ampeg v4b

Alot of that depends on your guitarists volume. But if you are getting away with 2 x 12s and an abm 500 id say an ad200 would be more than enough and if you dont care too much getting clean any of the 100 watt heads would probably keep up as well. I like having the option of being clean and loud so i always choose way more watts than i really need

The easy answer is SVT, as it will destroy just about any guitar rig. I just got a 100w Marshall super bass clone. I run it thru a very efficient 4x12. Clean headroom is really not there at doom volume. If you want loud cleans, svt or maybe a [if you have the $] 200w hiwatt or similar. 100w will be "loud enough" but not clean. At all. Think Lemmy.

My previous band was all about Marshall and occasionally some Randall.
The current one isn't doom\stoner at all. Mesa Rectifier and a hotwired Yamaha amp.
When I am going DYI recording I really like the Orange Rockerverb, but I don' know how legit the tone is compared to the real deal.

The best tube bassamp I ever heard so far is definitely the Sunn 300t. Even with gain at 11 you won't lose low end and with a decent cab the sound never gets muddy. The 300W may be kind of over the top, but who cares? :P
Unfortunately, they are really hard to find...

I have a samsung S8 that has usb-c. whats nice about that is I have a newer macbook pro that also uses usb-c so i have a bunch of that stuff, dongles/etc. I've brought take my type c dongle and used my phone to my mixer and that works pretty well, but for something totally different... I've been also thinking about trying something like this: Invalid Link Removed for phone stuff as I still have a 1/8" jack on my phone.
