Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I tend to use my wah towards the end of my chain as a big filter on all the effects rather than like a traditional wah. I demovids has a video on steve von tils rig and hes using his similarly. Id like to check out one of the wilson freaker wahs hes using. Its a modified parachute wah. Sounds killer when he uses it.

Can you give me an example of that? I've never really listened to Neurosis and only briefly Tribes of Neurot, so I have no idea what he means when he talks about it in the demovid video.

Ill see if i can find something specific. I saw him doing it live, but i cant remember which song it was i was pretty out of my mind at that point. Then i started doing it. Basically its just sweeping the wah slowly through its range. So you get this ascending wooshing sound. Working on digging out a video of it in action

I use the Freaker Wah, it’s a Tychobrahe on a budget. It can do a good impression of Geezer or Cliff, and it can get weirder than they ever did to boot.

No recordings I can share from any of my once-and-future S/D bands but here’s an ambient track that I forced my current pop-psych band to include on our release:

If you can deal with the poppiness, it’s featured in a couple other songs on the album.

About 42 or 43 minutes in during the interlude in the doorway you can hear him goin kinda ham on it. This is the chicago ironworks version. I think hes using the wilson one now. He was when i saw them.

Edit: id started watching this just to track down the wah, but before i knew it id watched the whole thing. Those dudes are just always amazing.

I saw that one too. Kinda leaning that way or the mini dunlop.

No sh!t I did the same. Only album I ever got into was Through Silver, need to change that.

Out of convenience I run mine first as well. Sounds great into most any dirt I've tried. I should try some dirt before. Lot of fun using cocked wah and delay or pitch modulation.

Btw here's a recording with the wah in the intro. IIRC I'm splitting it into an Acapulco into a vox night train and through my ashdown with a bit of preamp tube grit. Wah first.

I'm still surprised that I can run my bass w/out an hpf into that cranked vox combo...only 15w with a greenback. I even crank the low eq on the amp and I've yet to see signs of speaker fatigue.

Hmmm... I have an Aftershock which I use for both – mostly OD. I switched out my compressor to run after (as a limiter I guess) and then into the VT which I'm using as "special sauce" when I have my own rig. Where would you put the wah in that chain?

I assume the VT does more than grit? If so, Aftershock -> Wah -> VT -> Amp. Compressor soemwhere after the wah, but wherever.

But, just try an experiment. Move some cables around. Use the VT to just provide some "tube overdrive" grit, set the Aftershock for whatever they call their Muff emulation, and stick the Wah in the middle.

OD into Wah sounds good, right? Real dramatic. OD into Muff soudns good, right? Really makes it come alive. Wah into Muff is kinda underwhelming, it's not that real dramatic swoosh of the dirt before wah.

Now, all three. Bam. Super f'ing sweepy dramatic sounds: total screeching Cliff Burton screams at one end; low, thick Electric Funeral whoomps at the other, and with no wah at all, that muff has still got that extra heavy crush behind it.

Cool. I'll have to play with it.

here's the worst example of anything you could want.
the effects order is a DOD 250 -> GigFX Subwah (not sub mode) -> Creation Audio Holy Fire -> DOD Carcosa. Bass is a Blacktop Jazz both pickups on full.

0-14 is "clean," no effects.
17-27 is 250 into wah.
27-35 is wah into Holy Fire.
36-47 is 250 into wah into Holy Fire.
48 - 103 is wah into Carcosa.
104 - 130 is 250 into wah into Carcosa.
130 to end is 250 into "subwah" into carcosa. not that you can really hear the difference, but whatever.

there's no talent, but ample clipping. i'm feeling really apprehensive about posting what's literally four notes over and over but whatever, hopefully this is somewhat worth it.

(did that work right?)

(and i can't seem to make the awful picture of me go away)

(this is what i do for you people, y'know)

(and i'm pretty sure my neighbour is super pissed at me right now coz he works from 3am to 11am)

I liked the 2 with the holy fire best. Then I had to look up that pedal. Damn GAS

To be fair, none of this is my "regular" setup. Normally I have the 250->wah in an LS2's loop blended with clean and all of that flows into either the Holy Fire or Carcosa. I suppose if I was thinking I would've done an example of that, too, eh?

(I also haven't used the wah since I bought the envelope phaser a couple months ago)

So, let's try it again. This, to me sounds way better, and not just because I didn't clip the recorder so hard but because I'm blending clean and wah.

Bass ->250->GigFX Subwah->LS2 loop AND Bass->LS2 on A+B Mix.

LS2->Compressore->Holy Fire (or) Carcosa->Acoustic 280.

(sigh, hung up on the profanity filter to an outside link)

0-20ish Holy Fire solo.
20ish you hear the click for the 250->Holy Fire, then wah somewhere after starts.
115ish is 250->Carcosa, then wah shortly afterwards.

I think around 2 minutes, I stick the wah into "subwah" which, again, doesn't sound any different on my desktop computer speakers, but the walls of my room reflect the change.

And from 3m10s is my stupid prunes and custard because goddamnit I bought it, and someone needs to acknowledge it. :) (blended 50/50 P&C/250).

That's a real bad ass sounding wah!

It's not the wah, it's the combination of everything.

Drive into drive makes the second sound better, and drive into wah makes the wah sound more dramatic. So it all builds, you're just using the dramatic sound of wah'd OD and then punching it into another pedal.

The other half is adding the bypassed sound of the OD/wah combo into the second drive pedal, so that you don't get that extreme change from the wah, you've always got the base sound plus the dramatic addition of the wah.

Works well with any pedal like that, I think. That DOD 250 also sits behind another pedal that does phasing and envelope filtering, so you can have the same effect with them, the real over the top modulation paired with the raw aggression of the fuzz.

I guess this is my thing today?

That's various permutations of the same concept, but instead of the wah it's a Pigtronix EP2 Envelope Phaser with the DOD250 in an LS2 loop, and then clean bass and that loop run into first the Holy Fire and then the Carcosa.

Should go just dirt, then phaser, then envelope. Just HF +mod (still blended), then just 250+mod, then 250+mod into HF, then just Carcosa then 250+mod into Carcosa.

But I wasn't really paying attention to order, I was trying to finish before my kids came charging in. :)
