i did not really like mastodon at first. then Crack the Skye came out and changed everything. After that i ended up appreciating the older stuff more. i like all their albums but once more around the sun is kind of weak. Emperor of Sand was by far my favorite album of 2017.

the thing about them is there is no BS and no egos, no clichés. I liken them to a modern version of Rush in how they ineract with each other and the public. they seem like good people that are inspired to write music for the fun of it compared to a band like Electric Wizard who seem to half-ass a new album when they need attention.

The very first time I heard them was Colony of Birchman, and I wasn't impressed. That album was too proggy for me.
Later I listened to Crack the Skye and I "got it." I don't love every song since, but I respect them and what they are trying to do. Are they a little bit of a gateway band now? Maybe. They are still much heavier than the "pop radio rock" moniker I've seen trv cvlt metal gatekeepers slam them with. There is nothing wrong with a little song structure, a memorable chorus, or dynamics.

Hey doomerstoners, it's been a while since I rapped at ya.... so the last band is still in online-recording-demo mode still, going good and my drum chops are coming back. Over the past few weeks I've found 3 other bands on craigslist I might be interested in. Today I went to band try-out #1, a classic/70's rock thing, w/ original tunes and overall kind of vanilla, but the songs aren't too schitty and they can play. I locked in pretty good w/ the drummer, but they were really picky about how the bass lines needed to be played 100% true to the recordings....like, "just play down-strokes here, then play the root in 8th notes there, etc." They weren't bad bass parts, but I could tell they were written by a guitar player. Oh yeah, and that - this band's name is the guitarist/singer's last name, i.e. Dio, Van Halen, Bon Jovi etc. Two red flags right there....we'll see......the other 2 bands might be more promising. One sounds more stonery and the other kinda more surf/punk/garage.

Spent the weekend recording some rough ideas. More as a way to see what it takes to do this stuff, but turned out pretty well considering it was all DI and headphones due to having a sleepy and sick toddler. Gives me hope to get all this stuff done some time! Been wanting to record an actual complete song (and eventually album) for years. If only I could drum.

Cool going to check them out. Stomach flu has me home today too, hating life. Wife and oldest son also down for the count from it too.

In weird news, High on Fire won a Grammy. I'm not a big Grammy fan, but cool that they got some props from the normie industry.

started watching southern steel a while back. 10 minutes in i had heard the word "groove" like 50 times. turned it off. :)

maybe one day i'll revisit. such hawks is the ultimate stoner/doom documentary

oh totally. i could list pages of bands, but I won't. i get why people enjoy it and i get why people don't like what we do.

Same boat here. I keep recording snippets so I won't forget. I can part way drum, but I need to sit down and either spend some time on it or my drum machine so I can do the same.

Really I've just been spread a bit thin lately with the newest kid. I'm really hoping all these projects finish up soon like they're supposed to.
