Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I remember a photographer a while back saying that when he had to check his camera gear he'd tell the airline it was firearms because they have incredibly strict regulations about keeping track of guns. I don't know whether that would work these days, or how true it was to begin with, but it's an interesting approach.

"What's in that guitar case? A shotgun."

Every time I've flown with guns I have had to unlock it and show security the guns were unloaded.

How many of you guys use HPFs? Looking at getting one for my small board. I have an FDeck HPF3 for my main board, but am just wondering if there’s anything else out there I should consider. I only use my current HPF for speaker protection, and not for tone shaping. It lives in my FX loop to reduce as much unnecessary mud as possible before the power amp. For those familiar with the FDeck, both knobs are always at max. So anything else out there in that same functionality range that isn’t prohibitively expensive?

broughton is the only other one i know of.

I don't use an out board HPF. When playing B runnings I roll back the bass just a little and focus on low mids.
Some amps have a passive HPF in the pre and the newer Mesa Subway amps have an active HPF.

I just got a Broughton L+HPF and I have to admit that I am stunned by the difference it makes. Not so much in how it affects my tone but how much it allows me to shape my tone in ways that were never possible without a crap ton of other EQ adjustments and effects all working in concert. With just bass > H+LPF > Amp there are sounds that I can hear that I've never heard before. Start adding in effects and it's like Christmas Day... every pedal now has a whole new voice and a whole new additional range of tones. They now combine in different ways than before. The interplay between pedals during gain stacking is completely different and combos that didn't work before due to 'too much going on' now provide some amazing results.
I'm not trying to sell or convince anyone of anything... just sharing, what for me, is turning into a foundation shifting experience.

I know, right? My amp just sounds clearer and more defined when I use my HPF. I started using it for cone control, and I noticed a huge effect in that regard, but I also noticed that my amp was often louder and more articulate without trying to reproduce the ultra low frequencies I can’t hear anyway.

I know this, but I have seen firsthand how it helps my cabs with cone control and generally increased volume and clarity in my GK amps. They may have an HPF of sorts, but I know that the FDeck definitely helps too.

Heheh, PBS shows the man behind the myth that is pretty much my favorite pedal company. I love you PBS, and I love you Idiotbox! The interview portion could be better (hey, it's small town PBS and I'm being a critical [EXPLETIVE DELETED]), but you get a nice bit of his own circuit work, get to watch him work on what looks like some older Mystery Effects, and see his collection of arcade cabs. :)
