Speaking of projects, I got a '70s J-bass off craigslist for cheap (super clean condition). That's because the truss rod is screwed up, but my guitar tech connection thinks adding some washers might fix it. If so this will be the score of 2019. Not really a J-bass guy but I can't pass up a deal.

Three of my favorite p bass tones are from these albums. I love the production over all on them, but the bass really nails a useful, audible tone on them.

Thankfully, my rigs have always been larger than my guitar players’ rigs. I am fully prepared to win (and have won in the past) the volume war.

Now, does I sound good at that volume... maybe not. But I get my point across when I rumble their amps atop their cabs.

Of course I was going to route a hole for a soapbar about 1/2" from the bridge and set it up for BEAD though.

Heh, I have almost the same plan but I have been debating between a Thunderbird bridge pickup or a soap bar.

Sounds like a definite option. I’m cool with any number of pickups really. Stingray could be an option as well. I’m wanting to get a different vibe here lately. Maybe something with a bigger body as well. That was my interest in the RD or Bird, but I don’t know of many basses that have a double P other than BC Rich.

The Blacktop Jazz, the BC Riches, and the occasional old Japanese oddball like some Arias are all factory available. Also any Precision Bass and 10 minutes with a router, as well.

I hand chiseled a pickup route and (poorly) freehanded another with a trim router. It’s not hard. Someone with a clue could do it easily enough, and for idiots like me there’s pickup rings.

Also, I sold off an old Trace Elliot SS head I had laying around and turned around and ordered a tolexed rack sleeve for the 800rb, a cry baby bass wah, and a mxr bass distortion [the fuzzrocious designed one].

I've wanted a wah for awhile, but I finally have an excuse as there's a bass/drums break in one our tunes that cries out for a wah.

Also, good call on whoever here had recommended chromes. I got the 5 string [and tossed the high string] set and even in C standard, the tension is not too crazy.

Since my amp obsessions are about over, I am thinking about putting together a p bass with a jazz neck. I had a '50s classic' or whatever its called fender p bass I loved the tone of, but it had the old school 1.75" nut treetrunk neck which I did not dig at all. Maybe one of those loaded bodies married to a geddy lee neck or a warmoth roasted maple neck.

Since my amp obsessions are about over, I am thinking about putting together a p bass with a jazz neck. I had a '50s classic' or whatever its called fender p bass I loved the tone of, but it had the old school 1.75" nut treetrunk neck which I did not dig at all. Maybe one of those loaded bodies married to a geddy lee neck or a warmoth roasted maple neck.

You might want to look at Lakland's Duck Dunn (then)/Bob Glaub (now) models. That's what they are and the electronics in there just seem to have extra oomph that stock Fenders don't have.

50s classic player and the roger waters sig both have those huge necks. I have big hands but like thinner narrower necks. C'est la vie

Chromes are awesome, I have a light gauge set on my precision bass and they're awesome for the mellower stuff with a muff. Nice and fuzzy and it sits surprisingly well, imo.
I've started looking around for a jazz neck for my precision as well, my ibbys spoiled me for playability and their general not baseball-ness.

Does anyone here play with guitarists that tune extremely low? If so how do you work with that? Do you try to downtune a corresponding amount (like down to D0/E0 territory)? Or do you stay in a more sane tuning?

(Note that I'm not saying there's anything wrong with tuning down to E0 or lower...I'm just wondering if that's what you'd do or if you'd approach it a different way. I think everyone could agree, though, that tuning down that low while making a good sound is difficult.)

Whats your definition of super low? Seems in this genre most the time the bassists keep the octave below. Bongripper amd conan are both tuned down to F# and the bassist just tunes another octave below

I'd say something like D0/E0, which is at or below 20 Hz, is my definition of super low.

You guys are killing me! We're getting ready to clock out and everyone's giving me looks for cracking up haha!

I don't have too much trouble with dive on mine. It took me a while to find the right strap placement to deal with the longer scale of the Euro 5LX. As adverse as I usually am to wearing my basses up high, higher up around my midsection worked out the best. After I adjusted to the scale length, now 34" feel weird.
I have two now. I purchased the first one when the second one was no longer available. Then I found the second one again. They both have EMG pickups and preamps. Definitely a gritty and in your face tone. Not surprisingly it works very will with a B7K ultra. It seems like Darkglass drive pedals are almost made for Spector, Warwick, and Dingwall.

I wish I could have made a P bass work for my last band, which was more doom\stoner. I just never fell in love with the tones I got. Using a pick would have helped, but I can't play with a pick for more than a song or two before my hand craps up.
It would have also helped if my guitar players understood their tones better. One thought that Zakk Wylde was "doom" because of "doom crew" and the other never really understood the genre, even though he really liked Mastodon. They never left room for the bass.

Been there, almost went the same route as @Jolagh. Then I found some great guys to play with that happened to be friends. Guitar player is still a little flaky though.

Pbass split coil took a long time for me to understand, but then I realized to pull back a decent chunk on lows and push the low and high mids. At least for me it completely opened up my spot in the mix. Doesn't work for everyone for sure, but I'm glad I found it
