Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Even though they definitely aren't in the realm of Doom or Stoner, they have some grooves that I think doom and stoner fans can dig. Memoriam released another album last week. It finally feels like they have their song writing and production dialed in.

Didn’t realize that was out yet! Love that band, even though they’re not quite Bolt Thrower level awesome.

Agreed. They are their own thing, but a good spiritual successor. I wasn't totally on board with the last album. This one sounds the most complete.

Just to throw in I feel like its a huge benefit to use a compressor with class D amps to get the responsiveness a little more tubeish. If you're feeling uninspired by your SS Class D try it and you'll get a lot closer to what you're looking for.

So it sounds like the new Baroness is still a solid maybe. The reviews I've read on it were pretty mixed. I will say I saw Torche at Chicago Doomed & Stoned and they played some stuff off their one that comes out in a few weeks and that sounded like its going to be a great album.

Do any of you have "new bass anxiety"?
After a number of long awaited pieces of gear (sometimes VERY long awaited, like the Rusty Box) that I found in the end dissatisfying/disappointing, I have anxiety for this new bass that is on its way and that is the most expensive thing I ever bought. EVER.
Will it have a really LOUD output, like my current one?
Will it sound BETTER? Harsher, heavier?
And what IF NOT? Jeeesus why can't I just enjoy things

Hehehee, I'm actually kind of the opposite. Every time I get something new, THIS is the last one I'll ever need to buy! It's the greatest! Then after a few weeks, reality sets in, and the old instruments that used to serve in that function call my name. Fortunately, I don't sell stuff often, so I just walk over there and pick the old one up again. If the new one eventually ends up in the rotation with the old ones, it's done well.

And yeah, you didn't mention what you bought! What is it?

You might find it a *little* heavier, personally though I love the sound of aluminum necks. There’s a very certain type of bitey growl that I associate with them

Definitely on the more spacey/progressive side - I'm digging it. And the end of Weißensee brings that Elder thunder! Jack's tone is super warm on this EP. For anyone wondering, it's part of a new series called Postwax.

I know what to expect from and aluminum neck because I already have a Kramer...
I just wonder how does this new one compare with the one I am accustomed to! Especially curious (and anxious) about those pickups

Anybody use an Earthbound Audio Throat Locust? Thoughts? Looks like I may be going down the HM-2 hole again. Got it all figured out a few months ago, but since getting my Iron Pig and Supercollider and seeing how insanely easy they were to dial in, I’m wondering if I should give their HM-2 a go.

A little off subject, but I’m looking for a new bass. I have a Hwy 1 Jazz that I’m thinking about trading for a different bass style.

Right now I have a 3 other fretted and one fretless Jazz, a Warwick $$ 5, and an Ibanez 506 that rarely sees much playtime.

The new bass will most likely see D standard tuning exclusively. I want to get away from the tones I have, and look for something different this time around.

I’m curious if maybe a TBird or an RD might do the trick but nowhere close has either bass in stock. What say y’all? Something else? My budget is the Hwy 1 and maybe $200.
