Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hmmm. I dunno if’n they doom, but they thump and thud. When I was doing a lot of drunk-grass gigs on eub, I considered getting one as a super portable back up. I played a few of them in Feb, and the solid variety with wound (but still really floppy) strings might could doom.Speaking of new basses, I've decided I'll never own an Ashbory so I'm gonna buy one of those stupid ukelele basses. Do they doom?
I originally wanted the solid body/little bass styled one coz the uke thing just irks me and makes me feel like I should be a teen girl on instagram, but listening to people's demos the hollow bodies sound so much better.
At this point, it's up in the air. I'm gonna go solicit opinions about hollow vs solid, frets vs fretless once I get to a point where I feel like I'm ready to spend.
Nothing super cutting-edge going on here, but I'm definitely digging it right now...
Anybody spent any quality time with an Ampeg Micro VR head? I know, D class....meh. I've got 7 (?) fuggin' amps and I was thinking about getting rid of a couple....mayyyybe
There's a super cheap Micro head near me, been thinking about it because they're small/light, supposedly sound good, and I'm lazy. Would be used with either one or both Schroeder 1x15's as an 'old fart bad back pussy weekend warrior weakling' rig. Crocs and fedora needed!

never did much for me. i much prefere the th500. the ampeg just sounded fake to me. can't really explain it.
I actually like the tones I've gotten out of class d markbass gear. Granted, it was at GC volume levels.
I'm trending in the other direction. I may just end up with an SVT and a fridge. Every damn time I play an SVT it's 100% what I want sound-wise.
I wanted to get one for a practice amp and struggled with it for weeks but couldn't get it to sound anything like I was hoping it would. I use mainly Ampeg for my bass amps because I love the "Ampeg sound" and am very familiar with the Ampeg tone stack. The Micro VR and CL both sounded anemic and were just missing the mark by a mile. I had more success with the solid state Portaflex line but, ultimately, went with a PF-20T and didn't have to give up anything, tone-wise and ended up with a smaller, old fart friendly
laugh set up. It'd recommend either the PF-20T or the PF-50T. Just my 2 cents, FWIW.

That's what I've been hearing about those as well. I wonder if the 50w is good enough for a slightly ear friendly practice volume. They sound great in stores for sure though.
+1 on the pf50. Those sound great. I plunked around on one several times at a local music store.
Was it the music go round? I can't remember which one I frequented for a while that had one.
I'm just curious if you've tried any of the amp modelers, and if so how well they compare to the real SVT?
Thanks dudes, sounds like the Micro's a waste of time. I'm just going to use my old Dano guitar amp unless I need to bust out the big guns.

Ive tried some and ive also played some good virtual amps like the UA and amplitube plug ins. They get a fine sound, but theres a specific feeling that comes when playing a real tube amp through a big cab. It feels different. The powertube part of it just brings our a certain harmonic or something. Ive had a really nice tube preamp made by dunwich which sounded great but even with a 3000 watt power amplifier it just didnt move the air in the same way.
I use Amplitube for recording. It has a few Ampeg models and they sound pretty accurate to me. At least as far as what a recording of one sounds like.
I'm one of those guys who has no issues with Class D and I'll likely never own anything other than Class D. In the audiophile world I'm one of the people that thinks specs tell the whole tale, at least when it comes to solid state. BUT at the same time I'm skeptical that we'll ever be able to truly duplicate the idiosyncrasies of tubes through some sort of digital copy. So anyway I was just curious about your take on it. Keep on keepin' on.
Yeah amplitubes and even the ua svt plug in both sound pretty accurate to a recorded sound. I just meant that in a room they dont have the same feel. I think it comes mostly down to the power amp and they wait it distorts versus thebsolid state amps primarily used with modelers.
