Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah I wasn’t sure if it was a slow chorus or phaser, some kind of filtering, or just a struggling amp doing its thing. If I go too far beyond dirt and delay I’m utterly lost.
I’ve historically been modulation-adverse, but this year the phaser is on my list, probably the Phase 95.

It's got a boatload of modulation options in it, including envelope filters, flangers, some weird phasery-with-delays plus an emulation of the MXR Phase pedals (I don't know which number, but I believe a fair assessement is "all of them") and the EHX Small Stone (which sounds better to my ears).
It's a really handy all around toy, and you can dip your toes into it and see what direction you want to go. I did buy a dedicated phaser, a Pigtronix EP2, to replace it and then just started using the MS60b for other stuff isntead.
That's the best. I've always wondered if that's why a lot of 1-2 knob pedals seem better than those with infinite tweaking. At least when first trying em.
+1 for the ms60b. That thing covers all my modulation for shows, even muff fuzz needs. Saves tons of space on my board. I'll echo what @gfen said, awesome regardless of price. May not be best in any one category, but does a damn good job replicating all those pedals. So much so, that no one will be able to tell in a mix. Some people don't care for the dirt, but the rest is great either way.
So I'll try to get more up when I can, especially some sound clips, but I finally got my bass build together and functional. Still have a lot of cosmetic work to clean up and I'm going to refinish it and add a gloss CC. Thing is so beefy, but can get so much bite and growl.
Hmmm. My Superfuzz has Germaniums in it. Would like to build another sometime and put Silicones in it. The Ge's can be touchy to temperature changes. I can actually hear the tone change a little as they heat up. And I'm not one of those corksniffer types either.

I primarily use the Swede with guitar but sometimes, it just sounds so damn good to hear that chainsaw being pushed by the low B on a bass 
I'm going to try Aion Electronics' version of the HM-2, the Graviton, next.
I've got an old Red/Blue Super-Fuzz with germanium transistors, at least two transistors have been replaced over the years, and it still generally sounds the same when I get it back. My understanding is that the SF circuit's tone doesn't depend much on the transistors, it's more dependent on the diodes. However, I haven't tried building copies to find out how true that is.
Thanks! It may be farther down the road than I'd like, but I do plan on making a "budget" friendly version of it. I'm working with @rutrho on the wiring/circuits for it. To be honest she's made a ton recommendations and suggestions on workflow for the whole project and more, mad props!
My goal is to initially make a 1 pup bass and guitar model that has some unique tonal capabilities. A passive and an active version. Basically make something that plays well, can get unique sounds, and affordable for all the players we see at these smaller shows and us of course.
Back when I was playing regularly in Lansing, a lot of people in that scene liked the different sounds you could get from odd ball guitars. That and many wanted something that looked different than what everyone was playing. A lot of those guys and girls were using guitars/basses that I never knew existed.
I don't expect or want it to become my only income, just something on the side that's fun. Really the only meger profits would just go back into building more or for equipment/tools. I've noticed from lurking in the luthiers corner, especially from guys like Bruce, that the real cost on building is the tools and labor. Most of them said something like "for a $2000 bass, I make what comes out to $10/hr."
Building that one was so much fun. The slow progress of getting this off the ground is a huge test of patience, but is working well with how busy life is.

Thats what I hear too. Most ppl that know way way more about pedals than I do say that the SF circuit isn't too picky with what transistors are used.

A lot of people seem to be obsessed with germanium especially guitar players, but I usually prefer silicon.

I also love HM-2 on bass, but actually prefer the Arion Metal Master for it. It seems to have more low mids or something (I don’t know, I always feel inadequate describing tones), but it just seems to suit bass a little better to me. Not quite as shrill highs, maybe a little rounder overall? Still, definitely an HM-2 though. It is my favorite on bass, and I’ve tried a few boutique ones. Thus far, the simpler they are (and typically closer to the original) the more I like them.
Never even knew it existed, cool looking bass. I kinda modeled it after a firebird headstock, but that ebm is essentially the same thing I did.
It may be a year or more off, but I do intend to produce these. My target price range is Squier VM and CV models. Very low margin, especially for the hours worked. But I do intend to streamline production and this really is only meant to be a business in a loose sense, ie not in it for the money. More like a hobby that funds itself and gets something that has original style/sound for those that want it.

Love the look and the reverse headstock! I’d be in for one as well if/when you ever decide to build a few more.
