Haha that one in Hawaii? Good to know they don't cut it well. I played an older yba or similar combo up at motor city guitar and amp thought it sounded great at low volume, but yeah low volume...

Lately I've been trying to talk myself out of a bassman ten or one of the 100w heads. Damn if I don't care about clean headroom.

I bought a MusicMan HD150 Head w the bass channel instead of reverb last week for $300. so far it’s been pretty satisfactory for loud, punchy cleans! Almost like a certain coveted solid state traynor amp

Nice, I like the looks of the musicman amps. I don't doubt the volume ability of those 50w bassman's, and I almost always play with a healthy amount of grit. I just wish I could try one at a jam to see if it holds enough clean at that volume.

I think it probably will, I remember seeing a guy in a loud sludge punk band using one, but I can't remember if it was 50 or 70w.

I think when I do finally bite the bullet I'd go with one of the 100w ones just to be safe. @cornfarmer didn't you used to have one?

After selling my v4b to fund an svt in the name of headroom I regret it now more than ever. Super cool old school head that would drive and grind in a fantastic way. The svt will but it’s gotta be basically too much for house playing unless everyone is gone.

This does a hell of a job at anything heavy/metal/doom/punk/thrash/fuzz, etc. but it can give the cleanest you could ask for. It all depends what you feed it. 1967 Bassman. 50 watts that'll do it all, no kidding.

Have you tried making a mixdown with no compression whatsoever?

That's what the second clip is... just raw audio from the mic'd amp. No EQ, compression, etc.

This second version is better in the bass/drum front, i think it's pretty good. In my opinion one thing that would make the guitar sound better, would be cutting some of the higher frequencies

I was thinking the same and then said, oooh, let me try this ... and this... and we all see where this is going.

I need to back the truck up and go back to basics and take it one step at a time instead of 5 changes at once, lol

My 100w super bass-ish head does grimy Lemmy stuff, but doesn't have enough clean low end in a [doom] band situation. Hence my 2 amp set up - I use the GK800rb kinda like a subwoofer, just adds in the rearend to the sound.

If you want high headroom, go for the Bassman 135, which is an utralinear design. I dunno much about amp design, but ultralinear tube amps tend to go really loud before distorting [Sunn 2000s, Hiwatt, Simms Watts]. They also run cheaper because they are waaaaay too much headroom for most guitarists.

EDIT: Actually the silver face 100s and 135s are roughly in the same ballpark on Reverb at least. The Dual Showman [more-or-less a fender twin] is another old Fender head that would work. Those are a tad more, but still obtainable for under a grand. Though an ampeg v4b does all you want too...

Yeah, I have to agree. The second mix is generally better. I think the guitar is scooped a bit much and has a bit too much high end as well. I guess you're not putting a bunch of EQ on the guitar, and that's how it sounds, huh? A scooped sound has that problem in a mix, which is part of why I love/hate the Super-Fuzz with the tone switch on the scooped sound. Nothing sounds more huge by itself, but it's always difficult to put in a mix.

Here's the settings that I'm running for each:

• The scoop switch is NOT engaged
• I usually run at almost full gain but in the first recordings the sound was thinner than [insert you favorite thin anecdote here], so I dialed back the gain and that thickened the sound back up.
• As you can see, I definitely have room to bump the mids and dial back the highs, so I'll give that a shot

I chose the PF route because I new that I'd be doing 99% studio work from now on and I went with the 20 vs the 50 simply because I wanted to be sure I would like the results before spending more for the 50. Turns out I love the sound of the 20 and will just stick with that.

Jawohl, mein Herr. Had the 100w and it did loud stuff fine with a single 15 or 2x15 with modern speakers (neo's). One channel on mine had been modded with a detent pot controlling the grit/overdrive (voltage mod? bias mod?). This sounded better on guitar than bass, but still useful. Great amp, but an early 70's V4-B showed up in the neighborhood and I sold the Bassman to fund the Ampeg, and I'm officially done now.

I'm torn between a bassman and a v4b. The ten combo looks great and I know you can pull the amp out and mount it in its own case if you want. I guess I worded it badly, I don't care too much about headroom, unless it's super gritty/distorted at gig volumes even when you want clean. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 would be enough, but it's always better to have more right? Haha, anyway my hesitation with checking out the 135 and other linear bassmans is I've heard that they don't sound as warm/good. I'll probably wait till I can try one, but the prices on em aren't bad and the resale is fine.

I keep an eye out for any steals on v4b's and I'm sure I'll pick one up at some point. Just need to find space for all these amps I want.

Check Guitar Center's online used. They have v4s [both reissue ones and vintage] pop up for good $ all the time.

I need help! I have the following signal chain:

Ric->TU-2 -> Verellen Big Spider -> Darkglass Alpha Omega -> EHX Freeze -> Ampeg SVT-CL

And I'm looking for either reverb, chorus, or delay...I just can't figure out which one to pick since I've never had a chance to use one in a doom setting before.

So. With that being said.

What are some of y'all's favorite modulation pedals for doom? Is an afterneath or avalanche run worth a gander, or is it strictly Mr. Black Supermoons and Skreddy Echoes as far as the ears can see?
