For me, live it's much easier saving space and having patches. I go with the zoom ms60b. Easy, sounds great, and won't break the bank. Nothing wrong with all the unique modulation, but it's good not worrying about something growing legs...

For me, none of them is essential, but if I use one, it’s usually delay. My favorites are the Echo Puss and Carbon Copy. Nothing too out there, but good solid delays.
Phaser. I have a Small Stone [fave] but it needs some fixin'. Currently have a cheap chinese phase 90 in its place, which is ok.
anything that has a master volume so you can boost the signal. modulation without a serious volume boost is pretty much useless on bass in a loud band.

i got a washburn bad dog phaser for practically free. same circuit as dod stereo phaser. had to swap a single coupling capacitor because even on guitar it killed the low end, but now it sounds doooooope. adds its own grit and everything

Phaser and chorus are my go-to's. I like reverb and delay a lot when i'm screwing around at home, or my ancient analog univibe. I've started using my MS60b more and setting up small patch chains in it so I can stack a couple effects and use a different patch for a different song.
Does a phaser add texture and/or girth in this context, or is it for the Spacey breakdowns?
The ms60b seems really complicated and I've always felt like I'd rather have pedals that do one thing really well instead of a multi effects pedal. I got rid of my boss gt-6b for that very reason. It may just be intimidating looking, but something about it is just...I don't want to do it!
It seems like a phaser is the next logical step in pedalboard additions, followed by chorus and delay. Any reason nobody recommends reverb?
Also, just bought a Mantic hulk and am interested in what kind of damage I can do with subharmonics as well!
I use mine primarily for slower spacey parts.
I thought the interface would be a pain, but honestly after sending a couple minutes (instead of reading the manual), it was real easy. That and you can change a pedals settings real time without going through menus or anything. I use it just for effects I don't use often. I use a rubberneck for my delay and a dod phaser and crybaby besides it.
It may be cheesy but i love a chorus on bass. The boss ce2 is my favorite. It cuts low end but its ina. Good way that helps the bass pop a little bit to me.
I’d go for reverb before delay. Verb will add thickness to the tone and will let every other effect before it breathe more. I use verb and chorus on my bass board. Phaser is great, but it’s not for me.
My chain is Korg tuner, MXR bass comp, octave fuzz, drive, Russian Bassballs, MXR Micro Chorus, HoF mini, B7KU2. The Bassballs is ran into a Boss LS2 for a clean blend with it. I’d like to add a tap delay and a verb with some type of hold or shimmer function, but other than that, I’m pretty much where I want to be as far as effects. For now anyway lol.

For now, but another overdrive would be nice. Oh and a muff of sorts, oh and an HM, and gotta have a boost. Can't forget about that small stone tucked behind the bookshelf. Wait, then how did I skip over the wah I set next to the board, and the spare preamp w/ di! Can't ever leave the house without that back/spare di. I don't know how anyone can live without synth pedal either. And where's that envelope filter that I just have for when I wanna screw off.
Man pedal boards are too much work! Maybe I should ditch it all and just plug into the amp. But wait, I'd like to add a bit more grit to my sound before the amp. I guess I could use an OD, then a fuzz when I need that, you always need a fuzz...
Hahaha this week's been brutal. Good to get some humor out. Pedal hoarding is dangerous it's like dealing with rabbits...every time you turn around there's another one hiding somewhere, they just multiply I tell ya! I know I got a problem haha.
I have been meaning to put up a modulation post. I have the EHX bass clone chorus and I like it ok but I just use it on our parts that seem a little flat and need something to make the part pop a little bit. In our mix of loud everything I notice a slight thickening but it is so subtle. A chorus with the ability to volume boost would be nice. Any tips on using chorus in loud overdriven mixes? I would like to try a phaser or flanger at some point.

I feel like this is the whole motto of this thread.
That or "would you like dirt with that dirt?" Or "would you like to super fuzz that order?
@xJasonSmithx I like chorus just fine, but I prefer flangers, unless you're using the chorus slow or real fast.
Edit: to clarify, I like flangers because they can cover a similar if not same ground as a chorus, but also much more. I like being able to set the resonance, and I feel like they're more interactive. Don't get me wrong though, I use chorus too.

IF we’re adding flanger to the discussion, it’s my top pick of them all (beside some envelope filter, which hasn’t been mentioned yet...). It’s the only one of those I currently have on my board. Nothing quite like a slow flanger to build up some tension in a song, or a fast one for some different textures.
I really dig this chain! I'm looking to start a real collection (slowly!) ... Though I feel like most of my purchases are impulse buys anyway
The build up is an amazing point! It didn't even occur to me that we could use the filter itself as a tension builder
Yeah flangers are great for that, especially the ones that can somewhat react to how you dig in.
