Hehehe, yeah, tape is nice. It's the perfect thing to record drums and bass. You can run it hot and it will automatically compress well. Since we weren't going to do any of the stuff that is hard on tape with the bass and drum tracks like punching in and out, they were first recorded to tape for the sound it provides, then bounced to digital for the guitar and vocal work. You can get a similar effect with compressor plugins, but we had the tape right there, and renting some wear on a tape was relatively cheap.

And yeah, I agree with bassboysam. Two 57s for the drums, one 57 for the bass, and you'd have a setup easily capable of a nice demo.

I need to pick up some more mic's... I have 1 beta 57 and 2 beta 58's but I need more so I can hopefully get some less shyte recordings of my bands practice/jam sessions. I tried mic'ing up our last practice and its pretty lack luster... but its more down to me not knowing what tf i'm doing, so hopefully I'll have some better luck getting it dialed in as I play with it more.

Mic'ing drums is hard. :|

How are you recording the practice/jam sessions? Multitrack with drums and instruments close mic'd, or just setting up a stereo pair in the room? If it's the latter, I would never ever use Shure 57/58 mics unless I had no other choice.

I'm still new to mic'ing instruments in a studio setting, but I've got a decent amount of knowledge when it comes to recording from more of a distance (like setting up a stereo pair in the room, for example).

Close mics on the 58s on bass/guitar cab, Di mixed in, 57 on the kick, 58 on the vocals (through a PA and a line into the mixer) and a condenser above the cymbals, all this mess going into a mixer and then mixed down to stereo into a 2ch AIO. Getting an interface with more channels is hopefully something that'll happen soon...
recording/mastering/stuff in a daw is pretty out of my wheelhouse so its more to get clean-ish recordings so if we do something cool we can fall back on it, haha.

What is it you find most lacking with the recordings you've made so far?

I always liked my heros or however they're spelled. I'd always lose a pair before wearing em out.


For those that are looking for em, sweetwater's deal is $57 for a 57 and $58 for a 58. Could probably figure out shipping if anyone's interested when June rolls round.

That or I highly recommend making it out if you can. Free camping and entry, just gotta get there and feed yourself.

I'm with lucas303 on this one. Even with an actual drum mic, one almost always needs to put some EQ on kick for a satisfying sound. If you're touching a DAW with the tracks at all, I'd find the EQ plugin. I don't use many plugins in Ardor, but I use the EQ plugins on just about everything I record, even things I record direct with a cab emulator. Stuff I record with a mic always needs some 12 band parametric love, especially something like a loud rock band.

A Beta 57 has the frequency response to get the low sounds ya'd want from the kick, they're just buried -15db or so below a bunch of stuff that you don't really want, at all. Now, if I can advise something if you do start down this path: try cutting stuff with the EQ out before you go boosting things. I usually don't, and get myself close, but then have to go fixing things over and over again to get the track to sit right in the mix, and I'm all over the place with the levels. I'm an idiot. But! I'm usually able to get myself to cut the wrong stuff first these days, and it seems I spend less time tweaking it afterward.

And well, I know a compressor would go a long way, in theory. However, I'm bovine manure with anything other than a 1-knob compressor, even when I'm just noodling with a plugin. So I won't go steering you wrong.

oZZma, Thats awesome. I always have the same feeling when i get on the wagon (i dont smoke) wish i could stay there.
Re: Recording. Ive found that even an inexpensive mic designed for kick drum is superior to the SM57; eq'd or otherwise. The inexpensive kick mic mic will also need some EQ-ing, but still, a better starting place than a non-specific-kick drum mic.

I really, really needed to do it.
I don't know how is that for you, but in the last few months I was so depressed, I had been smoking 5-6 joints in a day. I was never "normal" basically. Totally stoned the whole f...ing day. I have neglected everything. I think I haven't had a shower in 15 days in that period. I could not go on that way, even just going to work had become difficult.

I guess you can record pretty much everything with 57s. Anyways the "beginners guide" I found recommends the AKG D112 for low stuff such as bass and kickdrum, while says 57s are great for snares, toms and guitar...
If you still had to buy all the mics, would you go for 57s or these AKGs (for bass and kick)?
I had made a list in case we want to record with the Glyn Johns method

2*AKG PERCEPTION 170 (overheads)
2* Shure SM57 (one for the snares, one for the guiitar amp)
2* AKG D112 (one for the bass cab and one for the kickdrum)

Is that a good setup?

I just had two days with no ethanol due to stomach issues. I had two beers tonight, but I wanted them, they tasted good and I feel fine. I do wish I could kick cigarettes without feeling like I would just feel better if I stabbed everyone in Texas just once.

I smoke weed when I get up, then quit for 9 hours or so at work, then smoke a bit on my way home and when I am home. My wife says it doesn't change my behavior, but she could do without the odor.

Really, I do know I can quit alcohol and weed when I want to. The only time I get irritable is when I'm quitting weed for a job search, and that's because I think about the dumb reason I can't have weed when I get an urge. If I was quitting it because I wanted to (like when I quit for a few weeks to get it to actually be an intense experience when I start up again) - I'm fine, if not as interested in cartoons.

But that cigarette thing, aslkfjaefoiawnoea;weoif;aoweifna;weoia;fia;oeifna;eifa;efi;aoefina. Gotta figure out how to work that one out.
