Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

On a totally different note, I'm kinda curious if I could get some of yalls thoughts on this track:

I just made a fairly quick scratch track for the bassline on this (not my recording of the drums/guitar...) and curious on how its sitting with everything tone wise, and all that crap. I have a clean version too, but my bandmates like this version more, ha. I haven't eq'd anything or played with it at all so it def has a long way it can go.

I enjoyed it a lot, reminds me of some bands i listened to a lot for a big chunk of the last 6 years.

My first show ever was ZZ Top in like 91 maybe? (My dad took me)

Since then I've seen some pretty loud bands (HoF, EW, etc) but none has come close to ZZ Top loud.

Oh, hey there Stoner/Doomers! My life took a nosedive in October that led to another TB hiatus. Long story short, divorce is imminent, I'm moving away from a toxic personality in my life, and I'll be in a really good place come May. For now, I can confidently say that I am okay.

Funeral Mask is going strong! We have been tracking tunes at my guitarist's house. He has Logic and recently buckled down and become proficient really quickly! With how massive the guitars sound, we are considering adding another guitarist. Here's a rough mix w/ no vocals.



For earplugs, have you tried the mid-priced non-customs? I was thinking about making the jump from foamies to customs, but it was $$$. I like the Heros Hifi (~$20) and the Dubs (~$50). Both work really well. They don't cut as many DBs as foam, but I think they are quite comfy and sound much more even.

Gross Pro-Tip: I get a better seal if I wet the earplug first, usually w/ saliva since it is readily available. It's like administering a wet-Willie to oneself.

In gear news, I picked up a old Yamaha EM-80 tube mixer w/ a spring reverb. In a few interviews, Tim Lefebvre said he uses to record including Bowie's Black Star album. It sounds great, it's small, and it is light... I'm digging it through Mesa 15's as poor man's B15/around the house amp. It has 4 inputs, so it is also really handy for multiple instruments.

Damn, Thats a whole lotta changes... I hope stuff comes out looking good for ya. There is a very high likely hood that my partner and I be separating at some point, but we're still trying to work through some stuff still. It still sucks to deal with even when it comes out to be a more positive change.

Life can be full of but the Funeral Mask track is awesome! Looking forward to hear more stuff, very much my cup of tea. Seems quite on the weird, psychedelic side of noise rock.

I remember King Crimson coming up maybe a month or two back in this thread. Anyway, I listened to 'Discipline' a ton in high school, largely because I saw Claypool do Thela Hun Ginjeet live with his solo band. For some reason I never dove further, despite my Pop's insistence that I do so. Anyway, I decided to pop on "Red" today at work, and it pretty much sucked me into a vortex. I've been on a real heavy kick the last 2-3 years (heavier than usual), but it's been intertwined with some more progressive, riffy, and eclectic stuff. Just needed something new today that kind of tied into all that, and Red ended up being the perfect, random choice.

This sh*t is blowing my mind and now I'm pumped to start absorbing the rest of their catalog. Aside from a few well known tunes and Discipline as a whole, this will be a glorious new ride...

Sure they are better, but they are way more expensive as well... We'll have to stick to "entry level decent stuff", buying PRO level mics is not worth it for our level of skill

I was literally doing searches on bandcamp earlier today for "prog doom."

I have a delicate relationship with prog. Some of it is just far too corny for my taste, or gets too deep into the technical side while seeming to forget about the musical side. The stuff I like, though, I REALLY like. If you've got anything to recommend, I'm all ears.

I have a delicate relationship with prog. Some of it is just far too corny for my taste, or gets too deep into the technical side while seeming to forget about the musical side. The stuff I like, though, I REALLY like. If you've got anything to recommend, I'm all ears.

So my ideal mash-up of heavy/progressive is Elder, which I'm assuming you're familiar with? If not, go now and enjoy the next 5-6 hours of your life. Likewise, I'm in the same boat with some proggy stuff being a bit over the top for my liking. I can't always qualify it, but there is some line in my mind that certain "prog rock" crosses. Anyway...

I've been on a big Motorpsycho kick lately. If you aren't familiar, they're from Norway and have been around since late 80s/early 90s. They are pretty damn eclectic from album to album and within certain albums. The co-founding members (bassist and guitarist) kinda grew up on prog rock, metal, and all sorts of interesting stuff. They are not afraid to take chances or try something new on an album. Hard to say where to start, but some ones I dig are The Tower, Heavy Metal Fruit, Behind The Sun, Trust Us, Demon Box, and Little Lucid Moments. They've got probably 20-25 albums. If you listen to a few tracks and dig it, I highly recommend this documentary.

The current lineup kills live too. Saw them about 2 years ago. Mindblowing.

If you dig Red, Starless and Bible Black & Larks Tongue are similarly situated band and sound-wise. I love all their stuff though.

All three will now be in regular rotation, as well as discipline. Also dug THRAK, and am listening to Vrooom Vrooom - the double live set from their 95-96 tour. This live compilation is insanely good!

Apropos of nothing, I'm really digging the sound of clean bass tones in metal lately (or at least what sounds like a clean tone in the mix). Probably everything I'm hearing as clean still has some amount of dirt to it, and almost certainly has the mids cranked.

I'm a page or 2 late but you absolutely can use sm57s to record everything and I'd recommend more people try the GLS knockoffs they sound fantastic and don't set you back a ton. Hell a cheapo Behringer 1820 or the Tascam/zoom equivalent and another 8 mic in pre you can get a pretty solid recording start to do live tracking for sub $1000 not counting PC/laptop.

I too am thinking about better plugs, I use cheapo construction site style foam ones and they are fine for practice, as the bass is there but its really hard vocal-wise as the plugs cut the frequencies my vocals live in

That's what always threw me off with the foam ones. Figuring out stage mix was always a nightmare.

I've only tried the etymotic ones that had a couple different filters and we're similar to heros HiFi. The heros we're way more comfortable to me. Thought about trying others but idk.

I suggest starting with Black Sabbath, Cream, and Led Zeppelin. Doom is rooted in the tropes of these bands that you will get really acquainted with how things sound in relation to the fingerboard and tabs/books of their music are easy to find. This will open the door for figuring out doom songs by ear... Figuring out some punk or hardcore songs wouldn't hurt either.

It sounds cheesy, but the Wikipedia page for doom is a good starting spot, especially because the genre is so broad. It is definitely curated by some nerds in the know. Also, start hanging around this page and you will get exposed to a lot of stuff (eg, nice Elder post yesterday, I hadn't listened to them in a minute!).

There’s Sabbath tabs aplenty out there, and you could do a lot worse.
