Not to derail the thread too much (oh who am I kidding, that seems to be all I do around here) but I've been getting near the end of my rope with the Denver metro area for a little while now. I'm not going to put that on anyone other than me. I see myself either moving to somewhere like Bailey, or out of state entirely, before too long. That'll be one less transplant for the "natives" to worry about (those "native" bumper stickers...ugh).

Totally man. I cant agree more. I'm out of here in the next two years for sure. Bailey is too cold and too redneck for me but I get the appeal.
To keep it on topic, the Denver heavy music scene seems to be thriving in terms of quality of music coming out of here. Though I've noticed a pretty dramatic drop in show attendance for the underground stuff lately. Used to be a good band could get a crowd any night of the week... hard to say whats causing the decrease?

As someone who goes to a decent amount of shows, I'm curious if there are any particular local bands you think aren't getting as much attention as they should? I'm particularly interested in whether there are some good local bands I've overlooked.
Speaking only for myself, in some instances if I've seen a local band several times before and they've played the same set every time, and if I anticipate I won't have to wait too long to see them again, I'll be more inclined to skip one of their shows. I'm also not a big fan of one of the venues that hosts some of the metal shows, but I'm not sure how much something like that plays into it for other people (most people are not opinionated pricks like I am...thankfully).
I'd also be curious about the time frame you're talking about. Because if it's just the last few months I'd imagine the holidays would play into attendance. There's so many factors that come into play. For those of you who are in bands that regularly play shows, how do you view it when one of your shows isn't as well-attended as you expected?

I was actually referring more to bands coming through town and not getting a lot of support. It used to be that I could tell a band that if they came through Denver, and played Hi-Dive or Larimer/Lost Lake on a Tuesday, that they'd have a good crowd, that the local metal heads come out. I was pretty proud of that. Now-a-days, it's hit or miss; I can't make that promise anymore. I think the time frame in which I've seen a noticeable decline is the last 18 months.
I'm sadly not able to attend many locals shows unless I'm playing them, which is rare. I totally think its fine to skip a locals show if they're playing frequently, but with the way Denver is growing, I would expect there to be enough people to keep the venues full. I usually see Denver bands when they are supporting touring acts these days. The more "national" acts that we have here, based in Denver, seem like they still draw pretty well, though there was one show recently that I was little surprised by. Blood Incantation is killing it, for instance.
Yeah, I'm being affected by Neil Peart's death more than I would have expected. I guess I'm still a 12 year old Rush fan deep down inside.

I've honestly never answered an ad for a band. I've always had somebody wanting to start another band that I already knew and got along with. People really ask questions like that? Seems to be counter-productive. If nothing else, I've been in good bands with folks I didn't particularly like. Heck, I've lobbied to keep some of them in the band when the rest of the members wanted to ditch them. They actually added to the sound, even if they were sometimes hard to get along with.
Re: Natives. Texas was kind of like that back in the '80s. Bunch of silly "Native Texan" bumper stickers, etc. There's so many people here from out of state now, I think the natives are now out numbered. So, if it keeps going maybe the natives will realize they're in the minority and shut up.

Yes, kind of. The band moved here.from Peoria Illinois... Home of mudvayne... Haha. . Planes definitely made their name here in Denver. Great band. I loved them too. Played with them and red fang at a showcase here a few years ago.
I generally dislike when you are introduced to someone and they immediatly ask you what you do for a living as if it "tipified" you as a person.
But my bandmate is a shift worker and now I can see how it can be relevant in a band context. Scheduling stuff is a true PITA with shifts.

Another example, once I had a talk with a guy who was "looking for another band because his current bandmates wanted to go on tours but he can't leave his business for long (he had a shop)"
So...
When you see this kind of "obstacles" you need to understand how keen to "sacrifice" the person is. You probably need some "extra" commitment to not give up the band schedule, in certain conditions.

I've been too SH1TBALLZ busy to join in here much lately, but kinda wanna bounce this off youse chowderheads and see what you think....instead of posting over in TB band management, etc. because it sucks over there.
Been playing with a surf-y trio and during the past month or so I've been either getting bored or just more irritated by either one or both of the other dudes. Guitar guy sends me unsolicited emails that are a mix of pontification, music theory homework or they read straight up like "am I cool? do you like me?" Or he emails me behind the drummer guy's back about firing him or what he said/she said kind of stuff. I received another one right after a rehearsal the other day where I was dead tired and for the first time felt like I didn't want to be there. It's like, dude, leave me alone. What really got to me is the text guitar guy sends exactly as I'm pulling up to rehearsal I'm gonna be late. Fcuk you, dude. Then the first note isn't played until 30-40 min. later because these two wanna have social hour and not rehearse.
These 2 guys are just as sweet as can be, so it's probably me? Both are excellent players, the guitar player's tone kind of blows though. The music is well done but basically vanilla flavored 'meh' to me lately, and after 5-6 months, we should be playing gigs, we're more than ready. Instead, guitar guy wants to add an elusive 4th member, and has constantly re-arranged song structures until drummer guy told him to knock that sh1t off, which I agreed with.
I've been working on my own stuff again and I feel like that's where I'd rather put my focus. I rarely quit bands, so this is not an easy decision to make.

6 months and nothing to really show in terms of playing live or recording, chances are neither will ever happen. if you're cool with just the social aspect of it then why not? otherwise, time to jet and find more like-minded people.
