Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

ESP made that Viper (?) thing that was like an off-set EB shape. I'm guessing neck dive drives some people away, along with fear of the mudbuck. I had an SB450 that looked cool, played cool, sounded cool, but sucked with a strap. I tolerate my T-bird with the EGC neck--dive--from--hell just because it's a bespoke flashy showpiece, it's alright as a bass, nothing more.

Also, A BIG F.U. TO MY LANDLORD WHO IS KICKING ME AND MY PREGNANT WIFE OUT RIGHT WHEN SHE'S DUE. SERIOUSLY LANDLORD, GET F-ED.
Proceed to have the birth in his office.

^^Couldn't have said it better.

Rough dude that's brutal.

I've wondered the same about Gibson basses. I like em, just never put the money down for one. I think it may have some to do with the changes to current models end up being detrimental to sales and they squander?

I've had 2 Beta Bass heads. They are deceptively loud amps, and you really need the original footswitch or one from Koolkat to use them to their full potential. I found that they're more mids or upper mids focused.....the low end response on them is weak, I would have to dime the lows to get anything approaching pant leg flapping territory with 15's. The overdrive is ok but I've heard better from other SS amps. They're usually overpriced (I think we all know this).

I've been told that Hilbish can modify the bass EQ on his version to be better than the Sunn.

Yeah, I'd plan on a Hilbish over a vintage. He has mentioned he can increase the gain range of the bass EQ.

I used the Sunn Beta Bass with original footswitch for awhile and my takeaways are the exact same as yours. One thing I DIDN'T like is as far as I can tell there basically isn't a DI out and I feel like you lose a lot of lows by not having some kind of DI. I personally despise the sound of a clean blended DI live and always use either my own preamp or the DI out on my amp I refuse to let people throw a DI box and clean blend on the front of my chain unless its in a studio though but you DO need some kind of DI unless you're very loud for the room. Personal preference but I played a show once where me and another bassist used my Sunn and the 3rd guy used his G&K RB and the RB had far more crushing lows in the mix because of the DI which I could noticeably tell in the crowd.

I feel like I should clarify the reason why I don't like having a completely clean DI live is because I feel like a lot of sound engineers are lazy and I've been to plenty of shows where I could tell I was only hearing the clean DI or they had the MIC'd signal so low it was barely noticeable only as some mild coloration. I feel like when they do that it can make the tone sound samey and a bit generic. I spent a lot of time and years finding my sound and that's what I want people to hear FOH. Good luck on your journey and tell us how awesome the Hillbish is when you get it!!!

I'm not saying you should do anything bad....

NOW, a big Whaaa deeee Foook to our landlord, as they came to their f'ing senses and are not kicking us out anymore.

Worst f'ing 10 days we've had in a long long time. I need a beer.
Glad to hear that. Hopefully the rollercoaster ride is over. If you want to head over to Michigan, the band fridge is full of beer and I have a nice bottle of Buffalo Trace...

My band released a second single from our upcoming March 20th release for those who are interested. Bass on this one was an MTD KZ4 with Nordstrand big singles + an EMG pre into an Earthquaker Warden into a Tech 21 YYZ Direct. Guitars were a mesa dual rec & an ampeg SS140 boosted w/ a gated metalzone. Not sure which guitars were used but our guitarist is obsessed with 80s and 90s BC Rich so probably several of those with EMGs.
