Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Mithrandir Fuzz rocked practice last night. Its certainly in the superfuzz camp though more 'synthy' in the mids. Guitarist thought it was fatter sounding.

There's a few little wrinkles. First, the Bass knob when cranked actually cut a little bass, I suppose that it was the interaction with the blend knob. Blend is pretty touchy, at least on bass. I found running the pedal really hot and the blend mostly 'clean' yielded the best sound for me, one close to my superfuzz/line selector tone, but yep more synthy sustainy mids.

Because there's sooo much gain on tap, the clean blend from 0 to about 30% has noticable blended signal, after that it just sounds like adding more fuzz/gain.

The Octave control can get really nuts. The right footswitch turns it on/off. I found if I leave in engaged but turn the octave to 0 that I liked the tone the best. It is considerable darker without the octave engaged.

Once I figured out the eccentricities of it, it is definitely a keeper!

Someone here plays the Hilbish.... can't remember who tho. I'm sure they'll be along shortly.

The Blackhawk Mithrandir killed last night. Left the new [to me] Gibbo at home last night, the 'case' it came with is garbage, didn't want anything to happen to it in a crowded bar. With the tuners angled back it doesn't fit in any old case, though I'm told it fits in an Epi EB-3 case.

I've had 2 Beta Bass heads. They are deceptively loud amps, and you really need the original footswitch or one from Koolkat to use them to their full potential. I found that they're more mids or upper mids focused.....the low end response on them is weak, I would have to dime the lows to get anything approaching pant leg flapping territory with 15's. The overdrive is ok but I've heard better from other SS amps. They're usually overpriced (I think we all know this).

I've been told that Hilbish can modify the bass EQ on his version to be better than the Sunn.

ESP made that Viper (?) thing that was like an off-set EB shape. I'm guessing neck dive drives some people away, along with fear of the mudbuck. I had an SB450 that looked cool, played cool, sounded cool, but sucked with a strap. I tolerate my T-bird with the EGC neck--dive--from--hell just because it's a bespoke flashy showpiece, it's alright as a bass, nothing more.

Also, A BIG F.U. TO MY LANDLORD WHO IS KICKING ME AND MY PREGNANT WIFE OUT RIGHT WHEN SHE'S DUE. SERIOUSLY LANDLORD, GET F-ED.
