Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Fair enough, I enjoyed their first album a ton. The new one is a bit underwhelming. Any recent Stoner/Doom releases you recommend?

recent? not really. the whole scene has been stagnant for a while. they all seem to just rehash the same old riffs and sounds. there were a couple that caught my attention but i can't think of what they were, probably a sign that they weren't that good.

now get off my lawn.

If I can butt in here...

Some 2020 releases that I've enjoyed, and may or may not fall in the stoner/doom category (I've never been great with all the labels):
Drown "Subaqueous"
Grim Ravine "It's a Long Way Down, to Where You Are"
Insect Ark "The Vanishing"
Khemmis "Doomed Heavy Metal"

And based on the one track released so far and their prior stuff, I'd say the upcoming In the Company of Serpents is as safe a bet as you can get.

I dig the couple tracks I've heard off the new King Buffalo album. Nice to sit back and listen to some here n there.

I think I'm gonna keep the amp raw, it's got some funk gunk stank on it and it's held together fine so far.

@Grahams Groove I think ya nailed it about vocals for me.

I never knew that, I'll have to try it when I get time to crank it up.

My bass just has a Tbird pup at the neck, can't imagine how much beef a mudbucker has there. Mine absolutely roars and it's only like 9.6ohm with alnico's.

Got the amp mostly finished, just need to tweak one corner so it'll flip out without rubbing anything.

Mudbuckers are hefty. 30k. No joke! The HPF lets it be itself without vibrating all nearby walls into dust. Haha.

It still distorts the preamp on my GK but I run the 'boost' [kinda sorta a gain control] up about at 6 anyway. Besides I like it mean sounding. Though if I back off the bass's vol knob and play with a light touch, it'll do thick and clean.

I'd imagine with a modern beefy 800w class D amp, with the HPF, it could probably do clean louder.

EDIT: and that peavey looks beautiful in the new boxes!

Love the natural finish!! It looks really cohesive! I'm a sucker for black to be quite honest, but amps and cabs look better with some characteristic colours to really make an impression. At the very least, something other than white on black. You can't work the aesthetics with the shape in the same way as you can with a bass since gigantic boxes need to be more convenient to transport and acoustically functional. So colour it is, I guess.

In other news, Elephant Tree released their third album today! I've been loving their self-titled release a lot and this one's great too. Faceless is my fave track so far! They're gonna do a livestream today at 8:30 PM BST / 3:30 PM EST. That should be in about 1.5 hours from this post. I'll try to be there :)
