I so want to be in a Earth Crisis tribute band. I've probably mentioned that here before but, yeah, your post reminded me.
Yeah, I pretty much only listen through Gomorrah's Season Ends. I do think To the Death is pretty damn good though (and I have to confess I haven't gotten around to the more recent albums yet).

Not really doom related but definitely metal, I’m taking an even off from everything to sit and revisit Megadeth’s Rust In Peace. Still holds up. Eddie Van Halen can eat Marty Friedman’s ass, this is the best rock guitar record ever recorded. And you can hear the bass through the whole thing. Just awesome.

I dislike guitar wankery. Strongly. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean it sounds good or works. I actually dislike a few “big” bands for their usage of what I see to be unnecessary types of wankery, often trying to weave together various incoherent styles and whatnot into a single song. Some call it “progressive” or somesuch (there are progressive bands I enjoy, but they are able to coherently write a piece) but I just don’t like it.
Rust In Peace is phenomenal.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Tom Scholz the bassist? The man who made the Rockman practice amp/headphone thing? Seems he’d know good tone and whatnot. I have no opinion on Boston one way or the other, except to say that I love Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Carl loves Boston.
He played bass and guitar, wrote the songs, built the studio, built some of the effects... Genius.
Clearly, my knowledge of Boston is limited. And as is far too often, the “bassist” is key to the band and yet relatively unknown. Seems he did far more than play bass, as do many of us.
While you are super duper wrong, Boston has some really thoughtful, musical guitar work on it. It’s no Frampton Comes Alive, but still. Respect.
