Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Everything is fsked and isht sucks, but I have better anti depressants and we're recording in a week, so we got that going I guess. Super stoked about recording, not so stoked about having to do some vocals, mostly nerves though...
+1 for meds, been a lifesaver for me.

Trying to get the guys to get something properly recorded. Would love to at least have a solid sounding demo of a few tracks to link up to bandcamp or whatever. A lot easier to keep the flame alive when theres music for people to check out.

Not going to be booking a tour anytime soon, not that I'd be able to leave work for weeks at a time anyway, covid or no covid.

So we're hoping that there will be local gigs of some type in the near-ish future. One can dream!

What's the matter with you vs pedals?
I have never learned to use them.
I have written a whole album material and I think I use a fuzz like three times in total. I believe it's the result of writing without pedals… once I think about a whole song structure in a certain way, any time I tried to "add" effects, it sounded contrived to me. I did wrong the whole process I fear…
Now I wish songs were more varied and dynamic soundwise. I own a few pedals I "wanted" to use (a very cool Boss delay with a $*itload of options, a few distortions…), but the sound change between switched on/off feels always stupid, so I give up… I believe its also due to the fact that there is no other guitar or other instrument (not even a singer) in my band so everytime I switch something on/off the discontinuity seems weird. It's like switching on/off the whole band. I don't know if you know what I mean. That's why I basically have an "always on" kind of setup and the only thing I occasionally switch on/off is the Pitchfork… I'm not happy with that, but it's basically how things happened. I would want to overcome this limitation I have… 'cause I feel it's a limitation in the writing. But I really couldn't get along well with any effect yet :atoz:

I never trusted medications, a few friends from the past were ruined by them, but I'm almost taking them into consideration now… I had to quit both smoking and drinking cause I had health problems, kind of reached a point of no return with that. And now anytime depression is triggered, I can't even smoke a cigarette to calm down a little. And unfortunately I really can't afford to feel like that at work now that my job has become uncertain and my assignment is renewed week by week. I really need to seem/act normal now. But I'm still scared enough of meds. :atoz: Dunno.

Diagnosis has come a long way in mental health. There are verifiable methods to finding appropriate medications instead of the olden "try them all one at a time until one works" method. I've also done therapy in the past too. No shame in getting some help if you need it.

I mean I see it the same way as my chronic acid reflux. I don't want acid reflux everyday, so I am careful about what I eat and I take my Rx meds twice a day. But I get it, there's still a stigma with mental health. No one is going to chastise me for taking acid reflux neds like they possibly might for my anxiety meds. . .

pretty much this, I self medicated for a decade with alcohol and weed to get similar serotonin boosts, I'd say it's slightly better managed right now and I'm a bit more functional. Been on em for 3yrs now after a mental health breakdown that lead to time off work and some hospitalisation. Stuff still isn't great, but it's helped sort of keep things more manageable rather than to spiral out of control with my depression.

I'm still hella pumped for recording. I've been messing around with my recording setup in our studio and getting some pretty cool results so I'm stoked to be able to do it with someone who knows what they're doing

I highly recommend 'Genesight' testing. It's a cheek swab genetic lab test. It looks at your body's receptors, metabolization speed etc to help pinpoint better medicines to try.

It did cost us some out of pocket, but my wife went thru years of taking ineffectual medications. Turns out she naturally metabolizes medications quickly, so they can switch her to a faster metabolizing med at a lower dose to greater effect. They were upping meds before that so she saw no benefit because her body passed most of the med before it could get in her bloodstream.

I think I do. You explain it all quite clearly.

Not sure if I got this right: is your band just drums and bass?
Yeah exactly. I can't even sing… So you know, if I switch any pedal ON, really any pedal, most often the difference between the two parts goes far beyond my intentions. Seems literally like you're listening to one guy trying a pedals at Guitar Center. Meh.
At least, this is how I perceive it.

I'm no pedal expert, but maybe if you run parallel signal paths you can run the different effects on just one and then you've always got the other signal staying consistent to tie the room together...?

This covid thing is starting to really get to me. Our doom band practiced 3 weeks ago for the first time since February. It was awesome. I don’t even care about gigging right now I just want to jam sometimes.

Then one of our drummer’s co-workers tests positive for covid ....so yeah practice is done again already for a while. Man o man.

Can your drummer get tested and then if he/she is clear you can get back to jamming? The tests are only a matter of days for turnaround time, right?

That would be a solution probably... If I find a cheap way I could try it, 'cause the time I could afford to buy gear is over...

@rutrho I "self medicated" too. Too bad medication became an illness itself.
BTW thanks for sharing your experiences... I'm thinking about it. I don't really care for the stigma, believe me. I don't even have a social life so there is no one to judge me. My bias on madications is surely based on outdated methods, I'm talking about stuff that happened 20 years ago...

@oZZma
I know I’m dropping into the middle of a convo, but I figured I’d at least jump feet first back into the group after a few month hiatus.

I run a guitar combo for my dirty signal and my dry path is my normal GK rig. If there was something like that you could try, it might be worth looking into. Another thing might be to run a Boss Line Selector with pedals through one side and the other side put a patch cable from out to in for dry. This would create separate, volume controllable signal paths to a single amp. I’m sure splitters with volume controls are made, but I’ve never researched them.

I recently found out, through genetic testing, that the heavy dose of ssri prescribed to me for nearly a decade was actually making me worse than better. I went though the testing after weening myself off the ssri, and found there was only one that would work with my genetic makeup. Typically there are 8-10 minimum. So, I’ve been on this new med for about a month. I feel better. I can say those words with true honesty and not just some bs answer I’d give when people ask how I’m doing. I have been in social work for a while and see medications impact people vastly different. I believe I know where you’re coming from with the aversion. The testing is 100% worth it in my opinion. I’m living proof of at least one benefit to it.

Yeah but you have to wait a full two weeks for symptoms to potentially show themselves. Also i’m not sure if he has to continue to work and what the policy is there if somebody tests positive? It’s a can of worms.

Basically if you know somebody potentiality exposed you need to distance yourself from them. And if they can’t distance themselves from it you have to continue to distance.

So we will see.

Wish I had more time to brush up on chops...but the kiddos are worth it.

In other news I got confirmation that my amp is built and ready to ship, but due to covid problems they have to send it with a distributor order so 5 weeks. Can't wait!

@eyeballkid you had a BTA at one point right? How's it compare to the ABM Evo heads, if you had one of those?
The BTA is just what you would hope a tube ABM would sound like. Its glorious. I regret selling mine.

I had similar experiences, minus the weed as I just really never enjoyed the buzz from it. The right meds and a couple years of quality therapy sessions really turned my sh%t around. Good thing too, as I have no idea how I'd manage to cope with 2020 otherwise. I'd probably be in prison or dead of alcohol poisoning.

2020 makes a convincing case for alcohol poisoning. Not that I think it’s a good idea, but 2020 sucks and I love my cheap beer. Living the High Life tonight, in fact.

Ooof, kinda deep subjects. I kinda like it.

@oZZma : Oh, I think I get what your situation is. You're the entire band as far as sustained pitch goes. If you step on a pedal, it's like a different band is accompanying the drummer. Sometimes you might want that, but it's going to sound abrupt. Yeah, I'd advise trying to split the signal, possibly into separate clean/effects signals, so any changes would be less abrupt with the original signal still being present. But it seems you could put effects on the "clean" signal as well. As long as you were careful in where you would turn on specific effects, and only add effects on both channels gradually, adding them over time.

Also, especially with time based effects like delay, you kind of have to write the part with the effect on. This is true of other effects, too. I might put fuzz on a bass or guitar part that I had originally written for an overdriven sound, but it's not what I normally do. When you add certain effects to an instrument, especially heavily, it becomes a different sounding instrument. You can switch the instrument that a part is assigned to, but you have to be judicious. For example, you can have the piccolos do the bassoon parts, but it's gotta still be somehow appropriate for the piccolos to do it. I feel adding effects after the fact is a similar action. Making changes like that should be made out of necessity, because you feel the song is missing something, not just because you have to use a pedal.

And well, don't feel like you have to use effects just because you have them. I have a pedal board with 7 pedals. About half the shows with the current band I use two of them (a fuzz and a tuner(and the latter doesn't really count as a "pedal")). Other shows I might use 5 or all 7 depending on what the set is. Depending on the set list, I might just use the tuner. It's happened.

In the world of vocals, mental health, etc.:

@rutrho : On the vocals, just relax and enjoy yourself as much as you can. There's always another take, after all, and as long as you're not working with a crazy person who's tracking vocals directly to tape, they can merge the best of your takes together.

Otherwise, when my doctor asks if I've been depressed, I explain that I think I might be pathologically happy. I might be sad and cry occasionally, but it's about stuff like the fact my parents are dead, and nothing's going to change that and bring them back for another conversation. I don't know what you can do about that other than cry if it bothers you. So, that's what I do.

On things I can change, I'm probably moronically hopeful. I feed myself with tech support for an email appliance. You're a fscktard who can't figure out how to fix your problem and you're yelling at me while I'm trying to tell you precisely how to fix it? Yeah, it's stressful to be interrupted mid-sentence repeatedly, but I'm happy to try to jump into the breach and try again. Sometimes I do actually get worn down and we close the ticket in frustration, but that takes weeks, and your dumb ass is going to give up before I do.

Hmm, medication. I would probably sleep 18 hours a day like a cat without thyroid supplements. Other than that, I do keep my mind...umm, limber with the amount of mind altering chemicals that I seem to crave at the moment. I can't say I recommend the behavior, but it seems to work for me. I'd probably prefer less ethanol at this point in my life, and do work to control my intake of it. With nowhere to drive to these days, it's too easy to pour it down and regret its physical effects later. So, I rarely buy whiskey anymore, and try to count the beers by their abv.

Nicotine is probably my most vigorously abused self-medication. If I could kick that bastard without feeling like I need to stab all 47,000,000 or so residents of Texas just a teeny bit, I'd do it. I'll probably get the gumption soon, it seems to get closer every day.

When it comes to antidepressants, I can't comment intelligently. My wife takes them, and they seem to work for her. They seem to be powerful chemicals, though. If you're taking them, be careful.

I already do that two amps thing… I basically have a bass amp for the clean bass sound, and a guitar amp for the fuzziness. The guitar amp only has one channel so it's always distorted.

But I would have wanted to alter the sound of the bass amp now and then… only couldn't find a way that sounds right to me, yet. Really wanted to use the ring mod in a point in one song, for example. Jeezuz. Even blended (that pedal has a blend) it sucks. Not sure if it's an objective problem or a bug in my brain.

Yes, that's exactly my problem. You explained in 10 words better than me in 500. I'm so tired these days I can't even think properly.

Yeah basically I think that is the only thing I can still try, as other suggested...

@oZZma in terms of effects, you have to think of them as part of the instrument and creative process. don't think of them as something to add after.

Yeah I totally agree with you, guys… That's why I think I did the whole process wrong.

There's only a few parts that sound like they would need to be thicker, or modulated, or distorted. But most of the stuff, it sounds just wrong with a different sound.

Oh BTW I have the same "awkwardness" with synths. In some points I wanted to add a droning sound or something like that 'cause I feel in that point the song would need it, but the fact that I would have another instrument playing ONLY in that point always felt weird. All attempts I did felt so contrived, I discarded them. This is so frustrating. I think I have "arranged" songs like a caveman would have, and relisten and think it's dumb and I would almost want to flush everything down the toilet 'cause in any case it's too late to rethink everything from scratch.
