Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

No experience with Eden besides trying a few at stores way back. Heard great things and I'm always all for combos of that style. Love my Mesa 212 combo. The extra weight of the head isn't noticable IMO and with some casters on that sucker it should move easy. Since none of my heads are small it saves me a trip.

In other news, with some spare time I finally delved into some death metal. I knew of a few bands like napalm death and have played shows with local ones, but never really spent time listening. Anyway, the older Swedish stuff like Entombed is great! Toxic holocaust (American right?) is good too, never realized there was a lot of groove oriented parts instead of just thrash and blast beats the whole time. Glad I spent the time, nice to mix things up at times.
Try out an Dismember yet? It's similar in style to Entombed, but they'll throw in Iron Maiden-esque dual guitar parts as well. And I always considered Toxic Holocaust thrash, though it doesn't really matter. Lots of crossover these days. One of my favorite death metal bands (Vader)is basically just thrash with harsher vocals and more gain and they're awesome.

I thought the same about toxic, infact I always thought napalm was thrash or grindcore when I was growing up. Honestly outside of the more melodic sounds in the swedish veins and the lyrical topic, I have yet to totally understand the difference between death and black metal, and all the ones that crossover with those two.

Was always a fan of old punk, hardcore and thrash growing up. Graveworm were the only ones on the death/black spectrum I knew of and granted the only Graveworm song I really knew was the cover of losing my religion.

Edit: I've heard of Vader and thrash is something I've always liked. I'll add em to the list, mostly been listening on pandora/youtube.

Never listened to much Napalm Death. All I know is that they were grindcore back in the day, but they quickly lost all of their original members. Pretty sure everyone from the original lineup was gone over 30 years ago. Not really sure what they sound like these days.

The similarities between death/black metal are not coincidental. They both have heavy influences from thrash. Depending on who you ask/believe, they are both offshoots of German thrash, actually, with Kreator being cited as the genesis of early death metal styles and Sodom being credited for black metal. Of course, other bands were heavily influential as well, but you get the point. I could go on for days on this stuff, but I'll stop for everyone's sake.

Lotta baxandall love here too! That's sweet, how'd it sound? Did it change the breakup at all? I've been thinking about trying to wire up an on board preamp with one.

I've used this in two basses and it's great, although if you're using the Japanese fets it is imperative that you use the 2sk117Y. absolutely will not work with the other 2sk117 (originally i had 2sk117bl so this is how i know). the 2n version i made was SUPER LOUD but it could've been my error. eventually shorted in something (apparently wrapping in cling wrap is not proper insulation when allowing to float inside a shielded cavity)

bax after rat certainly gives some more tone possibilities, especially since it's boost and cut. i try to have no more than three knobs unless it's a delay or synth or something) so there's no volume control and it's a pretty LOUD pedal
i made a fuzz with a bax tone stack BEFORE the clipping stage. was an absolute bear getting the right frequencies beforehand and weird to dial in but had some interesting sounds (cut bass, tighter sound. crank bass, woolier muffled sound. treble control is controlling which frequencies are ultimately clipped and have harmonics generated from them instead of just reducing the sound of those harmonics after clipping). don't know if i could ever settle on producing just a couple pedals because experimenting with one offs is so fun

@kleinenenten thanks, appreciate it. Mostly only read up on the swedish/norwegian scene, can definitely see where german thrash started it. I'd definitely say I'm a nerd for history.

Doom's been around longer hasn't it? I saw a lot of parallels in the slower passeges.

That's great to know, thanks. I feel ya on limiting knobs, always been a fan of KISS. EQ before clipping stages is cool, I've had little experience with it. Cool how increasing bass can make it clip more kinda like setting off a compressor with too much lows. I've only just begun to understand electronics for audio, but it's cool to understand how these things affect everything.

That oracle looks like a great piece of gear, wish I had the cash to spare.

The trace v4 head is pretty clean, almost pedal platform-esq. I used that as guide for when the output on the oracle is too hot for it, and then I blend the dirt/input between the oracle and trace preamps. But when I got straight into the fx return of the trace, I'm bypassing the trace preamp. It works great and has made my other fender tone stack amps wayyyy more versatile without having to replace them of sorts.

That's a great point, I really dig how it's a simple interface but can still tweak the daylights out of it.

On another front, I think I floated it out before but anyone have experience with the ibanez super metal? Need to try some more HM2 & rat clones as well, thanks all for the lists way back on those.

Got 4 pedals to throw on the cutting board, maybe 5 and definitely want to try some more different dirt. Been on a binge lately.

For those into weird, highly recommend the Keeley Synth-1. Can do sub fuzz slow gear filter to octave up fuzz to all manner of glitchy. Way better tracking on guitar, but it's a lot of fun and the slow gear works on dry only too. Wicked fun.

@br1qbat, dude good look Unleashed is great too. I dig it. Thanks everyone else too, started the documentaries. Love that kinda stuff.

Hey friends, I could use your input on something. I'm a couple months or so from my two-year anniversary of picking up the bass. I stumbled around a bit at first, then took an online course, then took private lessons for a bit, and now I'm back to stumbling around. Where I could use your input is this: what would you say is a song in the vicinity of our shared musical taste that should be challenging yet totally doable for someone at the two-year mark?

I know everyone progresses differently, and there are no hard and fast milestones, but I'm thinking this could be a good way for me to get a rough handle on where I'm at. If I can manage the song, great. If not, it's something to work towards.

I think Black Sabbath - Die Young is plenty challenging, but also should be doable
