Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I've been busy!
turned my gutted marshall dsl into basically my dream doom amp: Marshall jcm800 1992 bass amp. if the power amp tubes weren't so close together (or if i weren't too lazy to make a new metal plate) I'd have bigger bottle output tubes but settled on jj kt77. had an extra preamp tube hole so added a jcm800 lead-voiced input. lots of tones
then i drove across the state to pickup a 72 traynor yba1. after recapping and a few slight mods i love the different tones i can get depending on guitar/bass plugged in
picked up some pedals from a fellow doomer to repair and what i was afraid of happening happened: fell in love with his fathom so i HAD to order one from sweetwater
friend in the uk who i had purchase a staytrem bridge for my bass vi sent it last week so should be here at any time
have to remember to finish a recording for a compilation tape Monday
refinishing a gibson les paul that came to me covered in stickers is a huge pain in the dick in this Florida humidity

@kleinenenten painting just takes lots of time and patience.
Don't skip sealing the wood. I highly recommend minwax wood hardener. It dries quick and will strengthen the wood, which helps if it's basswood. It's a thin epoxy and can be rubbed on.
Prep and a cleanish environment mean everything.

i use varathane waterbased poly for everything. mix in some dyes and shoot with a paint sprayer. as soon as i take the guitar out of the air conditioned house (where coats dry due to air circulation) it's covered in water droplets. it'll turn out okay just a lot more level sanding than I'm used to

Yesterday I rage quit my band over BL's passive-aggressive behaviour. Singer, drummer, and me were so happy about finally getting together again, about how well we work together, about how we're beginning to feel each other musically. And BL/guitarist destroys it, can't do anything but criticize. Not to your face, mind you, but through text message. (We communicate very well, very respectfully, when the four of us are face to face.)
Then he wants to change this, and change that, because rehearsals don't please him but he doesn't know why. All this in long, sour text messages. Every helpful suggestion from us is shot down.
Worst, he wants a repertoire change. This change has been discussed several times, and I'm very much against it and have stated my reasons very clearly. Yet here he texts again, suggesting the change, worded as if it's a new idea, and would we please give this new idea some thought. When I read that I immediately fired myself. I feel relieved.

Great combo, when I use WB that's my preference. If you can bare keeping it in your house longer till enough solvent flashes off it may help, or use IR lamps to dehydrate it faster. I've also seen some people rig up indoor booths using PVC, plastic sheets, a box fan, and the clothes dryer vent as an outlet. Granted this was a coworker and since he paints Rams for a living is a little anal. Worked like a gem though.
Have you tried using solventbourne? It's more resistant to the humidity, though the solvents are stronger smelling but unless you're in a shop painting with it for a career, it won't be a problem.
Sorry to deep dive in it, my life kinda revolves around OEM auto painting. Sick work on that DSL by the way, never heard either amp but I'm sure it rips.
@instrumentalist I don't blame ya, though did you talk to the drummer and singer about going on without the guitarist? Hell I'd give him the boot, finding people who you mesh with is tough.

I briefly considered it, but I don't seem to be meshing with any of them individually. It was the combination of four that meshed well.
@Novarocker the issue is condensation forming bringing the 70ish degree guitar into the 90 degree humid outside. I've been giving way more time between coats than i do in the cooler months
Sounds like leaving was a good choice there. Hope you'll find something better that brings you more joy

Alright, opening a can of worms here. Getting an old DOD pedal fixed, and the repair guy asks if I have sprayed anything in it. I have recently sprayed drum tuner/lubricant specifically made for old TV tuners/knobs, and he says it’s everywhere. It doesn’t evaporate he says, and it seems correct. His recommendation is to use DeOxit D5, which I have heard actually harms pots in the long run by flushing away the original lubricant. It will solve the problem temporarily, but will keep coming back quicker every time. That’s why I used the lubricant I did. I have heard DeOxit is to be used on in/out jacks exclusively.
Question - what do you use to clean/lube pots? Why? Is it any different than what you use to clean in/out jacks? If it’s DeOxit, which variety exactly? Thanks all.

Yeah that's a bummer. I don't have nearly the experience with waterbourne as I do solvent. I know that with solvent it can defend against rewetting from condensation if it dries out/flashes off enough before moisture exposure. Makes sense though that the moisture would rewet and mess with the coat a bunch.
I'll see if the spot repair guys know of any good work around that could help you. Leveling is such a pain.
staytrem arrived with an assist from an internet friend in the uk so now the low e on my bass vi is properly intonated. still waiting for new strings to arrive at the local shop so i can have something bigger than an 84 on there. a little too floppy for me
getting a handle on playing triads above the 12th fret with reverb and chorus/phaser for more spacey stuff

Trying to make a modular small rig. I have an old GK Backline 112 that has the ability to disconnect the speaker. Would it be possible to get an identical combo and then make/buy some sort of box to connect both to one of the heads? It’s rated to go to 8ohms, but I can’t find out how many ohms the internal speaker is. Is this a series/parallel issue if I connect both? I don’t know the electrical/resistance side of the connections.
dcr reading of the speaker will clue you into its impedance. most likely would run loads in parallel (recently discovered that the sunn sl160 has its external speaker jack in series which is WEIRD but most of the planet uses parallel connections as there are no switching jacks to cause headaches down the road)
