Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Big Zep fan, though I wasn't a big fan until 10-12 years ago. Don't know if I could pick a favorite, probably II, though no quarter and Achilles last stand are my two favorite songs. I think for me the fact that they go all over the spectrum is one of the most impressive feats they did, and the fact that so much of it was not really heard off at that time.
Nice! Yeah houses of the holy and Zep II would be my recommendation for a start point. I would also say that Zep grew on me and I've never been crazy about stairway.

That second side of Zep II is just kick ass. I gotta listen back through III though, I don't think it gets as much love among fans.
Oddly enough Tool's cover was my introduction to Zep outside of stairway and immigrant song. That is hands down probably the best cover of any song I've heard.
JPJ heavily influenced my approach to bass. I honestly gravitate towards that almost melodic rhythm guitar approach to bass lines more than anything.
Houses of the Holy is my short answer for anyone with a background in stoner/doom.
Long answer: First three are definitely legendary I agree. Zeppelin IV is the most famous (because it has stairway). But if you randomly selected a zeppelin album and listened to it front to back you'll find some music you like. Physical Graffiti is kind of a long listen so don't dive into that monster unless you have some more time.

Figured this is the place with the most people who use downtuned Fenders. I've never been satisfied with my lowest string on my P-bass. I tune CGCF and I've tried different brands and gauges. Right now I'm using a .120 Rotosound.
Do you guys have any tips on setting up a good low string? The headstock makes it hard to get a good break angle. I've tried 3 wraps but I think that always kinks the string. My tech suggested 1 wrap so the string would be almost a straight line from the headstock but I'm not sure I liked the results. Action-wise I've tried low and medium with mixed results. I like to slam my strings pretty hard so low action is iffy.

I personally have no experience. If it help I think Dunlop or EB make a downtuned set with a 125-135 E string. That or a 5 string set should work. No idea on the wraps though. Maybe taking a look at 5ers to get an idea on what they do with B strings.
I know I'm in the minority here but I use .105s for drop C and adjust my technique accordingly.
Also gave zeppelin 3 a proper listen on the turntable last night. Such a great album. I obsessed over them hard in high school and then moved on of sorts. JPJ is such a beast. Sabbath and Xeppelein always seemed like such diff bands, I never compared the two. Both amazing and made great things happen.

I don't know if the number of wraps is the first place I'd look. That said, a tapered string might get you more wraps and less kinking (I have no idea if the Rotosounds are tapered, though). It might be a good idea to try different strings anyway.
Led Zeppelin III was the first album of theirs my dad gave to me. My dad and uncle were able to see them in Memphis on their first full US tour. III was actually recorded in Memphis at Ardent studios. My old hardcore band got to record there back in the day. It’s an incredible studio. It was so wild knowing that we were using some of the same equipment as a ton of huge artists.
I use medium gauge strings for every tuning I use including C standard. Most my basses are tuned to D or C. I’ve tried the heavy strings for the C but I feel they ring out differently. I will however use a heavy string for a B. That’s kind of a must imo.
Hmm, I've also noticed a change in tone with thicker strings. I've actually thought about trying medium gauge but I've always used .120 or thicker.
How about Nate Newton here? Those strings look kinda loose don't they?
How do you guys setup your basses with medium (.105?) strings?
Gave some of their tunes a spin but nothing's really got me hooked. Guess I'll stick to Sabbath and Cream :^)

Both my downtuned 4 strings are setup fairly low considering. Ive always had low action.

I just tried a cheap .100 Warwick set I had lying around and gave my bass a 5-minute setup. The P felt a lot more responsive and sounded pretty good all across the board (if you don't take the fret buzz into account). And that low string finally sounded like I wanted it to!
Now I've just got to get me some high tension medium strings and give my Fender a proper setup.

I forgot I still had this floating around. I did this a few years back with my jazz; just dicking around tbh. It's in drop c and 105s...starts off clean and then its not.
