Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Amp made a minor smell today... No smoke, thankfully, but just a hint of something. First time in years I had it cranked to "pretty loud" to test out my speaker install from yesterday. Here's to hoping it was just some dust or something being zapped. Turned it off immediately, rested it for a bit, and it came back on no problem, with no more smell. Trying to stay optimistic, because I REALLY don't want to have to get that thing fixed. My recent spat of random amp/bass/whatever issues has me seriously considering downsizing and putting the money towards something new so I'm not constantly hunting down some sort of issue.

Still slight smell today. Thinking maybe it's the new components from this summer's repair heating up. I haven't had any need to crank it at all in a few years, so maybe a combo of dust and new components when I've been playing loud the last few days to test the new speaker. Here's to hoping, at least! No smoke, or any odd behavior from the amp, so I'm thinking it's nothing big. But paranoia gets the best of us all...

I haven't ran it at proper volume, but I can use the passive plug on my amp again. The OG pickup needed the active input given the insane impedance. I think the model one is like 12k instead of the OG's 30k. In parallel mode its got a bunch more in the mids and waaaay less lows. Seems a bit more defined and open tone-wise.

Woah I didn't know it was only 12k. Good to know, been thinking about trying one for some time. Got to meet and listen to Sheehan on a couple occasions and I think his bass uses one. His bass can pull some sick tones.

If I ever make another Fenderbird I wanna try twin Model 1's or the Will Power version.

That'd be so cool.

I know, right? Had my wife sniffing my amp. She was confused, but her superior nose couldn't smell or pinpoint anything either. Put me a little at ease. I also got a similar smell from the plastic tub inches away from the amp, so I sniffed that. Maybe the amp is moving air from that?. Who knows, but I'm gonna play until something happens. Amp was.recently serviced, cab checks out, bass has been checked out too. Everything SHOULD be good...

I am! Unfortunately, the problem hydra has reared its ugly head. I'll spare details, but today I had issues with 3 of my 5 basses. I was able to diagnose and fix 2, one of which was easy (battery) the other which was a bit tougher (trying to find out which wire in the cavity was grounding out while moving around during jamming). Third one is going to a tech. Too much for me.

Here's to hoping my bass gets fixed easily and cheaply, and my amp/cab stays fixed! These last few months have been a maintenance nightmare on my gear, and I just want to play! Bass is supposed to be my "happy place", and it's been a while since that's been consistent. I've been contemplating getting rid of plenty of stuff just to be done with it! (Though I'm glad I can fix or at least do a decent diagnosis of most problems.)

Dropped off my bass at a local shop today, hoping it's a simple fix. They had some decent stuff there, gear-wise, but no decent basses. Anybody have any experience with Doctor Bass cabs? They had a 112 there that seemed great and may scratch my low volume needs these days. When I pick up my bass, I'm definitely bringing my little GK MB200 to try it out with. That would be a great little practice rig, I think!

They also had a DG Microtubes 500 head there. Shockingly, it did nothing for me. As a big fan of the B3K for years (until recently) it sounded far tamer than the pedal. And I got almost no difference between the B3K and VMT modes. I'm happy it did nothing for me - keeps the cash in my pocket!

Dang. Well, good thing this one is used and ready to go! If I pick it up, he gets nothing from it!

And after reading through some of that thread, it seems his workmanship can be a bit iffy as well. Double dang. Guess I'll keep waiting on finding a GK Neo 112.

Glad @StayLow posted up. Was gonna send you the same. He's on the same...err pantheon as Darin Huff basses. I think Huff's quality was insanely good though.

If you're looking for an awesome 1x12 that can create shocking amount of low end at low volumes - since this is a Stoner/Doom thread - if you can find a Mesa Walkabout Scout 1x12, without the cutout since you already have an amp - that'd be great. I've used the Scout cabs with my GK MB200 and they match very well.

No slag on the GK Neo 112 - never tried one.

Never had the 112, but the 212 I have is a great cab. It’s an overall more hifi with upper mids and highs accentuated with a compressed low end. That’s just judging from various jazz and pj basses into an RB400iv, 400, and Fusion S 800. I’d guess the 112 would be similar at least.

My ideal situation is to find a 112 with the exact specs as my GK Neo 410 but quieter, but of course that won't happen. So I'm figuring the 112 option would be good and I can always EQ to get my tone. I was really digging the Dr. Bass cab at the store, but it sounds like a hit-or-miss option, and the build quality is often suspect according to the other thread (and of course, the business practices that I won't deal with going second-hand). Makes a bit of sense now why it was so cheap!

More tootin' my own horn.....got together with a couple of guys yesterday from a couple of bands ago. We all live closer to each other now and the drummer reached out to us (he had the space) so we made it happen. Semi crappy 10x10 storage unit, but it was not too bad. My wacky rig of total sheeeit was this semi crappy amp made by Aria called the 'Loco Micro Bass Amp' I've had for a while.....basically a 2x6" combo, about 60w, and plugged the 15" speaker from the Fender Sidekick 50 combo that was already there for a whopping 90w.....koo koo for coco puffs and sounded about as good as you can imagine. I was lazy yesterday, sue me! Oh, and I was running a PD7 but the output jack died about halfway through the practice.

I am rusy as fcuk and obviously not used to playing standing up, jeeeez. Here's some music for those that need a refresher (disclaimer - recorded before I joined up, so the guitar player did all the bass parts)

One of my PD7s also sporadically goes out the past few weeks. Need to get it checked out by the local pedal guy. Also, need to buy another. Just for a spare...

In good bass news, I had an urge last night to get some more HM-2 goodness back on the board. Put the Throat Locust back on and started tweaking. Ended up with a Lemmy-ish tone after a while. Not a traditional HM-2 tone by any stretch, but I'm loving it. And it stacks shockingly well with both the GK Rails pedal feeding it and it feeding either my Pork Loin or Swollen Pickle.

I also find it amusing that I found "Lemmy's tone" in the lower distortion regions of a box renowned for sonic annihilation. Seems appropriate for Motörhead.

What's up homies? Picked up my bass 4 days in a row. That hasn't happened in almost 4 years Haven't listened to much in the genre in that long too. Been goofing around making stupid synth noises and chopping up breakbeats in the DAW recently. Listening to all those breakbeats made me dust off the bass and restring it. Already want new pickups. hahaha.
How's everyone been during the whole pandemic thing?
