Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

My phone, which has served me well for nearly 5 years, is definitely giving up the ghost. Guess that means no fretless for me... Adulthood sucks.

Anybody have recommendations for decent, affordable, Android phones? I don't want anything fancy, just basic email, browsing, FB, and using maps. Seems like there's a huge price gap between about $200 to around $500. Ideally, cheaper is better, though I'd like to keep it a few years at least.

I recently got a Galaxy S10e and I love it. Its basically an S10 but with a slightly less good camera and smaller battery. It's got the form factor of the classic smart phones ie not so frigging huge but tip top processor features etc. I got it brand new off ebay for I think about $400. Super happy with it.

for sustainability you could also look at the Fairphone. It's a bit expensive, but with the modular system you should be set for a few years.

^that's a great concept!

I've had immense luck with Motorola's mid tier phones. Last one that just got replaced with a company phone was a Play Z IIRC. Battery lasted for days sometimes (3yrs in still at 30+% by bedtime each night). I like it a lot more than my Co phone, a Galaxy A51.

@cornfarmer, yesh that's effed. I get peeps hunting down deals, and or just buying low, and flipping for 10% or something. Hell some people make a living that way, like buying off pawn shops. But when they're talking people way down on the price then turning around and flipping for double thats just dumb.

I'm a grumpy old man and these newfangled phones are the dickens :cigar:

Seriously though, mobile is a dumb, evil industry nowadays. I spent quite a bit of time & effort recently de-googling myself and my current phone setup doesn't spy on or track me now. Never used social media that much because it turned into a cancerous thing after a while....so no need for that on a phone. It was worth it. No, I don't sport a tinfoil hat, but I do look good in one.

If you guys ever want to get the F away from GAFAM I can give you some tips.

I recently got a used Pixel XL from Swappa for a $105. It works fine and was in perfect condition. I don't mind that it's not cutting edge...anything that deters me from spending time on my phone is fine by me.

I've been close to picking up a Juke or something like that. Really just calls, text, music are key to me. Navigation is a plus but not needed, and being able to do a search for info is nice, but I am all for something that makes browsing a pain.

Maybe I'm becoming grumpy, but I miss flip phones.

Picked up an Atreides, can't wait for it to get here.

Been wanting an Atreides...

In regards to the phone, I got the "house brand" from my provider. Same specs as name brand, 2/3 the price, and well under what I was expecting to spend, which is nice. I also don't do much, and actively want a worse experience to keep me off the phone and playing bass. Sorta the same reason I didn't replace the old tablet a few months ago. Love chatting with you fine folks and all, but at some point, I need to stop TalkBass and start PlayBass. Fewer digital distractions, and making the ones I have more difficult, have gone a long way. These days, I typically only check TB after 8PM. It used to be numerous times throughout the day. It's a win.

What is GAFAM?

Lol thanks for asking, I assumed it meant Google, FB and Amazon, but didn't know.

I know this isn't TalkPhones, so if anyone wants to hear the what why where how etc. feel free to PM me. It's a bit of an adjustment.

Have to look up this Atreides now....

Do it, I bought it on the name and the fact that its a copy of an 80's EHX synth (encased in cardboard nonetheless!).

The videos I've seen of it are really compelling.

Is it the Google Drive/Photos/Docs/etc. ecosystem you're talking about?
No, I mean YouTube is the only service I would find truly irreplaceable*. So great for music discovery, documentaries, tutorial/instructionals...
Yeah I know I'm being a hypocrite by not using Amazon or other stuff for their ethics, and then selling my soul to Google for knowledge, à la Doctor Faustus :smug:

*(I don't think I could easily do without Maps, actually...) (Jeesus I feel so filthy now)
