Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Awesome rig! Not to be the Talkbass cliche guy, but I wonder if your feelings about this setup would be different if your cabs were closer to ear level...?
Embrace the cliche! It's a fair shout, but it reflects my single amp set up and normally at rehearsal I get a good 3-5m away from the rig so I'm not on top of it and get a sound from all the room. I expect there may well be much better results in a recorded studio environment with a bit of tweaking, just didn't feel it live. ✌️

how is the war pig on bass?
I really really like it when I hit the right gain level on my amp it's a really good pedal. I tried the amp top box as well and whilst they're meant to be the same I felt the box was a little better.
That said, Im moving away from it as I've got a new one on order from Does It doom - the WALPURGIS. Tried my guitarists in Monday and it suits my pallet better - I think there's a bad insta vid on his page of me trying it out.

So I messed around with my set up at rehearsal on Monday night and went with a two amp set up.
GT200 pretty clean and GT150 pretty dirty. Each went to a Barefaced 210. I used my switcher to send dirt to one, kept the other clean and messed around with various different dirt combinations between the amps (Dunwich wizard fuzz, damnation mdb2 and a mustard FX war pig).
My key learnings:
1. Load in is heavier and longer with two amps - there's also less space in my car
2. Set up takes longer and you need more cables
3. Adjusting the tone of the rig takes a lot more thought and consideration
4. It can get very very loud and is fun having your amps on show
5. Load out is a lot less fun
Thanks for sharing, and your insights / learnings. Funny enough, most of those points except 1 and 5 made me (mostly) stop using my Orange Bass Butler for gigs. Without a stage snake, cable runs are a pain in the behind, and don't get me started explaining the concept of “there’s two channels for the bass guitar ya know” to most live desk people around here – never mind the time it takes to have a decent mix, or expecting said desk people to react to changes in room acoustics on the fly, properly …

I saw your video and your guitarist's. Sounds really nice and you guys are great band! Been hearing that it's very amp like. Bummer I missed out on the Walpurgis. Hopefully I can pick one up later. I have their Sabbathi which I adore and I've been eyeing their Doomcaster.

Ah, yeah that's exactly what went through my head as well - stage sound Vs the battle with FOH to ensure its a sound I intended. I don't play many gigs where we spend a great deal of time dialling it all in. I really like the look of the bass butler. Would like to try one at home sometime.

Thanks, that's kind of you to say.

Yeah that's bang on - it's very amp like and has a nice sweep from preamp-esque to nicely driven. I had it cranked in the video and it sounds great.
I think he still has a load. I only put my order in today on it and hopefully making its way over the pond by early next week. I'll try and do a proper vid when it lands

Looking forward to the vid.

As soon as I read this I had to google it. Then I found this:

Those are all awesome as far as I’m concerned…

Don't get me wrong - I still listen to them occasionally (on the radio, mostly!) and warm up with some of their stuff. But these days, if I'm actively choosing to listen to something, it's rarely them. I've got too much other stuff. I'll listen to plenty of their other Bay Area contemporaries, though! Speaking of which, I need to go find the new Exodus album...
———————————————————————
Wife and I saw them at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento the second week of October while we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary a few months late…

That was time #8 for me and #9 for my Wife…Followed immediately by time #10 on Sunday bc they played two separate nights)…

They still COMPLETELY MURDER it live…

They really must have gotten a really good deal from Satan on their stardom or something <—-(said w/ tongue firmly planted in cheek) bc GOOD GOD MAN…HOW are ya’ll almost 60 and still playing that kind of music that loud and that fast Man???….Like *** Man??? You shouldn’t be able to play Whiplash at that pace ESPECIALLY at your age…

ANYway…I digress…

I do get what you mean about not wanting them to dominate your listening habits the way you stated that…I feel like they are also enjoyed in a cumulative manner (e.g. listening to Metallica somehow always begets more Metallica so you get this vicious cycle of wanting more (You know…Like how drugs work <—-(LITERALLY!!! :) )…

…And I’d be curious to know how my listening habits actually shake out in the Metal sub genres (I’d be willing to guess that they are probably 40% of my listening habits mostly due to a couple of songs early in the week followed by a TON of listening to them on the weekends…

Ive noticed in the last few weeks/months that I tend to follow the following daily schedule of Metal:

Work: Iron Maiden (really good background noise bc they consistently have similar song structures that still sound good at a low volume)…

Workout: Nu Metal, Groove Metal, 90s/early 2000s and beyond (Slipknot, Godsmack, Disturbed, Pantera, Rob Zombie, Lamb Of God, Mudvayne, etc.)

Bass practice: Sabbath, White Zombie, Maiden, TONS of Alice In Chains, Metallica, (occasionally bands from the list above bc I tend to try to play what I listen to during the day in hopes I might learn to hear the bass lines better and thus inadvertently improve at my instrument)…

Late night relax/chill: P.O.D. or Alice In Chains (alternate between the two depending on the day of the week

To fall asleep to: Death Metal, Generic Thrash, Doom Metal, etc. (usually from Apple Music’s subcategory)…It has taken me the longest time of all Metal genres to get into this kind of music but kinda finally did it this year…

I was resistant to a lot of the music in this bucket due to bad vocals (which I now mostly ignore) until I did more research on the overall genre…Personally I am not a fan of Black Metal, so I had to learn to sift out the super Satanic bands for personal reasons, but I feel like the redundancy of the riffs and the almost incomprehensible lyrics drone me to sleep (it’s kinda like if you’ve ever tried to listen to Slayer at a low volume while you wait to fall asleep- Interesting how some of those Swedish Death Metal bands almost turn into white noise if you listen to those riffs at a low volume with your eyes closed…

So…Yeah…

In Conclusion: Metallica Rules. Thank you.

Thanks! \m/

I've been meaning to make a general post about straps for a while now. The one strap I have that I like is too long (I'm average height but I keep the bass up at uber nerd level), and leather is out of the question. I guess the fact that I only play at home for my cats means I haven't had much motivation to look into it more.

Anyway, this is the one I have that I like:https://www.kliqmusicgear.com/produ...ectric-guitar-adjustable-black-regular-length (after looking this up I just realized they do make a shorter version than the one I have...I'm a moron...also I thought it has fake leather but now I'm not certain of that)

The length adjustment of the other one I have constantly slips so I have to periodically readjust it. I can't stand that one. Here it is FWIW: https://monocreators.com/products/betty-guitar-strap-short-black

So I messed around with my set up at rehearsal on Monday night and went with a two amp set up.

My key learnings:

2. Set up takes longer and you need more cables
3. Adjusting the tone of the rig takes a lot more thought and consideration
4. It can get very very loud and is fun having your amps on show
5. Load out is a lot less fun

Ultimately where my head got to is that this approach gave me little to no benefit on tone or loudness Vs single amp into more speakers. I think if I ever need to do this on a massive stage with loads of speakers I'll just slave a head so a single preamp controlling things.

I'm still intruiged by the Tyler splitting frequency but for the volumes and tones that I use (filthy most of the time or gentle and clean) there's no benefit. Still fun all the same.
Going forward I'll just take more cabs when I want to be obnoxious with my rehearsal rig.
Pic for fun
