Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Are you specifically planning a long-distance move? Any reason why?
Yeah. I want to get out of Colorado. After 20+ years I've had my fill and I don't like the direction it's going (fires, no more winter, turning into California culturally). Right now I'm looking at NH and the UP. More trees and less people is the goal.

I never ever thought I'd have any interest in living in the midwest, but I am seriously considering the UP of Michigan for my 2022 move. (It has nothing to do with COVID, though, just the subject of the midwest.)
Literally anywhere north of the major metro areas in Michigan is pretty great. I'm an hour north of the Detroit Metro area. Near a river and a Great Lake [Huron] and dang close to Canada.

I was just being a smartass :cigar:

Also probably a little surprised that anybody noticed mics/placements in the first place

....AAAANNNDDDDD F THAT NOISE with more CA lockdown BS, so tired of living in this stupid afraid of it's own shadow lockdown state
Well, my wife just had one of her best friends pass from it, along with that friend's father, and her mother (not my wife's, her friend's) is in the hospital with a 60-40 chance of pulling through. So, wear your masks, everyone.

Don't post stuff like this without a link ;)

The Best Metal Albums of 2021

There are some albums on there I still need to listen to, so I will withhold judgement
The Illudium album is the only one on there I can get behind. The Panopticon album is definitely better than his prior album, but Waldgefluster totally blew him out of the water this year.

I haven't put much thought into any "best of 2021" of my own, not that anyone asked me to anyway. :D

My "best of 2021" list is non-existent, and I feel I'd have to go back and see what was actually released this year...

Off the top of my head, I really love the new Hypocrisy album. And I enjoy the new Mastodon, but it's not necessarily my style. Can't deny their musicianship, but I think I prefer their slightly heavier and less proggy side. And that being said, I've never been a big Mastodon fan. Just trying to listen to recent and new albums. It's not new, but I also enjoyed the remaster of Sodom's M-16. Not a huge difference in quality, but it brought the vocals a bit more to the front and cleared them up, and also reduced some of the fuzziness of the guitars. Overall, a slight improvement to an already great album.

I grew up in Texas so I friggin’ hate the snow, but I agree something is “Not right” here at the moment regarding the weather…

I’ve heard the mountains have gotten more snow than here in town, but we only had one storm that dropped maybe an inch or two a few weeks back which is STRANGE IMO bc we usually get a major storm before Halloween (or at least Thanksgiving)…

Granted I like not having snow, but something feels very “off” this year…

As for people flocking here…Eh…I feel like that has somehow gotten worse every year we’ve lived here (worry I’m part of the problem-We moved here for work in 2013 so we aren’t natives)…

Housing prices are also a joke…

I know what we paid for our home and it’s definitely not worth what we can sell it for at the moment (I literally laughed when someone in our neighborhood sold their house recently bc I know our house isn’t worth that much, but prices just keep climbing (it’s crazy)…I’m hoping to eventually sell and move to Vegas where there’s better weather, no winter, better entertainment options, and cost of living is lower…

Personally I wouldn’t wanna move to Michigan or the Midwest, but I know where you’re coming from and what you mean about wanting to get out of here and how rapidly things have (and continue) to change…

And culturally I like some things about living here (e.g. like legalization), but there are a LOT of Millennial Hipsters here now…

And let’s be honest here…NOBODY needs that…

Thanks! \m/

What are the summers like up there? Super humid with tons of bugs?
Not super humid, at least compared to say Florida. August is peak temp/humidity. Less bugs than the south though.

I love being out far from the city, but close enough to drive in to see a gig or play one. FWIW, I'm in Marysville, just south of Port Huron, which is s bridge away from Sarnia Ontario and sits at the end of the Saint Clair River and Lake Huron.

Here's from a park in Port Huron. That's Lake Huron. It's cold af even in the summer, but still fun.

The UP is gorgeous. But so is the 'thumb' area. Also the west 'coast' like Sagatuck and Holland though those are touristy in the summer, full of fancy Chicagoans. Lol

Thanks for the info @br1qbat ...the biggest issue for me now is that I've never been to Michigan to check it out in person.

Shamelessly copying the Ambient thread, what are everyone's bass-related hits and misses of 2021? Mine...

Hits:
JHS Packrat (the Brat setting is currently my favorite)
EQD Astral Destiny (not an all purpose reverb, but when I want spacey it's got my back)
Ibanez GWB35 (need to upgrade the pickup and electronics though)
Ibanez SRMS800 (tuned in fifths...nearly from the start I've played fivers and the minimalism of the four string feels like a revelation)
Lessons (I still suck though)

Misses:
Ibanez EHB1506MS (not a complete miss, but it just didn't give me the fizz quite like I'd hoped so I sold it...very well could've been that 6 string is just not my bag)

The jury is still out:
Alexander F.13 flanger. It's in transit but I have high hopes. Though my Line 6 HX Effects does a whole lot of effects well, I haven't been thrilled with any of its flangers.

^^^^
UP is beautiful but very, very empty. Personally I really love the Western side of Michigan in particular New Buffalo area and Holland are very beautiful and have amazing beaches. If you like the beach you should check those areas out.

Amen to the 4 stringer comment. I made my way around a 5er exclusively for a good 5-6 years around college. Going back to a 4 was like having the planets realign.

On the F13, are you using a different standalone flanger currently? I use phaser occasionally in my band, but while it’s in the shop getting fixed I’ve been thinking about moving to flanger. The Alexander, Walrus, and Boss BF-3 are the front runners right now without getting into a bigger unit like the new purple demon from Strymon…

Until the F13 arrives I only have what's in the HX when it comes to flangers. I looked at the Walrus and Boss but the F13 seemed to be the closest to what I am going for. I didn't know Strymon makes one
