Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey guys, hope y'all all had good holidays. I think I'm gonna try to move out of Texas ASAP so y'alls convo about moving from a week or so ago was interesting to me. Born and raised here, and will always love this state but I'm literally getting priced out. If I wanted to stay in the city I'd probably be renting for the rest of my life, or at least that's how it looks right now. Michigan is very tempting, only problem is I'm used to Texas heat but I bet I could learn to live with it...

Anyway, as far as music goes I played my first "bad" show on NYE weekend (I'd type this whole ordeal out but I'm currently at work), and I got my board to a place where I like it. I used to have problems with the pedals falling off and not sticking to the velcro so I replaced all of it and it's working great now (pic below of my pedals staying on). I got an isolated power supply for it as well. My girlfriend also got me the boss RC-5 looper which has been pretty sick to play with (also in the pic). Mostly I just use the drum loops to practice but I've played around with some recordings and whatnot too.

I'm looking at visiting Michigan in April-ish to check it out, and still optimistically aiming for moving sometime in the summer. I'd like to get my house listed in June or so.

If you don't want such a drastic change in weather, have you considered New Mexico? It's a gorgeous state, though I have no idea what real estate prices are like.

Been playing the intro for Whom the Bell Tolls over and over again on it lately lol.

I'm actually visiting New Mexico in April to see Sleep so I'll definitely be watching out for nice-looking areas. Not that I'm in a position to acquire property at this moment in time, will probably be spring 2023 before I graduate anyway.

Yeah I went with dual lock on the board and velcro from west coast pedalboard on the pedals. Took me some time to figure out but it's all good now.

but concerning real estate that's the thing, I want to buy rural/ semi rural. But now if I wanted to buy land with nothing built on it that's within 2 hours of a major city I'm looking at easily 15-20k an acre on the cheap side with prices dropping a little if you're buying more land but it's a pretty shallow slope from what I've seen. Always wanted to do a homestead type thing because I'm tired of suburbs and suburb size/style houses but at this point I think the only land I could afford here is out west or in the panhandle in the real middle of nowhere. Then the problem of having an actual place to work arises!

If you can work it into your plans, some of the Earthships are on Air BnB and they're a trip to stay in.

Don't get me wrong, I generally do like it despite some of its features not being accessible without their software. My next synth purchase will probably be one of the Behringer copies of the old Moog sequencer and start a modular system, or an analog semi-modular with a sequencer included like the brutes.

I thought about going with the L8 when I bought a recorder/board recently. It being able to be battery powered was really attractive. However, the meters being so limited was probably what made me go with the Tascam Model 12.

Hehehe, my singer just moved there. We just had a cold rainy morning, but he had snow and ice. Once you figure in that real estate in Santa Fe is more expensive than it is in Dallas, I don't see the attraction. However, not everyone is me.

For me the main thing is how well people of my profession get compensated. Benefits and pay vary so wildly from state to state I have to study for everyone I consider. I'd love to live in Oklahoma, and land is reasonable there as I understand it, but I'd be in one of the worst states in America for my work.

Honestly, DFW is an option. But I'm not sure if I want to go back

I'm psyched to hear about it! Did people come out? I play my first Denver show since Feb of 2018, which kind of blows my mind. Prior to this, I hadn't gone but a few months without playing a local show since '07. It's largely due to a cascade of tragedies, personal, w/in the band, and the obvious global happenings. With the COVID ramp up, I expect this to be my last show for a while, which will also make this the first and potentially last show for Funeral Mask. If I'm lucky, my show at the end of the month won't be cancelled.

Outside of FM, I'm a bassist in a HC band, but it's really more of a hang w/ great music than a passion project. I plan to go all-in on my synth/bass project. As it is currently just me, the challenge is allocating time to be alone and create, and not get distracted. For the geeks, I'm running a few Elektrons and Moogs w/ a bass rig.

That was one of my go-to riffs when A/B'ing Muffs lately. Long story short, I kept my Pharaoh Supreme on board #1 after a few days against my Swollen Pickle. The Pharaoh takes more volume/headroom to make it work, and the Pickle doesn't (and also sounds less cohesive distortion-wise with more headroom, the compression of less headroom glues it together).

Anyway, if you want an even better PD7 tone, run it through a Darkglass B7KU's "clean" side. I had a B7KU a few years ago, and passed it along ASAP as I didn't like it at the time. But with my recent trend of adding more treble to my tone, I picked up a cheap clone on a whim. Really digging it at the end of my dirt to add a slight bit more definition and harmonics, as well as making my "clean" tone a bit more articulate, especially the flats. I'm not normally a DG fanboy (and I suppose this is a clone...), but I've been pleasantly surprised to say the least.

So you're running the B7KU with the distortion/drive off and just using it as a clean boost? Or are you tweaking its EQ also?

Does anyone in Denver have a truss rod wrench for a mim Fender? It is the one that adjusts at the headstock. I have what I think is a 3/16th allen wrench and it is too small. I am hoping that this nut isn’t stripped. I just bought a p-bass off FB marketplace and I’m hoping I didn’t buy a dud.
