Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Ah yeah that's the one. I guess what I'm really asking about the new production SGs is how pedal friendly they are for getting doom tones. My old EB-0 worked with exactly 1 overdrive pedal, and I had it going into an SVT-II.
Ah I see,

Yeah it took me a good while to dial in the tone to just how I like with my mudbucker. I have it paired with a jazz PUP which I'll turn to about halfway and that will usually give it just enough bite for what I need most of the time. I find that with the lows of just the mudbucker it's hard to get real nice breakup from fuzz's/Distortion. If I'm going for a super heavy/distorted tone I'll crank the jazz knob all the way up at which point it overpowers the mudbucker and just sounds like a jazz with some extra low end.

The mudbucker knob always stays cranked^

Thanks for the info

Yeah I think however you slice it the mudbucker is a blessing and a curse. I'm considering a new short scale and the SG is tempting but I recognize there are (a couple) other options. The Wattplower looks interesting. Would also be cool to find a vintage beater SS and throw some Dunable pickups in it.

For a beater short scale, why not the Ibanez Mikro? I've got the five string and it's great.
Ha, I have the Jackson 28.6" 4-string. It's fun for sure, but after going back and forth I don't think it's the platform I want to build on. It did confirm that I don't need the J pickup in a PJ config. I should get the strings for the Mikro 5 and tune it to BEAD.
I have weird hangups about aesthetics/electronics/etc, so I'm kind of all over the place with ideas.

I know the feeling. I detest the look of the traditional Fender headstocks and I feel like I'm the only one. I also have an affinity for wiring a pickup straight to the jack, with no pots or anything else in the bass. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let me counter that, and say

MUFF, MUFF, MUFF, MUFF, MUFF (see, it's more serious, because it's all capitals)

Talking about rats, @lucas303 , I saw your post in the pack rat thread and I'm using my fatrat with almost the same settings (albeit with the fat-mode engaged).
While I appreciate the enthusiasm, muff wasn't an option! The Carcosa is based off the old Maestro FZ-1S. And clearly, the answer is always MORE DIRT. Leaning towards the Rat at the moment, mostly because I've got enough variety in muffs (for now). I've only got one Rat! (Also for now...)

So maybe the question should be this: anybody have any experience with the Blower Box vs. the Landphil? Supposedly the Landphil is a more tweakable Blower Box, but the exact functions of the extra knobs has never really been spelled out. Which one would be better for death/thrash tones?

For bass, I don't think I'd do that, but mostly because I use active basses and blend slightly towards bridge with a mid boost in the EQ. Guitar, however, I've thought of doing exactly that. I pretty much only use the middle position of the pickup selector and have volume and tone on max. No sense in having knobs for me.

I'm right there with you. I've never had a Fender but I could see maybe getting a beaten up black-on-black 70's Musicmaster SS and routing the body for a different pickup. What's worse than a Fender headstock shape is an "almost Fender" headstock shape, of which there are hundreds. Somehow I do like the Reverend headstock design even though it's pretty Fender-adjacent.

Well, I don't have a RAT (never have liked the ones I've had the opportunity to try), and I've never had a Blower Box or a Landphil. But, I do have the difference between the Blower Box and the Landphil in a separate pedal. It's a TK 421, it's an EQ, but one that seems particularly tuned to the frequencies one would be interested in on a distorted bass signal. I've held off mentioning it because I was hoping someone with experience with the other pedals would chime in, but I did make an odd, boring video (I sound like I should be on NPR in it) of the TK 421 being used to EQ the output of a few fuzzes and a distortion pedal.

The distortion I used in the video is an Ibanez SD 9. I've seen claims it's an unholy combo of a RAT circuit and a Muff, but I think it sounds more like a smooth variety of RAT that's really sensitive to its tone knob than anything else. I've queued this vid up to that pedal. I ran the pedal after the fuzz/distortion because it doesn't seem to do anything special to a clean sound (back up the vid to hear that), but its EQ points seem pretty tuned to distortion. I should probably fool around with them chained the other way, but I really like what it does after the distortion. Either way, it might be helpful, even if its only being fed by a similar circuit.

yeah, I meant fuzz, but was too lazy to edit :D

Another dirt alternative (just mentioning because I want one):

JPTR FX Katastrophe Sludgefest Dominator

Sounds great. That's the DiMarzio Model One? I'm not sure how close that is to the new-production Gibson mudbuckers, but slamming any pickup against the neck is going to make some decent lows. Curtis Novak makes a mudbucker to original spec. It costs a fortune but I suppose it's an option to get back the vintage sound if someone needs it in a new SG. Allegedly there's also a $35 Chinese-made one that does the job too.
Yeah. Model one. I still have the og mudbucker. The Dimarzio with tone knob rolled off all the way is basically what the mudbucker sounds like with the tone knob 100%. The Model One adds a lot of clarity.

Speaking of Rats are there any documented mods that make them more bass friendly?

I was considering either building one from scratch or buying a cheap Mosky Black Rat clone as a modification platform, but I found a new Rat 2 on reverb for $66.66!

Wrapping my brain around all of this right now ElectroSmash - ProCo Rat Analysis and this Let’s talk about the Rat Distortion pedal...Is it voodoo or sorcery? - YouTube
Depends on what you mean by bass friendly. For one of my basses I like the Brat as an always-on effect with a very very mild level of distortion. It basically acts as a HPF. Since I happened to already have that bass plugged in, and Reaper open, when I read your post I recorded a short clip. First with the Brat on and second without. It's just open strings...nothing fancy. To me I'd say this rat is "bass friendly" but would it be to someone else? Maybe not. Anyway, listen for yourself...

Thanks that's interesting and I appreciate the clips.

I'm thinking about things like does the LM308N Motorola op-amp vs the Texas Instruments OP07DP really make a difference? I really don't hear it myself. Still wrapping my head around "slew rate" and how deficiencies in components have actually led to the sounds we all prefer as musicians.

Also, would the Baxandall style bass and treble controls of the Solo Rat be worth considering as a mod? Again, I'm not sure. I've been looking into tone stacks and considering possibilities.
