Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

As I've been slowly tweaking my dirt and getting it all right to sit in the mix, a thought has crossed my mind - why aren't more Boss pedals cloned? I don't mean the odd clone here and there, I mean frenzied cloning of some of their iconic circuits. Besides the HM-2 (which IS cloned like crazy!), and maybe the Hyper Fuzz, I'm unfamiliar with any of their dirt pedals being cloned often. For a company as well-known, revered, ubiquitous, and long-lasting, I would think more of their stuff would be copied. I know there are other clones of some of their non-dirt pedals as well, but nothing crazy. So why is there such an absurd amount of Muffs, Rats, Fuzz Faces, Super Fuzzes, Tubescreamers, etc., etc., etc., but so few Boss clones? There are plenty of circuits that are cloned ad nauseum, but so few Boss. Educate me.
Maybe? But - in the same camp - Tubescreamers and Muffs? Another thought, though I don't think it can be given the current state of clones running wild, would be legal action? But I don't think circuits can be patented? I don't know. This whole thing is just an errant thought.
Man, just about every little "gadget" standalone synth has enough of my interest since I got the Werkstatt-01 that I'll read any of their product pages, at least. The Matriarch is going to have to deliver a lot to match up in the fun per dollar of that little synth. So far, it has.
Yeah, it just seems really well thought out. If this space rock thing goes on for a bit, I'm probably going to try to find one used.
Damn, every time I see one of that series, I regret giving away my old 424. May the girl I gave it to always get good use out of it, and may she never run out of cassettes.

But hey, all of my synths can reach far, far below the frequencies my stringed basses can reach (and yeah, far below what I can hear). This isn't talk "stringed" bass ;P
Ya know what? I think my whole recent synth excursion may have its roots in a visit to read that thread. I sometimes still think I'm going to build a full modular system.
Well, I remember a time in the past when they weren't making any more Big Muffs, and we didn't know if anyone was gonna do it again. So people had to start creating some of them for themselves if they weren't wanting to track down an old unit and tune it up. That's where that trend got started, IMHO.
Tube Screamers? The old ones were hard to find and therefore expensive. You could mod a new one to the old one's specs, so people started doing that. Eventually someone decided they didn't want to find a new one and monkey with it, just build it from scratch. Repeat enough times, and someone's going to start doing it as a business.
Boss? It's hard to miss you if you never go away. Plus, other than the FZ-2, their later updates usually actually improve the pedal.
I don't get what this thread is about, even in the very broad or general sense.
It's like I'm at a party in a giant house, wandering around exploring, likely a bit stoned, and I mistakenly walked into a room with a bunch of strangers doing who-knows-what. I feel confusion with a sense of I-shouldn't-be-here.
I think I'll go back to that Dolly Parton RRHoF room or one of those neck relief/truss rod/how-do?/it's as-mysterious-as-lady-private-parts discussions.

Modular synths make pedal addiction seem cheap in comparison. I have a smallish eurorack system i built from various kits, still costly. You really need like 5 or 6 modules at bare minimum to make up a functioning synth. Retail those can be $150 to $600+ per. Then a power supply, and a rack or case. Then patch cables. Just a mini system start up is $$$ and until you get more like 12+ modules can it really do something beyond what a classic all-in-one moog/arp/korg synth can do.
My regret is I should have bought a Korg ms-20 ["mini"] patchable, keyboard, all in one unit. $650ish I think.
All that said, I should have forgone synths altogether as I haven't touched one in ages, but I went down the synth hole when I was out of the band scene.

We are a fuzzy oasis in a desert of tort.
Every now and then I think about dipping my toes into that water for ambient stuff, but I'd want the all in one sort of thing. Knowing absolutely nothing about keyboards and synths though keeps me from going any further than pondering. Sometimes I think about learning more about it but that can only lead to spending more money and buying more gear. On the other hand, there are sounds I want that I think I'd need some sort of synth thing to create.
Speaking of doom synths, anyone get down w/ Author & Punisher? His newest album is my favorite of 2022 so far. He builds all of his own controllers for his synths (and some will be available to purchase soon). If you check out different videos, he has different gear.

This thread is just awesome, that's all I know and all I care about.
It's a good question. I think a lot has to do with availability at a decent price and that they're done well. IDK though, love my SD-2.

I'm by no means an OG but in my time here I've never seen any real disputes in this thread. I'm sure it's happened at some point though, this being the internet and all.
