And for sure I'd post just about every jam session we do. Our practices were more like 10% song rehearsal, 80% experiment/jam with new stuff and 10% noise. Oh and 20% beer and chillness...the math works right? Always supposed to give 110% right?

Oh and like 3% of that song rehearsal was a warm up jam of randomness.

I mean, Stoner/Doom is a pretty dumb label really... I think it was Jack Endino in the "Such Hawks, Such Hounds..." documentary who said something like "Stoner rock is just Grunge, and both of those things are just 70s hard rock, continued."

Perhaps a better label would've been Slacker Rock.

@cusar5 I'd echo that. I think it's one of those where there's so much under the umbrella that it's stupid to really name all these subgenres. But that's like my opinion...man.

For real though, it does make finding similar sounding bands easier to an extent. At least when our new and not sure where to start looking.

It could have been cool but it's weak at best. Fender really needs to up their marketing game.

The traditional headstock with that body shape is all sorts of wrong in my opinion.

And all I see is posts that say, "if it was medium scale and if it had the starcaster headstock I'd buy one".

Would look better with the starcaster hs, but lots of alternative shapes that would look better.

I'm a fan of 4-in-line tuners. I have a hard time saying no to anything with a reverse headstock so that'd be my vote.

Really though, I'm just glad that they (and all other companies) keep trying. Outside of the parallel universe run and the headstock and bridge, anything on it "not new"? I know they've used similar pickups and probably used the preamp before. I really dig the body.

It's like they want to do something different but not TOO different. That approach often ends up leading to milquetoast in any product. Either stick to pumping out more Js and Ps with a different coat of paint, or do something REALLY different.

I do agree. The perspective I look at it though is that they're damned if they do damned if they don't. They unfortunately can't for whatever reason go too far from the formula without alienating customers. It's like it's okay for Ibanez, et al, to cover every bass design need. But God forbid Fender deviate (for the majority of their customer base).

I think a lot has to do with Ibanez setting a precedence that there were no limits. That and producing quality at an affordable price point likely brings more of the consumer base into their "inclusion zone."

Come to think of it, the big MIA manufacturers haven't done anything really out there in some time I think. Besides Gibson's Robo tuners/firebird X and Ric's 5 string, has anyone stateside done anything huge in the last 10 years outside of mashups or insert new body shape with reused parts? G&L, EBMM, Fender, Gibson, Ric, even PRS?

I can't recall right now, but wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong.

Of all the American brands, the one that got closest to it was Ernie Ball with the Game Changer and Big Al (3PU), but both were definitely closer to 10 years ago than recent. Jackson is the only brand trying new stuff in comparison to its history. On the whole though, it’s been rehash after rehash. I haven’t shopped for a brand new bass in years for this very reason.

For sure, I didn't even think of Jackson. I dig the Ric bass they just made. The active electronics in conjunction with that placement is pretty rad. Then again it is a bit of a rehash.

The biggest issue I recall is when a guy in Seattle made Sunn Beta preamp clone and sold a bunch of them to S/D members at a discounted rate. They had faulty PCB's and the power was getting into the sound side of things and they fried everyone's power amps. He also made a pair of 6x10 cabs for an old S/Der (bassist for The Osedax) that were delivered unfinished. The builder's business went belly up and he ghosted everyone. Interestingly, he initially had some clout because he was a subcontractor for Verellen, building their cabs.
