To those of you more into a punk scene or something.

Does ska mean something else in those scenes now? My friend shows me a lot of "ska" bands he's played with and to me it's just punk where the guitar player occasionally hits a few muted "chicka chicka" chords. Hell the bass is still just rapid fire down strokes with a pick.

No to me it is more fast reggae, with horns.

Well, the original ska music was from Jamaica, then in the nineties the name was adopted by pop punk bands with horn sections. Don't know what it's supposed to mean today.

In the 90s, there were a lot more of the traditional ska bands kicking around. There are probably still a few doing the traditional thing but yeah now it is mostly punk ska. Seems like it is a way to make pop punk more annoying.

Hey guys. Haven't been on in a while.(just got home from a deployment among other things.) Thought I'd post a couple pics from the show last night. It was the Trve brewing 2nd anniversary in Denver. Honestly the whole lineup was badass. Bongripper and In the Company of Serpents were shaging awesome. I expected a great show, but this was beyond what I expected. Each band was awesome. There was no lulls from one to the next. Each one picked up right where the other left off. Call if the void was a total surprise. They really reminded me of the level and intensity I'd get from soilent green the many times I've seen them.(not that their music was that similar, just the feeling.)
Stoic dissention played some awesome, slightly atmospheric black metal. Want out of place at all. Really enjoyed it.
Ron, you guys shaging killed it. The whole set was exactly what I would have hoped y'all would play from start to finish. (You did say I'd be surprised. P.s. I'm from Louisiana. I say y'all.)
In The Company of Serpents was shaging heavy as poopie. They were definitely my kind of Satan.

Morning doomsters. Hope everyone had, or is still having, a rad weekend. I almost forgot I had a 6am start today at work so I'm sitting here half awake and improperly shaven. Mondays, man.

Also, Mastodon's "Chimes at Midnight" is amazing.

back from the tech, it needed $500 worth of work, luckily i got a break and only paid $125. Plays great now and it sounds much better with the stock pickup. thanks again @Lazarus.Bird for the find.

I can't say I'm necessarily into the punk scene these days, but ska has had it's different revivals.

Stuff like Dave Hillyard Rocksteady Seven, and Hepcat will always capture the traditional ska vibe. Bands like Skankin Pickle Pietasters always fall into the second wave sound. Stuff like against all authority and MU330 I consider the third and most punk like sound.

The early stuff is closer to reggae. Reggae is derived from it. The second wave stuff has a sort of rock a billy/clash type vibe. The third wave is more like NOFX with horns.

Then their are bands that play a rocksteady style with no horns, like Operation Ivy and Gadjits. These are the type of bands people use interchangeably with ska. These bands would be full fledged ska if they featured horns. Then their are bands that used to be full blown ska bands until the fad faded and they dropped their horn section, like Aquabats and link 80.

Ska and punk blur into each other with bands like rancid, leftover crack, and suicide machines. The lines will continue to blur as long as these two genres share commonalities.

Kinda like stoner and doom. They can be interchangeable at times, but they aren't necessarily the same thing.

Ok guys yea this ska has no horns and the vocals are more in line with crust punk. Gutteral unintelligible stuff.

My friend says the majority of the punk scene here can't play anyways so I guess they have to say what they are as you'd never know by listening lol!

I like sublime lol, about as punky ska I get.

I really dig roots reggae and the real deal stuff

Gonna sell all that, those things I'll try reverb for the first time with. My dad ordered the caps to fix a busted tv of mine and the alphabass and the foot switches to fix my one of my big muffs, the others fine but I put the pots in wonky and need to reseat them then I'll try them both through the alphabass, also trying the Demeter into the power of the alphabass, if I prefer the alphabass pre (reallllllllly hope so) I'm ditching the Demeter too. I'll use reverb there too since it's small. I figure it'll be god for little amps and pedals n shiz.

I have a bunch of other little scraps and crap to sell too. I'm bringing all my guitar/amp/cab/hardware of yet to be determined use to my house from my parents (it'll take a few trips).

This will leave me with a few basses to play, my first guitar I just got from home today, the alphabass, dually, and a pignose in need of a headbox and a cab. Also my pedals.

I can swing a cheap guitar for slide and cheap drums with the returns, as well as cash for parts and strings. The rest will just go into the flipping business.

Pic from DOTD. If I was like 3 ft to the left, all amps would have been in perfect view. But at least look at that Festival series over in the left corner...mmmmmm. My tone was off the fvcking hook, if I change anything I'm stupid at this point. Really now its time for a big purge to get a drum set.

decided to buy a chorus pedal on a whim after playing around with a plugin while mixing the other day. my goal now is pretty much to be peter steele at all times, but its gonna take a while. the chorus pedal is the first step, although i think getting the 11 inch dick is gonna take awhile, but ya never know.

No worries man. Yeah cool meeting you. Y'all definitely need to come back. That was a great venue for that show. I really enjoyed it. I left a couple songs into powertrip.(1hr drive home) I'm sure it was a rough day. All night drinking, flight, travel.
