Totally fair. And I will say that I would've been happy with them going back into the catalog for virtually any album, but HP has been in such heavy rotation that I was stoked to hear all that material so well rehearsed. Likewise, that's why I want to see them headline - more time to do stuff across the catalog. Doubt that will happen soon, since I'm assuming there will be some sort of Mutoid Man run/shows once Mutants drops.

On a related note, Nate Newton is a goddamn beast. So much energy, such great vocals live, and his bass tone was crushing. Wasn't close enough to see it clearly, but I think he was using a Quilter 802 and the cab was an old Mesa Road Ready 2x15. Sounded killer.

@xJasonSmithx - Above was what I could see from where I was in the front half of the main floor. There's a part of the opening track (New Reality) on Heavy Pendulum where you can hear him doing a bass slide in the intro when the guitars stop for a sec. Super thick, chunky, fairly tight lows, and grindy high-mids/treble that isn't abrasive. He's getting a really convincing version of that tone live. It's thick and has tons of clarity with that chunky buzz-saw sound, but it's not boomy or washed out or grating. Seems to be avoiding all the pitfalls associated with dialing that in.

Barely played in months - so yesterday I played so much I've got a giant blister on my right middle finger... Feels like success and a good reason to work on my pick technique!

Random rant - I hate when you get two identical pedals, set them up the same for different rigs, then can't replicate the same tone on rig #2. 100% a first-world problem, but driving me crazy. Hope all is well for everyone here, back to destroying my fingers/working on picking!

Only slightly. I had my spat of medical issues earlier this year. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to pay them. Literally. Why does it have to be so complicated for me to just give people money for services rendered? One group says I've paid, another says I haven't (but the check's cleared...) - all sorts of madness here. I just want to pay and be done with it!

My day job is insurance. 17+ years. Any experience dealing with medical provider billing departments will make it clear why medical costs are astronomical. They do such a great job not collecting, not figuring out who to collect from, and not properly accounting what has been paid so instead everybody pays more and they hope some money from somewhere arrives in their coffers.

Random thoughts - I should have more time in the next few months, so bass will be more of a priority, as will other things I've had to put off lately. What are the hive mind's thoughts on these topics? No real answers necessary, just more of an attempt to gather info and find new strategies.

Pedal Hoarding - It's a long-term goal of mine this year to lessen the hoard. It's tough - most of my pedals do something different or have some personal value to me. At the same time, many are not being used. But I don't need the money if I were to sell. And while I haven't sold much, I have bought a few more pedals. Just not as many as usual! And the new ones are almost all being used or serve a purpose that none of my other pedals do...

In-Bass Pre-amps - It's also been a long-term goal of mine to upgrade another of my bass's pre-amps. I LOVE the Bart NTMB in my main player, but do I want the same pre-amp in my 2nd favorite bass as well? I like to think I want different tones, but the truth is I don't ever play with anyone else, and I love my current tone. Also, I can get plenty of tones from adjusting the pre-amp, and the quality of the new one is undoubtedly superior to the stock one. Much more clarity all around and a better "snap" to the highs. Also, the basses are different models with different pickups etc., so they won't be identical no matter what. Nothing wrong with the stock one, just not as good. So do I upgrade (with the exact same pre-amp or not?), or just leave well enough alone? The money from selling pedals in the first question was to fund the pre-amp, if that matters.

Other Instruments/Pursuits - This one is more a general life question. What are your philosophies when it comes to hobbies? I fluctuate between wanting ALL the hobbies because I genuinely enjoy all sorts of things to then being stressed because I've got so many things to do but no time to do them. I've been trying to read and watch movies that I currently own, and have owned some of them for years without enjoying yet. In that vein, I also play guitar - though am certainly a better bass player. Should I get rid of that gear to focus more on the bass stuff when I can? I KNOW that when I finish some books and movies, I'll likely get rid of the ones I don't see myself re-visiting. I love all of my stuff, and see the value in it, but am also trying to balance everything out and be productive, as well as keep my house from overflowing with stuff.

Sorry for the long philosophical post. Just a lot on my mind lately, and I finally have a bit of time to think it through! I don't really expect big answers or anything, just thought maybe I could generate some discussion and see what you fine folks have to say about these things.

On the subject of "other pursuits" - I have what is probably a similar situation, in that I have always had too many interests. So no matter what I do, some things will lie around untouched for years, sometimes decades. And then at any moment I may return to them. (For instance, this week I returned to the Rubik's Cube after forty years.) The only thing that has helped me make this less of a problem is acceptance. As in: okay, this is how it is with me, there will always be so many things I'm into that some of them will always be in wait. So be it.

If you don't need the money or the space, don't sell anything. I don't have the space but would kill to get a LOT of the things I have moved along over the years. These days, if there is something I find I like in a piece of gear that isn't redundant, it's staying. But, I hoard. I am a hoarder. Of more than just music gear. And of nothing my wife wants.

That's definitely part of the conundrum. Some of these things are things I HAVE bought twice because I like them. That much is clear. I'm just not using them currently, and haven't for a bit. But they're each great at what they do!

As I age, I'm trying to limit the in-bound stuff, and accelerate the out-bounding of stuff. That is just me, however. I find one or two items that can cover the area I want, and stop there. As a bass player, I'm not a real tone-hound, so I don't have the need or urge to really get into a lot of pedals. As long as it sounds like a bass, I'm usually good. Other people love them some variety, which I say is wonderful for them. This approach is applied to my other hobbies, golf and guitar. I have 2 sets of golf clubs, and am getting ready to sell the older one, and some random clubs I'll list as well. For guitar, I have 2, and am pondering a sale of one or both. I have one small guitar amp, and some other sundry pedals/parts in a small tub.

I find letting things go to be painful at the time, since I'm a natural hoarder as well, but the pain goes away pretty quickly.

I'm in my late 30s (so...not young & not old?) but I also try to adhere to this. The toughest things for me are perceived sentimental items & bass gear. I'm not an amp hoarder, and I have just 3 very different basses - none of which are terribly expensive. The pedals are my ongoing dragon that requires slaying. I can convince myself I may need any pedal for something in the future, and I'll fluctuate between having 40-50 and bringing it down to maybe 20. Ultimately, I am a creature of habit. I dial in a board and try to stick with it. So I'm trying to let a lot of stuff go. Agreed that you may feel a tinge of regret at first, but there's a lesson in how quickly that goes away and you forget about it. It's just stuff...
