Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'll also add we found our drummer on Vampr, which is like Tinder for bands lol. We found a few drummers, some ghosted, a couple we jammed with and one worked out. All in all I'd say it was marginally better than finding people to jam with on craigslist

Sounds like my typical Tinder experience, a couple ghost me, a few come over to jam, but at the end of the night only one works out

This is a philosophical post. I have a milestone approaching. About thirty-six hours from now, my first bass gig.

I clearly remember my first gig, forty-five years ago. I had just turned ten. I played violin in Handel's Water Music.
Innumerable gigs followed. On viola, on piano, on church organ, harpsichord. On chromatic harmonica. Temple Blocks. Singing in a choir. Conducting a choir. Conducting a symphonic orchestra playing my own music. Conducting 1000-year-old Gregorian Chant.

And after all that, having long ago given up on going pro, finding my true instrument. Electric bass. Teaching myself. Finding a fitting band. And now here's our first gig. Thursday afternoon, the king's birthday, a day of celebration. Outdoor stages with bands all over the city centre. Looks to be excellent weather, so it'll be busy.

And yes, I will be a beginner all over again. Make stupid mistakes. Like forgetting to sing backing vocals. (Oh, it's also my first ever gig with a microphone. Duh.)
But the band, the band is a good one. We're four very different guys, but we've learnt to trust each other. We fit together. We've worked together for a year and a half, to get where we are now. I'm in a good place, and I'm going to have fun! Well, thanks for reading, if you've made it this far. Writing it all down helps me control my nerves. Wish me luck.

Setlist:
1. Zappa - Muffin Man
2. Stooges - I wanna be your dog
3. Red Fang - Wires
4. Witchcraft - Deconstruction
5. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
6. All them Witches - When God comes back
7. Melvins - Revolve
8. Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - I'll cut you down
9. Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
10. The Sword - Freya
11. Sleep - Dragonaut

Awesome setlist. Muffin man dooms.

That break down def reminds me of some heavier stoner stuff I have heard. This is def more punk/shred influenced obviously but I like it! Thanks for the share!

Shredding and progressive riffs/song structure is definitely something they all excel at. If you aren't familiar with them, the guitarist/lead vocalist is Stephen Brodsky (Cave In), Ben Koller on Drums (Converge), and Jeff Matz (High on Fire) playing bass.

This is the first album they've put out since Jeff Matz joined around 2021, but their previous albums/EPs are all worth checking out if you like what you hear in the vid.

I thought Nick Cageo or whatever, that guy from NY played bass. Also not sure how those guys especially Stephen find time for all the stuff they do. Cave In are touring this summer, new MM video, so many side projects. What even is any of their main bands now?

It was Nick, but he bowed out a few years ago. That’s when Matz joined for some shows and they started talking about a new album, I think.

And I agree - crazy how prolific Brodsky is. In the last 3 years he’s been active with Cave In, Mutoid Man, Old Man Gloom, and Bloodmoon.

I know I don't read or post here often currently, but TB sends me mails about unread posts periodically. Which is great because it reminds me to check in and tell y'all how wonderful you are <3

In musical news, Boris blew me away last week. Don't think I've ever actually heard a Model T in person before. It was truly amazing.
Same with Bongzilla and Matamps. I don't usually buy tube amp hype, but damn do Matamps rule: fuzzy, heavy, but still with heft, precision and clarity.

The new Cave In record is pretty great. There is so much cross pollination between him and Nate Newton it is pretty funny. There is definitely a group of those guys who all seem to do something different each time they start something new but still play with a revolving group of friends. Cave In is doing what seems to be a somewhat lengthy tour soon.

Also, got a question for y'all. What is a artist/band you've had a hard time getting into because of their monstrous discography? Any tips?

I have a hard time diving into Melvins. And Boris too. I can find some things I like but my completionist tendencies take over meaning I want to hear everything by them, but then get burned out and just stop listening to them for a long while...

Yeah, agreed on Heavy Pendulum. A nearly perfect record, in my opinion. I like all of the Cave In stuff a lot, especially Jupiter, PPB, and White Silence. That said, Heavy Pendulum seems the most realized in terms of overall concept and flow. It's just insanely good from a songwriting perspective. Really like what Nate Newton brings to the table, and I dig the hell out of his other projects. If you haven't listened to the Doomriders records, check em out.

Really glad to see Cave In doing part of the upcoming Yob tour. Huge fan of Yob, and have seen them a bunch. So I'm especially looking forward to seeing them in Denver this weekend.

Yeah, agreed. I'm a big Doomriders fan. My favorite band of Nate's goes back a bit. I love Jesuit. I actually own one of Jebb Riley's amps. He sold me one of his v4B's. My favorite band of Jebb's was one of his early one's as well. If you haven't heard There Were Wires. It's worth checking out.
