Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Epic set from YOB last night, although Travis was not behind the kit (not sure who the new guy was). Aaron had some amp issues, but his bass tone was absolutely gargantuan.

They played a couple old tracks that I've never heard them do live before. Setlist was:

Ball of Molten Lead
Nothing to Win
Pain of I
Catharsis
Adrift in the Ocean
Quantum Mystic

And I agree - crazy how prolific Brodsky is. In the last 3 years he’s been active with Cave In, Mutoid Man, Old Man Gloom, and Bloodmoon.

And he was touring with Quicksand when they came to Houston with Clutch and Helmet.

Turns out Travis and Yob parted ways… that’s a bummer, I loved his playing. It was literally perfect for the music. How’s the new guy?

Gig schedule is cranking… a better-known-than-us stoner(ish) band hit us up on the band Insta asking if we wanted to do some shows with them. Um, yes please… and our show next week was supposed to be upstairs of a two-story venue but for whatever reason we got moved downstairs to the (much) bigger room. Opening for Brat and Maul… should be a banger!

Yeah Travis is a tough drummer to replace. His style is sparse, but compliments the riffs perfectly. The new guy wasn't as tight with the band, and I felt like he kept rushing the tempo, but that'll probably come with experience.

I feel like Yob’s stuff would be pretty daunting for a drummer to learn and especially really get the feel of. Mike’s writing is really its own thing which is what makes it so incredible.

I have a hard time diving into Melvins. And Boris too. I can find some things I like but my completionist tendencies take over meaning I want to hear everything by them, but then get burned out and just stop listening to them for a long while...

I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the Melvins' discography and moving forward from there (actually, I'd recommend this for most bands). The Melvins' first five albums, Gluey Porch Treatments, Ozma, Bullhead, Lysol, Houdini, are the best in my opinion for what it's worth. After that I feel that they became more of a brand than a band, kinda like Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, Chrome, etc.

Oh, and don't even bother listening to Snivlem Prick!

Made it through two days of the Milwaukee Metal Fest. One of the most insane lineups I've ever seen. First time in my life I had to choose between three bands I wanted to see at the same time.

Best set of the weekend : Napalm Death, closely followed by Imperial Triumphant.

Biggest surprises: Allegaeon and Impaler.

Slightly disappointing: Goatwhore and Swollen Teeth, Black Dahlia Murder (sound issue that drove me out of the crowd)

Rounded out by plenty of other awesome sets from Jungle Rot, Misery Index, Macabre, Blood Incantation, Corrosion of Conformity and Obituary.

Will gladly go again next year.

Allegaeon is PHENOMENAL. I'd love to see them live, but nobody ever comes around here these days.

I did this last night! First gig in 4 years, it went really good, and it was almost sold out. The Warwick and the Pharaoh sounded monstrous together.

Curious if anyone from Denver was at the Yob show on Sunday?

I was near the bar for Dreadnought, and the sound was solid. I was closer up for Cave In, and it sounded good considering I was getting a mix of PA and stage volume.

Was near the board for Yob, and Mike's guitar sounded really off. I've seen them probably 7-8 times prior and know their catalog well. So I'm familiar with how they/he usually sound live, and what parts of songs are meant to be clean vs distorted vs wall of fuzz. On Sunday, there was a super weird sounding 'distortion' on top of his guitar tone. This was not a heavy, over-the-top fuzz - more like a rattling/farty blown speaker sound. I was sure when they started the set that either a PA speaker blew or the cab he had mic'ed had a blown speaker. So I was waiting for someone on the stage crew or FOH to fix it between songs. I even moved around the room to see if it was somehow just my position in the room, but it sounded bad everywhere. Just kept hoping they would hear/fix it, but I left probably 40 minutes into the set since it seemed to go unnoticed and was distracting the hell out of me. Very bizarre...

Yeah. Luckily I've seen them enough that it wasn't soul crushing to leave early for one show. Just very weird, and I was looking around like "is nobody else hearing how bad that sounds??"

That said, the Cave In set was all tunes from Heavy Pendulum except for their cover of "Cave In". It's probably a combo of the anticipation, the fact that I'm in love with that album, and how badass they are live, but that set was worth the price of admission alone. Just slayed, sounded great, executed well, and the energy was top notch. I wish they would do a headline tour, because that 55-60 minutes was not enough...

I was shocked that they weren't doing a headlining tour with the new album and it being their Relapse debut. I think they only time I haven't seen them headlining was Krazy Fest '99 or something. Whenever Jupiter came out. Also, I would be kind of disappointed to only hear the new tunes. I really do dig them, but Until Your Heart Stops is all time top five for me, and possibly top three.

I went to Krazy Fest '01. That was such a great time.

How was the bass tone? I saw that he is using one of the Nunez Tertra-Fet pedals for dirt now.
