Yeah, I have a Whataphaser and it is hands down my favorite phaser I've ever played. There are a few more pedals I've been eyeing but I'm up to my ears in dirt already. And that was before the No Moon.

I have a No Moon and I love it. The Tube Screamer isn't awesome on bass by itself, but it mixes nicely with the other two.
I just ordered myself an Idiotbox Blower Deluxe, demos sound awesome. The guy who mixed my bands album reamped bass with a Rat and blended that with a clean signal and it sounds awesome, hoping to recreate the sound with the blower box!
Just ordered myself a CMC Effects Sunn Beta Preamp Clone super pumped!
Don't have much to add, been busy as hell lately. Thanks @kleinenenten for the breakdown. Great chronicle and documentation! Its always good to read through this. Really helps express the nuance to acheive refinement. Also how much our minds and such shift on whats good too.
I guess I do have one update, been working on cleaning up and rearranging my board. Making good progress, but I got a bit to go.
Now I just gotta list a bunch of my pedals I'm thinking of moving.

I noticed a few weeks ago that CMC Effects changes the available inventory at random throughout the week so I try to check it every day and I saw this for sale and bought it and I think it may have been the only one. It has an internal switch to change between Beta Lead and Beta Bass voicing. Really excited to try it! I used to have a Sunn Beta Bass and ended up selling it because I needed more volume at the time and always wanted a pedal that could get those sounds. I bought a Crimson Drive & Fuzz Factory from CMC too and they sound great!
Bass equipped with a reverse orientation EMG Geezer Butler P pickup -> An EHX English Muff'n with 2 12AX7 tubes, Gain @ 9 o'clock, High @ 10, Mid @11, Low @10 -> Tech21/Joyo Oxford with drive just above 12 o'clock, Low boosted, High Cut, Mid and Chraracter/Voice adjusted to taste, mixed in parallel with about equal amounts of "clean" signal (English Muff'n ovedrive) via a Boss LS-2 or similar effects loop signal blender -> Nux Tape Core Deluxe/Boss RE-2, or other great Roland Re-201 Space Echo tape delay emulator (or the real thing for that matter), with a subtle reverb engaged/dialed in, and relatively short delay time with relatively few repeats and low in the mix -> amp of your choice

Huh. Must have missed that one. Thought I had "subscribed" (or whatever they call it on Reverb) to his shop. Ditto for the Rat clone, though I'm 100% happy with my Rats at the moment. His stock changes consistently - it's generally a "pre-order" model where he has a few slots up at a time and then builds them as they fill up. The SS/BS Mini Clone he has is always going in and out of stock, and I get notifications on that one. Anyway - the important question - how's it sound? I've never played a Sunn Beta, and don't really know famous players or the tone in general (at least, I don't consciously know it), but I DO know it's a legendary amp, so it's got to do something right.
Yeah that's what I thought but I did notice he will periodically have 1 item that's only on for a few hours and it does seem to cycle frequently. I just got it today so I'm going to try it our a bit later. I used to have a Sunn Beta Bass and it's a very unique distortion character. You've heard them before the Beta Bass/Lead are played by Red Fang, the Buzz Osborne & Joe Preston from the Melvins, Adam Jones used one in the studio on Lateralus, Bleach-era Nirvana.
Yep, was gonna say the same about red Fang and Kelvin's. Didn't know about the Bleach though. Cool, I'll have to check it out.

For me, as much as I'd love to have a wall of amps, I'd rather have a bunch of pedal/DI versions of them. Less space consumed be em and I can utilize them like a preamp with another amp if desired.

Oddly enough, I really don't know any of those examples! I've heard a few tracks here and there, but couldn't tell you a single feature of their bass tones besides that they're distorted. Nirvana never really did anything for me, so I really only know their big hits and don't really pay much attention. Of those listed, I enjoy the Melvins when they pop up on playlists, but again, never seriously listened to them. And the only Red Fang song I can think of off hand is Prehistoric Dog, which I do quite enjoy. Guess I need to start listening to more stuff again and broaden my horizons!
This is my exact reasoning for getting amps that can do clean solid state tones, both for bass and guitar. I want a LOT of variety available when I want it, and don't want it taking up all the space amps would need. Especially since I'm a hobbyist and not making any money off of music.
Musically lately, I have been broadening my horizons with a few new bands, but nothing new or revolutionary. Mostly catching up on old classics. So my mix the last week as I prepped for work has been Flotsam and Jetsam, Saxon, Diamond Head, and Powerwolf (not an old classic). Not sure what took me so long to listen to most of this stuff as it's quality, but here we are.
I feel ya, same here and I really don't want to hoard stuff. At least not too much stuff volumetrically
I need to do the same, theres so many staples that I havent listened to, not to mention metric tons of great bands on bandcamp, or locally and such.
This thing sounded great in band practice! No low end loss, cut through really nice and sounded HEAVY. However… I went down a bass rat wormhole (thank you kleinenenten because the most informative posts were yours) and picked up an RCO Pepperbox/Volt Thrower clone that is arriving today to A/B with the Blower Box.

You're quite welcome! The BBD cuts like crazy - it very much reminded me of a B3K fused with a Rat. I did the same shootout months ago, and the Pepperbox/Volt Thrower won out for me, but both are absolutely wonderful pedals. Don't be afraid to mess with the internal trim pots on the Pepperbox, as those really tailor the sound. And be patient - it can take a while! A little tweak of those internals can go a long way. Enjoy the ride!
Do you know what the internal trim pots specifically do? I couldn’t find any info aside from nonspecifically modifying frequency response.
I never got a 100% straight answer myself, but my ears tell me it's some sort of frequency-dependent saturation control. There is a "low" (maybe labeled "bass"?) knob and an "other" knob (that seems to change both treble and mids?) They are somewhat counter-intuitive, as it seems to me that the further clockwise you turn the knobs, the cleaner those frequencies become. It can go from a basically clean preamp to absolutely nasty fuzz or distortion depending on those settings. If memory serves, I've currently got my lows around 10:30ish and the other around 8:30. But I've also found that he uses different internal trim pots on some of his builds (I have two Pepperboxes, each with different styles of internal knobs) and the second kind is a bit harder to dial in as it has less travel overall. It can get there, just requires more patience. My preferred settings are based on my "main" Pepperbox, so adjust as needed. I'll also note that if you plan on using this with more than a single amp, prepare to tweak for each. It's very different sounding on my 400RB-IV vs. my 700RB-II. And if you want to talk more Rats, hit me up! I'm always game for tone-chasing, especially if it involves more dirt pedals...
Ok interesting, thanks! I’m just going to have try it out and mess with it. I’ve got some time to tweak it before practice tomorrow and then going to bring both pedals. One thing I appreciated about the blower box is I hadn’t had any time to try it before practice but just switching it on with everything at noon it already sounded pretty usable. Sounds like the Pepperbox has some magic sauce but might need a bit of coaxing.
Yes, both can be pretty tweakable, but the BBD is certainly easier to tweak and can be used quicker. The Pepperbox rewards patience.
