Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

If moving any of those style cabs wasn't bad I'd be all over it. Kinda funny how either big 36-48" tall, 16" deep or small, light, and requiring more trips cabs are more appreciated now vs the wicked good sounds SWR, powerhouse, Eden, and such cabs are.
I get it though, deep cabs that aren't tiny and light are so much worse to move than and fridge and honestly, unless you're at a great FOH venue, you need the cabs at ear level to hear with a loud stage volume. Shame, but does open up studio, home studio, practice space cabs to some awesome, low cost options now.
I’ve been using a SWR 810 for a long time and even though it’s 150 lbs it’s pretty easy to move because it’s got sliders and handles everywhere. The fact I’d have to basically deadlift these two massive cabs to get them in my car and on stage might be a dealbreaker with the Big Ben/Goliath. But it’ll be fun to hear that 18” speaker going!
Yep, I went from an ampeg 810, to a Goliath 410, then a 610hlf, to a powerhouse 212. Downsized to a pf210, got another 610hlf, now a V4 412.
Oddly, I've realized that the powerhouse 212 and 412 have the punch I want with the deepness too, but the slam of a sealed cab is just unbeatable to me. that and those 2 cabs are such a pain to move at 19in deep... 810, or 412 sealed just does it. Enough lows but just like a punch to the chest. Sure it may not be super low, but you feel it, and for me those lows just got lost in the mix because of the kick at shows.
I've used a ton of cabs, kinda surprised those are the only ones I've owned. Peavey 215's with black widows are great, but can get boomy in smaller rooms. Lately too, with using sub octaves, I've noticed that with the way I play, it really pushes ported cabs to the limit. I don't notice the beginnings of farting out on sealed cabs.
Meh, too many generalities thrown out by me haha! Each and every cab sounds and acts differently.
Nice! I see the Krank in there too. That the studio's? I swear the only places I really see those is in studios, no idea why either.

Spent the day comparing fuzzes (again). The CMCs are really pretty amazing. Went through the Swollen Pickle, Pharaoh Supreme, Supercollider '71, and CMC Tall Font, Bubble Font, and Civil War. Started on guitar, then of course it had to continue to bass. I think I'll have to try and track down a Russian iteration of the Pharaoh, as I'm really digging those right now, and the Pharaoh circuit is a long time favorite as well. Can't imagine those two being fused together being a bad thing.
Big findings:
The Pharaoh Supreme is currently off of my boards - both bass and guitar. It has been replaced by the CMC Bubble Font for both applications. It's got the right amount of (mostly) smooth bass, aggression, and cut. (Guess this means I'll have to buy another CMC Bubble Font so I have one for each rig... Darn!) The settings for the Bubble Font are slightly different for guitar and bass, but mostly the same. Basically, diodes on SIL for guitar and LED for bass, adjust volume as necessary. Tone about 1:00, Shape/Mids maxed, and Sustain noon. The LED settings are more aggressive and open for bass, but sound very similar to my FatMetal on guitar, so the SIL gets used for smoother and fuzzier guitar tones. I got very similar tones with the Pharaoh Supreme on LED diodes, with plenty of fuzz and pre dialed in, tone about 1:00, and hi maxed, but it didn't have the roundness in the lows. Still, that pedal never disappoints and is going nowhere.
My #2 fuzzes are now currently also CMCs, the CMC Tall Font replacing the Swollen Pickle on bass and keeping the CMC Civil War on guitar. Oddly, I find them to work better on the smaller rigs than I do the larger rigs. My running theory is that the smaller rigs each handle bass differently than the big rigs, even though they're all basically different versions of the same amps. For guitar, this is the Peavey Bandit with matching extension cabinet and Transtube Supreme with matching 412, and the GK 400RB-IV and 700RB-II each with a Neo 410 on bass. For guitar, I think the Tall Font and Bubble Font have too much bass and it starts to sound squishy and indistinct. The Civil War is a great, mostly even-toned and aggressive fuzz. Works perfectly on guitar with my small rig. For bass, the 400RB-IV can't quite naturally reproduce lows like the 700RB-II, so it gets a little boost in the low end from the Tall Font. Settings are the same as described above.
Basically, the CMCs all have the same settings minus diodes, but the natural variances in the Muff versions make up for what I need on each rig. It's beautifully simple.
So now, each of my 4 rigs will be using a CMC Muff.

Been quiet here lately. Not much bass related info this week, but I swapped out my beloved Pork Loin for a Dunwich ODB clone today. We'll see how long it lasts. The ODB is certainly a bit brighter, and it retains bass etc. quite well, but I'm not sure I like it any more than the Pork Loin. Even though the tones are nearly identical solo, the clone seems to be much harsher when used as a boost for my other dirts. Anyway, other than that, I've barely been able to play my bass much the past few weeks. Spent some time comparing my various CMC Muffs, but no surprises to report there. I think I've settled on those pedals' settings, but nothing major changed. Hope all is well with everyone, and keep on dooming.

Heheh, the only thing I have to report is my stoner/metal band isn't on hiatus, but we had to cancel the one show we have booked, and we can't really book any others due to work issues, etc.. But we do have a EP recorded and ready to go...ugh.
So, three of us decided to do an ambient/space rock thing just to have something to play shows for, and had our first meeting today. It worked out well, and we improved for a few hours. If we had the courage to improvise that way in front of an audience, we'd probably already be booking shows. It sounded good and was thoroughly enjoyable. Hopefully we repeat the experience and are able to continue.

OBSOLETE MEATS continues to work on the jams, the next one's gonna be special. I recently got this f'n SYNSONICS headless bass which is short scale (yes they actually made one) and is a total nightmare, but seeing how I like to make okay-ish stuff out of trash, I'm planning to transplant the neck onto an old Peavey body and then play some Power Station or whatever. Work & kids eat up all the leftover bandwidth.
The new TB forum software kinda sucks but it's still a resource for me when I turn trash into semi-mediocrity.

Not quite jamming, but lately I've been cycling with a guy I used to jam with years ago... He apparently doesn't really play anymore, which is unfortunate.
I am still working on riffs and song for a solo stoner/doom rock project with my bass (tuned in tenor bass, A# standard, tuning) as the primary instrument, predominant supposed to be driven by bass, drums and vocals.
And it isn't strictly traditional stoner/doom rock, quite a few progressive/math rock elements, and some blackgaze as well, spiced up with some folky instrumental tracks.
But really need to get to setting up my old computer, where all my music production software is installed on, so I can start actually recording, and fleshing out the tracks.
I already have the bass parts and form ready to over a handful of songs, and even more riffs waiting to become songs, the plan is a full length release, and I think I ought to have enough material already, so really mostly a matter of me getting the finger out of my butt and setting up my old computer.

Hey everybody! Been awhile since I've posted anything. Got some new gear incoming - a nano POG and a Green Russian reissue Big Muff (I'm such an Ehx fanboy lol). I'll try to remember to give a lowdown when I get them.
Decided that my current fuzz's analog octave was too squirrelly (every live vid of my band I've heard I always think the tone is soo off from what I hear on stage). I have a RAT too so I'm gonna experiment with it and the POG and/or stacking with the Muff).
In other awesome news, my band gets to open for legends THE OBSESSED on 10/4 in Detroit which happens to be the day before my b-day AND Obsessed are playing "The Church Within" in full AND that is my fave Obsessed record. Yeehaw!

Nothing much going on here outside of buying 3 pedals: an EHX Germanium 4 Big Muff, a JRR Pedals Ram Triangle, and an AMT Ultima U2 IR cab sim/multi effect.
I have had the Germanium 4 before and used it in guitar context, but this thing works very well for bass. Still need to try the JRR and route up the AMT, as that one will get use for recording.
Also digging the new Huntsmen album a lot.
