Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah, the diminishing returns are another thing. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with the CabDryVR at all, and it ticks every box I want. The Mooer doesn't quite tick everything, and seems to be more expensive. I'll likely stick with trying to find another CabDryVR.

Those are pretty similar to my preferred settings on the EHX Reissue! I think I had gain slightly lower, but tone was usually 1:30-3:00 depending. And weirdly, I really like those knobs. Like a textured grip, but with a smooth face. Definitely different than the knobs that were on mine.

Yeah, I feel ya. I imagine that having one of each wouldnt be a bad go, that way you have the ability to line up to the dryVR (maybe) but also have a bigger range, but I really have no idea on the comparison between them. If the DryVR is much cheaper, that may be the route I'd go as well if it didn't expand the palette capabilities.

Stuck over on lunch break to the practice space. It's a pretty potent combo. Gonna have to get a little loop pedal (Saturnworks or the like) so I can turn both on/off at the same time. The POG clean isn't my vibe. It adds a lot of mids/harmonic content to the Muff as hoped. And ran into the Muff as opposed to after keeps it sounding more natural to my ears. Man, I missed having a Muff. Still the king!
Nice! And yeah, although I love most any fuzzes muffs just get what I want every time without any fussing.

Hate to do this to ya, but Keeley just released something wild that really opens up performance tweaking. Seems like a muff circuit too.

I’ve got a terrible idea and I’m going to see how it plays out haha. Just got a couple candelabra online (death doom band, fog and candelabra are pretty much required)... BUT to make things weird I also got a couple contact mics of Amazon and I’m gonna hook one up to a candelabra, maybe also put some chimey chains on it and some reverb in the signal. The idea being while my guitarists have to take their seemingly eternal tuning breaks between every other song I can whack the thing and make creepy noise. Idea inspired by Dan Rathburn from Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and his array of weird contact mic’d things.

I somehow stopped getting notifications from this thread. I think it must have been with the site revamp.

I gotta read the latest page, been slammed this week. Wanted to get this up here for everyone to enjoy: I did get to swap in a pair of bass speakers to the Ampeg, it sounds so damn good and was cheap and easy to seal the other openings.

That'll be a awesome night! Great place to play too. I gotta check my schedule and make myself free for that!
What kind of speakers did you use?

I think the same happened to me with the revamp for some threads.

I was wanting to try the celestion pulse 12's as I liked the range into the highs without losing much on the lowers vs comparable eminence speakers. I lucked out and a pair of essentially unused ones came up on reverb/Craigslist within an hour of me for $100 for the pair. I'm really impressed with them, though I don't have experience with any aftermarket speakers.

And for the "pics or it didn't happen" crowd:

Dude, I'm stoked if that's the previous mystery. I should get it in a few days.
Aww, I used to be one of the last to get them, so I assumed that I wouldn't be spoiling the surprise. Yep, it's the 2024 Mystery Effect. I hope I don't get moved to the naughty list for leaking it. :)
Best instruction sheet ever.
Hehe, in the old days, everything would be marked with "????" right on the pedal. No instruction sheet necessary. 🧙‍♂️

So…what exactly does it do? Bitcrusher/Ring Mod-ish? There’s no video that I could find; I used to have a yellow original era Deathray.

Man, I wish I understood exactly what it does. It seems to have a nasty adjustable filter with a bunch of resonance, and there's almost certainly bitcrushing going on. But there doesn't seem to be any of the original signal going through its output. It either tracks your note or it doesn't.

I've got a MARS ATTACKS! graphic DeathRay, this thing's tracking is a lot more glitch-y than it is.

No worries on the post, it actually got me more excited! Mine showed up the next day and I immediately took it down and plugged in once we put the kids down (it was an oddly late delivery).

I've only used it with my ss stingray, tracking is very dependent on play and where on the fb, above 12 is tons better.

The gargl seems to be the amount of glitch. You turn it 100% ccw and it seems to have way better stability and tracking.

Without having to have spent too much time on it, it seems like it may be a PLL type with a ring after and -2 to +1 oct. Or at the very least shows some sound qualities of one with the octaves, waveform sound, drop off record stop-esque pitch drop at decay ability. The freq seems like a filter for sure, but the more gargl is turned away it seems to overwhelm the synth and become a glitchy mess of ring pitch, wicked pitch tracking instability, and all out madness.

Eitherway, load of fun and I haven't even cracked it open to see the inside yet. Oh and boy is it load af!

Edit: I should have put in that I'm by no means even remotely knowledgeable on circuits, so all is just my best guess.

I've done very, very little with bass for the last few months but I'm getting the itch again.

Today I'm pondering picking up a couple Harley Benton P basses (probably the black ones, of course). One to keep EADG and one to string BEAD.

I found I can usually set a P Bass on my right leg when sitting and pick playing, but my Ibanez and Spector don't fit as well. Plus I just kinda want a simple passive bass with few knobs.

They're on tour and coming to Milwaukee. I'm stoked. Definitely a band I never thought I'd see.
Saw them at a festival last year, incredibly for the first time. It was a bit sad without Andy Gill, who had succumbed to Covid complications in 2020, but the new guy, David Pajo, had all the scrapes and clangs down perfectly. Sara was on it, although I’m still a big fan of Dave Allen’s work. This upcoming tour will be their last, and Gail Greenwood of Belly and L7 will be onboard for bass.
