Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Now that I'm playing in the 2 bass project with the gf we need to sort her equipment from the pre kid days.
At this point the music sounds like a doomy version of Ride the Lightening, but we're working on it.
I'm playing the clean fingerstyle bass which is a new L2000 through the mesa d180,
whereas she's pick playing the fuzzed (420 v2 ) out bass through her GMT300 (which is also glitchy).
The vintage old school purple active ESP has bad action and it's crackly and the magenta glitter
early active Daisy Rock plays ok, but we need to sort out why the bridge pickup doesn't work. I'm in
LA and I am not really feeling paying maybe 600 dollars to rescue both these old pj basses.
I offered to buy her a new fender american performer, but she was set on having the other basses fixed.
IME having newer stuff has been a game changer for me, no constant setups, no weird electronic issues,
and no bum tuners. Even my 94 G&L has a 2016 custom neck they made for me.

Where do you get a $600 repair job estimate from? Did you check with the Amp Shop on Lankershim for a quote? I haven’t been in there for years(as I now live out near Palm Springs), but there used to be this Australian(I think)woman who did killer work. Otherwise, check with Bob Dixon at Amphole and see who he recommends.
Better yet…learn how to your own set-ups, it’s not that difficult, and will save you money. Soldering/electronics modding has a learning/skill curve, but it’s not impossible.

i just spent 300 getting a fret level on. new bass and I don't want to expose the place i used for being pricey, i know how to do basic setups, i've worked for two music companies
been working full time teaching and then some doing freelance, dealing with this would require not dealing with other stuff
already had 2 basses that were basically never going to hold a setup, and it took the master luthier at work to finally tell me the truth after
spending a bunch of cash on setups, so maybe i'm not going into this with a positive attitude

Finally got a chance to go over to the practice room & hook up the new Lehle Splitter and Frost Giant Green Russian Big Muff.

Lehle: not much to say, a great passive splitter that solved my ground loop issues. A super solid purchase.

Frost Giant: It's a killer Green Russian. Compared to the EHX Reissue, it's of course very similar. If you are extremely picky about your Muffs, there's subtleties that give the Frost Giant the edge to my ears.

The Frost Giant is a little smoother in the top end, a bit less grainy than the EHX, and I noticed a bit more clarity - the octave from the POG seems to pop a little bit more. I chalk that up to the Frost Giant being hand built by a guy with a good ear and tight tolerances. EHX of course pop out a gazillion pedals.

The EHX will serve any casual Muff fan well. It does have more volume on tap than the Frost Giant. I have noticed in shootout videos that the reissue has the same edge over the OG Green Russians, so that was probably a design choice by EHX, and that makes the Frost Giant that much closer to a vintage example.

I also noticed that I preferred the Frost Giant ran a bit more open than the EHX, probably due to the edge in clarity. I ran it with higher gain where the EHX seemed to get a little washed out.

All in all, I'd say the Frost Giant was more than worth the price ($149-$169) and I like helping out small businesses run by passionate and knowledgeable people.

I don't know if Frost Giants Muff clones are a limited series that will end at some point - but he started with Triangles and is currently doing both Green Russians and Black Russians. So if you want a really particular version like the Civil War, or Black, etc I'd keep an eye out for one of his. Maybe he'll cycle thru them? No idea.

10/10, would fuzz again.

Got "I" down this morning - thankfully a relatively simple Geezer line. Now my son wants me to learn one of the new Sabaton songs. It seems incredibly simple, and the hard part may actually be remembering exactly what I'm doing in the current part of the song as many parts are incredibly similar. I'll probably learn it, then transcribe it to a different tuning just for fun.

Thankfully for my wallet, I'm pretty set on Muffs at the moment, and still very much dig my already-paid-for CMC Green Russian! Any idea how it compares to a Way Huge Russian Pickle? When I was going through Green Russians a while ago, that was my favorite straight clone of the circuit.

I'm going to do my best to keep up with my not buying pedals spree this next year, as I only bought 4 this year, and they were all long-time wants for great prices. And only one was for bass. Only a few pedals on my list, and I can keep waiting for deals.

Frost Giant makes great stuff. Their Bass Mountain is an excellent Rat, and currently one of my favorites.

Dang. I've debated picking up another one recently (or the EHX re-issue, but I much prefer top jacks), but am actively trying to NOT acquire gear, especially if I don't need it.

I have decided that I quite like the Throat Locust again. It was in limbo for quite some time, but I decided to give it another go against my Arion Metal Master. I set the mid frequency to 9:00, and it gives me enough of a low-mid focus to keep the thump, but plenty of grit and treble to still cut. Basically, a bit more hi-fi take on the HM-2 than the Metal Master. I run it at 18v (though the enclosure states 9v - I checked with the builder, I promise!) and the extra headroom is certainly helpful to retain clarity. Anyway, I'm rambling about pedals, and likely nobody cares! Keep on doomin', everyone!
