Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm all for phaser and flanger. Not that I get to use them often, but I enjoy them. I like the old DOD versions, but mostly because I got them cheap and they sound good to me. Can't say I'm an aficionado of any sort. I've also enjoyed the old Digitech Flanger and Phaser pedals, but I can't remember their names. The big heavy ones that came out in the early 2000s. They were a great series to get all sorts of different types of a single effect in one box.

Hehe, I love most of the phasers I've played through. I have only played through one flanger, the old purple Boss BF-3, which I still own. I dislike it. It ruined the idea of flanger for me, but I can't conscience moving it on.
The classics like the Phase 90 and the Phase 100 are pretty great. If you want to go with one of those, you'll get no argument from me. But here's my advice on the two phasers I love in my collection.
Univox PHZ-1:
Pros:
Sounds completely luscious
You can switch it between a slow mode and a variable mode with a footswitch
Has a video counter.
Cons:
Huge
Pricey
Requires its own 120V plug
Good luck finding a footswitch
The video counter doesn't really count anything
Here's a video of it being used on a record playback:
Bummers Eve's bass player seemed to use it on everything. I highly approve.
Idiotbox Effects Whatapahser:
Pros:
Sounds pretty great, if not quite as lush as the Univox
The controls are quite thorough for a phaser
Awesome Whataburger graphics
TWO indicator LEDs
Started as a mystery one-off pedal, but demand led him to make a second run, and eventually made it regular production.
Is priced exactly the same as the Boss BF-3 that I hate
It's made by a great guy who will basically fix it for free if something goes wrong with it (beer/shipping money encouraged)
Cons:
I can't find a demo or a song that I know it was used in. Maybe I'll fix that.

My wife surprised me with Rush tickets for my birthday. So, I have in the queue: Testament/Overkill/Destruction in March, Slomosa at a dinky club in May, and Rush in September.
I wish the Testament/Overkill/Destruction show was coming anywhere close to me. That would be amazing to see. I've seen all but Destruction, and they were great. As a big fan of German thrash, even though Destruction is my least favorite of the Teutonic "Big 4", it's a fantastic lineup overall. They're all legends.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone here used the EHX Mel9 (or other '9' pedals)? Ik Big Business has used one to cool effect and it has intrigued me for awhile even if I'm not sure how/where I'd use one
I've got the B9. It's kinda cool, but I've never used it in any of my bands. It's tracking's not awesome below C in standard tuning.
No, but I've always been curious with all of the varieties there are.
We’re playing a doom/sludge festival here and a few months after it was all booked out, they announced the Testament/Overkill/Destruction tour coming to town the same day. Gah!

Thanks to this thread, I'm going to see Agriculture open up for Model/Acrtriz (whom I still need to look up) in April, Failure/Baroness/Torche/...trail of dead the next weekend and Dark Lord Day two weeks after that with Napalm Death/Municipal Waste/Gatecreeper and.... DEADGUY. That last one has been a bucket list band since I was a teenager. However, since DLD is summing up all of the bands I would want to see at the MKE Metal Fest, I'm probably skipping it this year. The Rush tour is coming through when we're out for my wife's family vacation and after too many tours of seeing them whole, I don't know that my heart is into this one. Not throwing shade on anyone or anything, I just want to remember them how I remember them. And despite being a bass player, Neil was that band for me, Ayn Rand worship aside.
I'd like to catch Baaroness as well. I missed them in Cleveland on the last tour.
the guitarist I played with pre-pandemic is leaving his full time job, and we might actually be able to pick up where we left off
