Idk, I have them in my AVRI 62 P and they're real damn good at least for what I'm doing. But they don't sound anything like Dimarzio's



I have an offshoot of the dark stars in my Jazz bass from Daguet guitars in France. I really like them, especially for recording clean bass. They're very wide spectrum pickups, definitely not for everyone. And they're hot, waaaaaay louder than my P's pickup. The dagstar takes up far less space though.

Are there any basses that have similar pickup location on the body as a Ric 4003? Even if it is just the same neck pup placement. I know it's not going to sound exactly like a Ric but I love the neck pup in a Ric, such a sweet pickup spot to me.

I got a Ric neck pickup laying around. haha. And a dimarzio model one.
Rout something out and put it where the 24th fret would be. I think that's what my research led to.

I have been kicking around another build with Ric pups. That Waterstone Lord Kitchener Fackenbacker sounded killer but I just found it be so uncomfortable to play that I sold it, but I sure do miss how it sounded.

See for the price that he wanted for that rig, I would be putting something together that would kick that to the curb.

I think it's overpriced, too, especially given that it's just the half-stack version (full 2000S rig is, like the original SVT rig, TWO cabs, not one).

Well, a) I think we're looking for different things in a rig, and b) I could give a rats ass about Sunn's image, and it honestly bothers me when people think I only use them because they're trendy or whatever. I collect Sunns as well as use them as my main amps because I love them as amps. I understand other people might want more power out of amps or better speakers than the JBLs, but they're what I like for my sound, so please don't knock my preference for them as being just about their "image". Again, as I said, I wouldn't even consider it if he wasn't willing to knock $600 off of it, and even at that price it'd have to be a museum piece. If it had all original tubes with low hours, original JBLs, had been serviced, as was tip top cosmetically, I'd consider $1500 to be an alright price given the heads sell for about $1000 now a days. Now is it likely to happen that he'd drop $900 off his price? Doubt it, so I'm not in any real likelihood going to purchase his amp, but I don't think anything awful ever came from shooting a guy an email to ask some details about the equipment he's selling.

Sunns are good amps. I don't play a 2000S cab because I want the image. I play it because it sounds amazing and is loud as shag.

Like I said earlier, though, that is way overpriced for just one cab.

I guess my point is better illustrated by the fact that before Sunn became trendy, you could have picked up this kind of a rig for a LOT less. That isnt to say it isnt good, but in the market right now that price is inflated because of image. I am not saying that it is the image you are chasing after, but rather that if you are interested in the gear for what it does, you will still have to pay for that image. If you wont, someone else who is in it for the image, will. Sadly that drives up the price for those that want it for its sound.

For me, I am only looking at what the rig will do/sound like. None of my cabs are branded, and the majority of my amps say "peavey" on them, and they are not even the peaveys that have a cult following.

If I had direction to build a low powered tube amp S/D rig, and $2500 to spend, it would be one of those HD130's and two 215's loaded with 15PR400's. That is because I like how the amp sounds with those drivers, and I like how loud the drivers will get with that amount of power. That's just me though.

And yeah, Sunn does have a cult following now, but then, I kinda feel that part of it is just people rediscovering how good the old Sunns are.

And part of that is just due to tube amps being cool again. I know, among guitarists they didn't really stop being cool, but among bassists, they kinda did. And vintage stuff in general wasn't as popular in the late 80s and 90s (of course, it wasn't as vintage then, either).

i bought a sunn 2000s head for 200 bones at musician's bargain basement in akron ohio in 96, an amazing head that my parents refused to store when i finished college and moved to LA, as much as i loved this head i couldn't justify paying 2 grand now for another one and i went with the mesa d180, because i could live with 675 for the mesa with the skb case and mesa hollywood can fix it anytime and any part

I've probably asked you this before, but how do the two compare in sound? Since you've owned both.

Probably. I built my case for mine, though, because I was tired of carrying it by its rack handles and getting bitten by its corners.

Agreed. The Sunn trend has become a huge pain in my ass. My first 2000s I got for $800 with original tubes in pretty much NOS condition, but you used to be able to get them even cheaper. Discounting how cheap they used to be, I think around $1000 is a fair price for what they actually are, hand wired amps of such calibre, but I see ratty beat up ones trying to sell for way over that far too often. I'm only looking for nice condition ones, and the trendiness has only made it tougher and tougher to get ahold of them.

And honestly, I can build a high quality 2000s cab and load it with JBLs way cheaper and just pick up another nice 2000s. Or 1000s or 1500s (don't have those yet, gotta catch 'em all).

I'd also like to try those Faitals out at some point, some one said they're similar to the JBL 140s.

They've kinda run full circle, lol. I think I saw the original price for a 2000S system and did the inflation calculations, and in today's money it would be around $10,000, as I recall.

I think a grand is about a fair price for the amp part if it's in good condition. I think if anything they were undervalued when they were cheap.

"2000S" refers to both an amp and a cab from Sunn that were originally sold together. The early, tube rectified version of the amp was rated at 120 watts, the later solid state rectified version was rated at 150 watts... both measured at about 1% THD. The cab was enormous, about as wide as a guitar 4x12, and about as tall as an SVT's 8x10. The speakers used were JBL D-140s or K-140s, I can't remember which was actually stock. A "full system" was considered to be one amp and two cabs.

Noel Redding's rig at one point included three of the amps and six of the cabs.

D.M.N. plays a 2000S full rig, I just use one of the cabs (loaded with EV 15Bs) though. They are very loud.

It definitely does. On some instruments, it's fitting. On others, I find it really gaudy.

I like some instruments made from barnwood more than I could ever enjoy spalted/marbly tops.

If I had the skill I'd build a neckthrough bass with railroad tie wings for the body.

But in all seriousness, I'm not a fan of spalted tops either. And what I find really yucky are the excessively flamed/quilt tops on Gibson Les Pauls. A little flame I'm cool with, but I'm a way bigger fan of plain tops.
