I know next to nothing about car names. What is it you're suggesting?

Can't drive stick, so I'd have to learn and that seems important to know, but I'd like to know first.

No salt here so that's not an issue. I have mechanically inclined friends, I don't know anything really but I can hold a flashlight steady and learn!

I'm a poon and buy auto as well. But if I was to get an older japanese car or truck, I'd definitely go manual next time.

Those little 4 banger manuals are pretty easy to drive. Take a friend with you and buy one. Drive it around in a non traffic situations for a week or so, and you should be good. You might burn up the clutch in a few months, no biggie. Cheaper repair than a whole new/used auto tranny. Then the new clutch will last a long time.

They're super easy to learn to drive. You might, however want to get a model with a Tach for learning on. I learned in my truck and doesn't have a tach, so I learned to listen and feel for when I need to shift. Some people like that, others really like having a tach.

This is going to seem like a noob rant. But I was curious how many of us have the problem of the floating tone. My equipment never leaves my study, as I've quit playing with people and my back can't handle moving the cab any more. Almost on a daily basis, I'm finding I need to tweak my settings. Everything I'm running is solid state and effects driven. Basically running my fretless or my B301 (Guild) into my effects pedal (GNX2) to my amp and 4x10 cab. I'm running a few patches, but mostly one that I've set up that has an over driven amp sound and smooth distortion with heavy bottom end. There is a slight delay and chorusing going on and that's about it. Day by day, I find myself tweaking this or moving to different patches, then back to this one. It's like I'm chasing a tone that was awesome yesterday, but sucks today. Is this just my ears or is my rig changing on a daily basis? I thought solid state would be, well, solid. I was for a while trying to achieve Ron Now's tone, but realized I was about 3500 watts off.

I don't change my tones much since I've been using basically the same gear for a while.

Sometimes I'll mess with the poopy EQ knob on the reverb (why the shag does it have an EQ knob? It's a shaging reverb pedal, it doesn't need an EQ knob), or the decay time knob. Or I'll adjust the Big Muff's volume, or, less often, the tone or sustain knob.

Now that I've started using the Swollen Pickle as well for one spot in the new song, I tweak that a bit sometimes, specifically, the filter knob, the volume knob (I want it to be a little louder than my basic tone, because the part I use it in I want the band to sound like a brick wall slamming into the audience), and setting the sustain knob very close to minimal.

I think most of us want to sound like Bass. Just very angry Bass. With Turrets.

Not me.

My bass is intended, as I've stated before, not to sound like bass. It's supposed to sound like "obnoxious low-mids cannon."

1. Thanks, real happy with how the record came out. At home I play very quiet, I have neighbors, dogs, and a wife that I'm trying not to ignore. Very low volume good tone is a tricky thing. I'm still working on how to get it just right. If I figure it out, I'll be sure to let everyone know.




The more quiet I play, the more I feel the need to tweak things. At live volumes, a lot of things are set and forget.

I've noticed this, too. At shows, I'm generally not tweaking, except during parts of a song where I've decided on a different setting for something (the beginning of the "Servitude" segment has a bit more lows on the amp and a bit more overdrive).

Low volume, things always sound slightly off to me. Not obnoxious enough.

I can't, either. Makes me roll my eyes when some dudes act like it's some measure of manliness. But then, the whole societal construction of manliness makes me roll my eyes, too.

I don't give a poopie about challenging myself when I drive. That's not the goddamn point, for me. If I'm driving, I'm just trying to get myself and whatever I'm carrying from point A to point B. Around here, that usually involves a shagload of traffic and a bunch of hills. So I prefer an automatic.

To me learning manual transmission has less to do with some macho estimate and more to do with not being stuck anywhere.
I've driven all kinds of vehicles and can hop on just about anything and GTFO in a crisis.
Then again I've run away from allot of damnhurricanes.

Yeah, I don't deny that knowing how to drive manual is a useful skill if the only car available is stickshift.

But even if I was good at driving stick, I'd still prefer automatic, I think. Kinda like how I prefer bicycles with gears to fixies, because I don't need an extra challenge in transportation... to me the whole point of taking a vehicle somewhere as opposed to walking or taking public transit is that it's supposed to be easier.

Also, I don't have to outrun hurricanes.

First four gears an reverse, then you use the other stick to shift to higher gears (5,6,7,8, high reverse) and shift the first stick down back to first, which is now fifth. And the throttle is done by hand as well. And there's two break pedals. It's a lot to try and deal with.

This is the reason. I find manual much more engaging and enjoyable to drive. I feel much more in tune with the car. Trust me, I'm uber-manly no matter what I drive. (Strikes uber-manly Zap Brannigan pose.)

I drove a 1981 Datsun 810 auto for about a year. I didn't feel any less manly, just really bored. If it had been a manual I might have actually tried saving it after it got sideswiped and totaled.
